Joaquin Phoenix crushed it. He does all the horrible things but you still feel some empathy for him. It's crazy.
@JitteryJackanape
@JitteryJackanape 10 месяцев назад
That's cause his first kill was self defense and life kept kicking him down until that point. The one of the man running wasn't but I think people would say yeah that was within the realm of reason. Not justified but. "Yeah I could see myself snapping and killing that guy in a fit of manic rage and revenge." Most if not all his kills are meant to make you think if his feelings are justified not his actions. It's a brilliant script.
@johnblackrose
@johnblackrose 10 месяцев назад
@@JitteryJackanapeto be fair the guy running away was fair game. There are people who learn of a crime and go crazy a day later and kill someone randomly and get no jail time. Like the one father who learned his son was graped by his coach. Coach was sent to the afterlife. Father got no jail time because its considered a crime commited in a severe emotional state where you literally arent there so to speak. So arthur shooting the guy in the back. Justified. However there are some laws against standing over someone and unloading into them. Regardless. The point is it was in self defense. You could even argue his moms murder was an act of emotion too. Murray maybe not so much that was contemplated well in advance.

Because he was created out of abuse and evil, he wasn’t just born evil. His pos mom got with an abusive guy that gave little Arthur brain damage and caused all his issues. And then you can go a step farther and not even blame the mom because she clearly also had mental issues so you could blame the universe itself for being so cruel. In the end the Joker isn’t a product of chosen evil, but evil that was put upon him

@@Randomyoutubecommenter true. But the end scene with him in the ward again suggests the entire movie was in his head. Hes still the joker. But bruce being a little boy may not have been real. IE he created an entire storyline to how he created batman.

Just wanted to give guys some information about this movie and the Joker, this movie is NOT connected to any Batman movie that you've previously seen. The director Todd Phillips wanted to create his own origin story for Joker, the Joker doesnt actually have a true origin story in DC comics over the years the Joker has had different origins, what was correct was how Bruce Wayne parents were killed but they werent killed by some guy pretending to be the Joker from a group at some riot, based on the comics Bruce Wayne's parents were actually killed by a low level criminal named Joe Chill
@jessecortez9449
@jessecortez9449 10 месяцев назад
Did Todd Phillips want to create aan origin story? If I remember correctly, he set out to make a specific type of film bu couldn't get the backing he needed so he threw in some tidbits from comics since comic book movies were still booming. This movie is really about a man struggling with mental and emotional health issues while living in a toxic society that fosters those issues. Other than a few name drops from comics, the movie is heavily inspired by Taxi Driver and King of Comedy, hence Deniroe having the role he has here.

The condition that the joker has is called a Pseudobulbar affect (the laughing part). It's caused by severe trauma to the brain which he obviously sustained during his beatings with his mom. They're not generally dangerous, but due to his other trauma, it can push you over that edge. It's a lesson that we should at least try to be cordial to people even if you don't like them because you don't know what's going on in their life.

It just uses the name Joker to get eyes on it. Just like the few name drops of Waynesx Arkham Asylum, Crime Alley... If they didn't use the popularity of Batman, this movie would have been an under seen cult following movie like Requiem of a Dream. This movie is really inspired by Taxi Driver and King of Comedy. It's really about a guy struggling with mental and emotional health issues while living in a society that fosters those issues.

Taxi Driver and King of Comedy are the inspiration for this movie. The few name drops from comics are just to draw in a general audience that otherwise wouldn't have seen this movie. @Kamenari37 10 месяцев назад
Yes. Phoenix lost a lot of weight in order to play the role. Given that the Joker is often portrayed as a very lanky if not awkwardly postured individual, Phoenix is something of a method actor he takes his roles very seriously. That said, after the film he gained a lot of weight back and expressed regret over putting his body through it and decided he'd be less inclined to take on roles in the future that would put so much strain on his physical state. Batman's origin is always more or less the same, but there are subtle nuances each time the story gets retold. In some the Joker has been responsible for his parents deaths, in others, he's not even a factor. Joker's origin on the other hand has always been somewhat more cryptic and open to interpretation. Something that was played with by Nolan in The Dark Knight with the joker constantly telling the story about how he got his scars, but not giving the same story each time. In some iterations he's been a low level street thug who was always a bit crazy and finally broke into bigtime crime. In other's he has been an innocent bystander who met with an unfortunate accident that found him in a vat of chemicals that bleaches his skin and alters his brain, and in others he's been a gangster crime boss that just liked the aesthetic of the joker look. There are many continuities even within the comics and they all add their own little spins to things in order to keep ideas fresh. We're talkin' about characters that have been made, and remade several times over. Each time books are passed on to another author and artist to continue, they tend to want to leave their own signature upon the comic whether it is in the narrative style, the art, or the tone of the book. While there have been issues that go into some detail about the Joker's origins, this movie has been the first deep dive into the driving forces of the character. That said, it is not intended to be conflated with the greater DC universe as a tie in film. or any sort of prequel to a future Batman film. It is the Joker's story and his story alone as sort of an expose of the character. Of course all of this has given plenty of people a lot to talk about in terms of its place in canon, and the merits of the film being based on a comic character yet not being a comic book movie. Sometimes art is just art though, and that's life.

However...Jaoquin got so close to him, I literally felt the character, I felt like it was him but older, the body language, every performance Joaquin did is just a brilliant work. The way they portray mental instability, irrationality, and impulsivity is so so so good. It also does a good job showing how people can stand behind something that is so clearly bad yet justify it in their minds. As well as some very slight political notions about rich vs poor. The way that two psychos can be created by different circumstances. Arthur/Joker is a product of a mentally ill mother and a society that has judged and treated him a certain way due to his own condition and it crushed his soul and made him hate to the point where he was going to kill himself. Instead he turned his rage against the world and by doing so created another psycho in Bruce Wayne/Batman. Arthur's actions and obsession with the Wayne family lead to the deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne. Bruce (presumably) becomes Batman and uses his own hatred against those who remind him of the person who took his parents from him.

Your original post was an absolute statement (which means there can be no other outcome). In other words, someone born in a bad environment will always be a victim unable to change. I was pointing out that it has been proven over and over (in real life) that people who grew up in the worst of situations and with everything going against them have indeed overcome the product of their environment while many do not. We do not see this in the film because Arthur has no will to change be it through a personality trait, mental capacity or both. Most of the film (if not all of it--depending on your interpretation) is Arthur's sick fantasy where he always comes out on top. Why would he want to change? But hey! I remember watching this movie for my 1st out of 3 times in the cinema, when a family of mom, dad, older sister and younger brother sat on the row in front of me. In the first scene, where Arthur laughs out of pain and despair, the young boy (around 10 years old) whispered to his mom "I don´t think, that I wanna watch this movie". The family sat still for another 5-10 minutes and then left with a sad boy. This movie is not a superhero/supervillain movie. It´s a social study of men at the very rock bottom of society, who suffers in silence and experiences nothing but alienation from the world around them. I am so happy, that Hollywood had the courage to make this movie, because I think, it´s the most relevant and important movie of the last 20 years for the forgotten but suffering men of our Western World.

There's a meme out there about how Bruce Wayne (or his father) would do more for Gotham by giving their money away to the poor rather than be a vigilante - and this movie pretty much shows that. Imagine if Arthur got actual help, and if the rioters didn't also feel stepped on by the world, if Bruce's dad hadn't looked down on them all, etc. It could have prevented Joker from becoming Joker.

Phoenix kills this role. What I like about how he plays it is that everything he does is off. It's like he lives on a different wavelength compared to people around him, so they get freaked out by him. And because he tries to fit in, make jokes, friends, and be nice, but the world around him doesn't reciprocate because of how weirded out everyone is, so eventually he lashes out. It's a great Joker origin story.

I remember watching this in the theater and distinctly remember that when the movie ended and everyone was leaving there was silence. Nobody was talking, they were just stunned. Compare this movie to all of the rest of the stuff that is being put out these days. The fact that it got produced gives me hope that we might actually see dark, gritty, thoughtful films like this in the future. The way this movie was shot was absolutely gorgeous as well. Every scene was a piece of art. The ambiguity of so many things in the movie (what was real and what did Arthur imagine), the acting, the cinematography, everything. It is just so much to process. Loved it.

Fun fact. Or not so fun. Remember when joker's character says if it was him expiring in the street, you'd walk right over him? He had an older brother River Phoenix who died in the street. And I believe people did walk over him. River Phoenix was in Stand By Me if you want to see him act. I always wondered if he thought about his brother River when he was saying that line.

In comic terms, this was the absolute perfect portrayal of the "clown prince of crime" joker. There are three version. Clown prince is the second. The first was the joker type from batman 66'. The last was basically your true psychopath joker that heath ledger played perfectly. That version was like the first two twisted together.

The conversations Joker had with the young mom and her son, didn't happen. Joker imagined/hallucinated those interactions with her. That's why they showed flashbacks with him and her, then showed just him, by himself in reality. That's also why she was so scared when he was in her apartment, because she had no relationship or interactions with him since the beginning, on the elevator. Great reaction guys!

One of the details I love about this movie that a lot of people miss is how Arthur is constantly sustaining head injuries throughout the movie, no doubt exacerbating his mental illness. It's easy to overlook because audiences have become numb to violence and Arthur himself seems to stoically have little reaction to it so you almost forget that this poor guy is getting his brain scrambled multiple times a day. It's so much more painful to think about if you know the story of Chris Benoit.

I did not see this as both of u did. This to me, was a sad story. Everything Author thought he knew, people he thought he could trust, was all a lie. When the 3 men started to beat him up on the train, he snapped. What u were witnessing in the bathroom after the train was the first signs of Joker immerging. Then finding out about his mom, little by little, Author started to disappear, and Joker take over. That's why he didn't care anymore. He just did whatever he wanted to do on this day. He was going to do what he planned anyway. But when face to face with his idol, making fun of him, he changed his plan. So, that is why I find it sad.

I'm so glad you guys did this one! Comic books can be very dark. They are graphic stories- Just like any book but given in smaller bite sized pieces with lots of pictures to illustrate the story. Now Asia knows that a comic book movie can be high drama and not just laughs and I'm thrilled for the door this opens for you both! 😆 I think comic books became so popular with people at the time because back then many people didn't have a good education and may not necessarily be able to read well (or at all). Comics gave those people the same escapism that people who could read enjoyed.

@johnblackrose good point. The best thing about Joker as a villain is we can never truly know what he will do next. He is unpredictable and that's what makes him Batmans greatest villain. Well technically in the comics, Joker has the same ability as Deadpool. He is able to see through the fourth wall. He knows whatever medium he is in. Comics, video games, movies, etc. So I can't confirm this but given the scene flash to Bruce's parents while he is in the asylum, I assume by that point he has awakened that ability and knows that little Bruce will become batman because of him. And that the only people that will get the "joke" is the real life audience watching the movie. Again I can't confirm that as far as the movie goes but if so, it's awesome.

When they saw this one, they talked about it to me until I finally made up my mind to see it--they talked me into it. I can't say if it was the best Joker personification for me, but I found it a powerful film. Was so sad for Arthur, his plight really pulled me in and even when he became violent there was still a part of me that felt empathy for him. That's how good Joaquin Phoenix's acting was. 😢

@@Doxymeister I fully understand where you are coming from. I have to admit that I'm not too fond of larger-than-life figures in DC/Marvel movies. At some point it loses it's charm. What I liked about this Joker is the re-humanization of the anti-hero. The ambiguity and duality makes it far more interesting than your average bad guy causing mayhem. The superb acting and social commentary just adds to the movie's brilliance while the characterdevelopment is the main thing that carries the movie.
