the same thing happened in At Close Range between Sean Penn and Christopher Walken. they weren't getting the scene right so Sean went to the prop table and got the REAL gun and put it in Chris's face. now these days we've had too many accidents so that kind of thing could never happen, even back then it wasn't supposed to happen. but when you watch Walken's reaction in that scene it's real fear and the way it plays on screen is phenomenal. i think At Close Range is a fantastic movie, it's probably not something for reaction channels because of the slower pace and lack of action. but if you are into films, acting, etc it's one to watch.

This is a dam near perfect movie, everything pulled together seemlessly. Heath Ledger really knocked it out of the park with his performance and it will always be one of the greatest performances in the history of cinema.

Only thing thing that compared to me in theaters was Jackass 2 lol. Completely different vibe, but they were both equally hype in their own way. Never seen a new movie have such a response from people in the theater. I still see movies in theaters all the time. I was a young boy when this movie came out, and I wanted to see it so bad because Batman was my favorite comic book character. But everybody was saying that it isn't a movie for kids, it's too dark, so my mom wouldn't let me see it. Well my dad came to my room one night and said we had a trash bag of clothes to take to Goodwill. It was late, maybe 9 pm. He told my mom he wanted me to come so he would have some company. Well on the way to Goodwill, we stopped at the movie theater, he had gotten us two tickets to The Dark Knight for a 10 pm showing. I have probably watched this movie fifty times since then. One of the core memories of my childhood for sure.

I remember hearing about him locking himself up in a motel room for 30 days, keeping a diary to prepare himself for the role and was dumbfounded by his commitment to the craft. Christopher Nolan allowed Heath Ledger to film his own “Joker hostage video,” Nolan had enough trust in Ledger to produce something aligned with his vision of the Joker- chaotic, and wildly ruthless. Also, Ledger kept a diary of how he trained to get/stay in the Joker’s mindset- one of his things was a picture of a hyena, which was inspiration of the cackling laugh throughout the movie. Such a masterclass in acting, gone too soon 😢

"What doesn't kill you only makes you... stranger" (instead of stronger) "(S)laughter is the best medicine" (on the truck they use to intercept Dent's prison van) ......and my personal favourite, the vehicle on fire blocking the street that forces Dent's prison van onto the lower levels, ......is a fire truck. Cause it's a truck. On fire. I'm sitting in a pitch black theatre with everyone on the edge of their seats, and I burst out laughing *wipes her eyes* Oh Lord, I've got problems, I'm sorry. Thank you for reacting to this! When I first heard Heath had been cast as the Joker I laughed out loud and said "welp, someone's gonna be fired over this"...I've never been more wrong in my life and have never been happier about it lol To this day Heath's performance is my favorite interpretation and will not be replaced. I really liked Joaquin's interpretation and Hamill did great voice work, but Heaths covered all facets of the character for me and I'm forever in love lol 🥰😍 I honestly never paid any attention to HL before this movie but have learned to appreciate him over the years. Even my uncle, a comic book collector and one of the grumpiest, pickiest men on earth is a fan of Heath's interpretation and says it is the best. That's not an easy achievement lol. Also, for your boat theory, he would have had snipers waiting for people to jump off. Escape would not be an option. And as you can see he was going to blow up one, or probably both, of the boats either way. So even though they chose not to blow one another up, he was going to blow one or both of them up and say they did it to each other, hence the "gotta do everything yourself" line. He was gonna do it himself just to make everyone think the people chose to do it to further destroy everyones morale. Either way the Joker wasn't going to let people live and just walk away. Not his style lol. Also, dont let conspiracy theorists/poor researchers tell you that playing the role of the Joker killed him. IT DID NOT!!! Heath passed away while filming the movie after TDK and it was due to complications from pneumonia. There is a documentary on it and there are interviews with both Aaron Eckhart (Harvey Dent) and Michael Jai White (Gambol, mob member) about how Heath behaved during filming. He was the Joker while cameras were rolling and Heath when they were off. It's that simple. He enjoyed playing the role. He had fun with it. Yes he locked himself away for a month in a hotel room to develop the character and get into a mindset for him, but he came out just fine and didn't stay in character outside of filming, etc. He was a perfectly normal dude playing a character. That's it. On his next film he developed pneumonia which weakened his respiratory system, he was a heavy smoker which also weakened his respiratory system, he took some medication for his pneumonia which supressed his respiratory system to help reduce coughing, and then took some pain meds on top of the pneumonia meds which further supressed his respiratory system and he stopped breathing in his sleep. It's nothing more than that. That's how a lot of ODs from pain meds happen unfortunately, the supression of the respiratory system and then breathing stops completely. His masseuse found him when she arrived for their appt. At first she thought he was sleeping but then realized he wasn't breathing. Unfortunately if was already too late. It was a horrible mistake and it really is that simple, so please stay away from the drama queens, etc who say otherwise because it's just not true. He left behind a daughter, Matilda, with actress Michelle Williams. She's possibly named after the national anthem of Australia, his home country, Waltzing Matilda, but I'm not positive. Regardless, he was an amazing actor and he made a stupid mistake mixing his medications and it cost him his life. There's no conspiracy involved. Thank you for the reaction and for listening 🥲

Look im a Huge Heath fan and I think his Joker was one of the best performances in the history of film but let's not pretend he didn't have a serious drug problem...and this is coming from a former long time opiate addict (30mg percs otherwise known as roxy or oxycodone, which eventually led to heroin ), so not from a olavecif judgment AT ALL...not to mention coke, ghb, and basically every other hard drug you can think of...except meth (cuz as fucked as I was, I did care about my teeth) point is Heath was who he was so there's no need to sugarcoat it...I'm almost positive he had heroin(if not some type of opiate) and coke in his system when he passed...glossing over or just ignoring that does a disservice to many people...especially young fans who idolized him and probably romanticized that lifestyle....or just simply assume you've have to go that route to become an actor of that caliber...i agree that I don't think the Joker role was responsible for his death at all...in fact I don't believe Heath was trying to kill or even hurt himself... ...Heath had been in the depths of addiction for years at that point...I believe you mentioned blood thinner at some point in your comment and you were correct when you insinuated that may have played a role in his overdose as if you introduce a blood thinner into your system and then take your normal dose just like it was any other day other day it magnifies the effects(which a surprising amount of addicts aren't awarevif) of whatever you're putting in your system...Hell its not that hard to od just by grabbing a few grans of stuff that's stronger than your used to with no blood thinner or anything else in the equation...so, again, I agree way too much was made of this Joker role bringing him to some dark place that caused him to just not give a fuck so he was reckless and od'd...but at the same time let's not pretend this was some medication mixup when the reality is he was a serious addict who for whatever reason(too many options for what possibly went wrong that particular time he decided to use) got unlucky that day...and sadly didn't pull through it...this is the farthest thing from trying to tarnish a man's name after he's passed...as I said I thought Heath was amazing...its just an honest statement about addiction that does much more good in the long run than some sugar-coated version of what went down... R.I.P Brother You were a great talent but more importantly a fucking warrior...it takes one to recognize one.

37:50 - 38:00/ Fun fact: the whole mischarge where Joker looks confused about the bombing was an outtake! The pyrotechnics and explosives genuinely stopped for a few seconds. That wasn't supposed to happen. To Heath's loving credit, he knew this would be a one-take shot. That's why he pretends to check the detonator to give the explosive experts a few seconds to continue the demolition. That hospital was actually set to be torn down. So Nolan got permission from the city of Chicago to film the Dent scenes in there. Leading to the wide shot of the whole structure being destroyed!❤

One of the best parts of the movie is the explosion at the hospital, because some of it was improvised perfectly. When the explosion paused and the Joker started banging the remote and looking confused, that was all improvised by Heath Ledger. The truth is the explosion wasn't supposed to pause, but they had some temporary technical difficulties and Heath stayed in character. Turned out great and created a funny moment. Plus they were lucky, because they only had one shot at blowing up that hospital and thankfully the shot wasn't ruined.

This is simply not true. Both Christopher Nolan and the special effects supervisor Chris Corbould have debunked it many many times. They needed to have 2 rounds of explosions to ensure Ledger had enough time to make it a safe distance away from the building. Ledger messing with the detonator was the signal that he reached the safe zone and the crew could start the second round of explosives. Everything in that scene went exactly according to plan.

Little fun fact, Michael Caine had some lines during the fundraiser dinner but he was terrified of seeing Heath Ledger in full costume and the way he was acting that couldn't say his lines and by the end Christopher Nolan decided to just not use Michael in that scene. For an experienced actor to react like that, so afraid, that really meant Heath was spot on. Heath became the Joker and turned that role into a masterpiece, RIP Heath. Crazy thing tho, Bane made the Joker looked an amateur when it came to being the "bad guy". As perfect as The Joker was in this movie Bane was in the 3rd the ultimate villain

Every time I watch this one I'm impressed with all of the acting in the scene where the warden hands over the detonator to the prisoner played by Tom Lister. The extreme moral courage of Lister's character is inspiring, as are the performances of the warden and the security guard we see immediately after. A blend of sorrow because of imminent death, relief at having not been the cause of hundreds of others' deaths, and shame that of all of them, only the criminal had the courage to do the moral thing. Fantastic scene.

@lordmortarius538 Год назад
Yes, Maggie Gyllenhall was cast as Rachel for this as Katie Holmes had a packed shooting schedule, and actually declined to return despite Nolan wanting her back. The thing about the Joker's little origin stories he tells is that he makes it up every time, tailoring it to his audience at the time, just to see what kind of reaction they have to it because he gets off on that. He's always said that if he DID have an origin story, he'd prefer it to be multiple choice. The old man at the fundraiser who tells Joker that they're not intimidated by thugs is none other than Senior Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy, who is a HUGE Batman fan. During the Joker's little storytime with Rachel, Maggie had NO idea what Heath was going to do as he kind of ad-libbed that scene with her so when he put his hands on her with the knife she was genuinely frightened. Heath Ledger also developed the 'licking' tic of Joker's to explain why he was doing it; it was really because the scar prosthetics he was wearing would come loose if they got too dry so he'd be licking them to keep them in place.

The air extraction device that Batman used to leave the building was actually used by the US Air Force in the 1960’s -90’s. I learned how to set it up while attending Air Crew Life Support Technical School in 1976. The system was called The Fulton Surface-to-Air Recovery System (STARS). It was in use from 1965-1996 and was also used in several films… James Bond film “Thunderball” and in a John Wayne movie “The Green Berets”. And of course this movie……we were shown how to set it up be never were allowed to „Take the ride“…I‘ve done some pretty out there stuff but getting yanked off the ground by a plane doing probably 200-300mph would not have been my idea of a fun ride! And then hoping that the planes aircrew could reel me in safely……But when your 18 your invincible and will do anything once! After all…Live for the adventure! It may never come your way again. Cheers

Fun Fact: When Heath Ledger first gets off the elevator, that was the first time Alfred's actor (Michael Caine) had seen him in full makeup. Originally, Caine was supposed to have a line as Joker got off the elevator, but was so shaken by the appearance of Ledger in makeup that he froze up, and Ledger just went with it. Also, Rachel's actress Maggie Gyllenhaal (Who was a close friend of Ledger's) was legitimately terrified of Ledger during this scene. His "Do you know how I got these scars?" scene was completely improvised and you can see gyllenhaal's legitimate fear on her face in the scene.

Nolan always taking care of those little details (yes, his films have mistakes, like any other filmmaker, for example James Cameron or Chaplin, but that is already something universal, errors with the actors, historical accuracy, reflexes, planes that passed in the sky at that moment (gladiator) etc.).
