I think you missed something. The mother was also extremely abusive to Arthur. She was sick in the head and a lot of his extreme trauma was from her and peony head injuries too. And she said “he was always such a Happy boy” and in her illness kept abusing him as he laughed when he was probably actually crying or screaming but because of his condition kept laughing.

I always figured it was the mothers BF that abused him while she was in the house in her own illusion of reality and she would hear arthur laughing from another room and assume he was happy...

I’m such a fan of Heath Ledger’s performance of the Joker, i had a fairly closed mind going into this movie despite knowing JP is a master. Wow was I wrong. How can two actors play the same character SO differently, and yet so brilliantly? Incredible.

@@dallinorr6929 that performance of heath ledger's joker might have been the idea for multiple jokers from comics since jokers on live action was always portrayed the same from the 60s batman Cesar Romero to Jack Nicholson in 90s until Heath ledger changed it and now joaquin phoenix has another take on the role

It's implied in this movie that Arthur (The Joker) sufferers from the Pseudobulbar affect (PBA). Which is a neurological condition that causes outbursts of uncontrolled or inappropriate laughing or crying.

It’s always impressive to see an actor make such a character abhorrent yet you feel such sympathy- at the end you almost are rooting for him in his moment of bliss and acceptance among the crowd of clowns

Thanks for a great reaction. Even though this is a DC movie, it also works as a stand-alone film. You don't have to know anything about the DC universe to enjoy this. And it is disturbingly real, which adds weight to the movie's impact. Joaquim Phoenix is a legend.

There's an 11.11 theory, where every time a clock in the scene shows 11.11 it's the awakening moment for Joker. Watch the movie for the 2nd time and spot every clock you can find. Even the punch card clock count as well.

@@EmmaReactions I interpret it as that in the batman movies we see Thomas Wayne from Bruce's and Alfreds perspective. Of course he looks up to his father. In this film we see him from the opposite side

Another good psychological thriller you should watch is Falling Down with Micheal Douglas. Taken from IMDB "An ordinary man frustrated with the various flaws he sees in society begins to psychotically and violently lash out against them." Back to this movie, Joaquin did very good in this movie, acting is brilliant. He does a lot of acting with his eyes. Like in the scene when he got fired. He was smiling, the expression on his face was one of just accepting the situation, being passive but his eyes, the stare he was giving his now ex-boss was telling a different story. He didn't hurt the little guy towards the end because he was the only person who treated Author like a human being, being nice to him while everyone else was a POS.

I remember getting shocked like everybody else in the cinema's room by the scene where Joker kills Murray, frankly no one saw that coming haha. As a result of the film, Joaquin Phoenix won an Oscar, which he's waited for a long time.

40:49 Is when they did a great job incorporating the Batman story into a world where it isn't a cartoon but real. That is the genius of this film.

One thing to keep in mind while watching this, is that this is not our world. This is not New York City, this is Gotham City, Batman's world. Someone, a very long time ago, described Gotham as looking like a New York had New York never had planning commissions. Willy nilly zoning laws, and willy nilly local laws in general. It's been many decades since I grew out of Batman, but this is how I remember it described.

This performance by wacking fenix was absolutely mesmerizing and one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen. There are only a couple of other performances that are as good. Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood , Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over The Cookoos Nest, Leo DiCaprio in the Revenant, and Nicholas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas to name a few off the top of my head.

It's possible that when young Arthur Fleck was tied to a radiator. the radiator was polluted by ACE chemicals, something else with the same iosotic signature as ACE chemicals or part of ACE chemical formula and young Arthur's wounds were infected by the ACE chemical pollution going into his body and gave Arthur his laughing condition while the trauma in the head gave birth to Arthur's psychotic mental condition.

There are two movies that heavily influenced this movie. It was mostly inspired by the movies The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver both staring Robert De Niro himself. He played a very different character as that TV host in this movie.

While watching this amazing story unfold in the theater, I didn't realize how much of a great actor he was in the movie until I actually cheered when he... well gave Robert DeNiro's an immediate resignation as the show's host. Who cheers for a murderer? Or was I cheering for the man so unbelievably wronged by society and in that moment, I was convinced he, the Joker, was finally 'free' of his demons. But yeah... NOTHING like anyone expected in that theater and why it's easy to put his performance along side Heath's version of Joker. Also if you haven't, watch the interviews with Joaquin on all the research he did for the character and tiny additions he added to his performance because of what he learned during his research. Insane.

the biggest reason why I always follow Joker 2019 with The Batman 2022 everytime I watch it on my laptop, is because Joker 2019 ends with Batman's origin which is Bruce Wayne at a young age watching his parents being murdered by a punk with a gun..

People in the comments have certainly watched this movie several times just like me and when we watch a reaction we wanna see if the reactor got it or if it went over their heads which was the case. You may wanna watch it again in order to understand it fully. The editing wasn't great but nonetheless a reasonable reaction.

John Wayne Gacy aka The Killer Clown or Pogo the Clown was a serial rapist and killer of children in the 1960s and 1970s. He was executed in 1994. He was a monster who embodied the creepy clown image far more than any work of fiction could. The comedy club Pogo's where Arthur Fleck does his standup routine was an allusion to John Wayne Gacy.

Emma whatever you do DO NOT react to the piece of music where Arthur is dancing on the stairs on your other channel. It's a very good piece of music but you should know that the artist is Gary Glitter. There's a lot of very disgusting things about that man that I won't go into details about in your comments. When you know the context it adds to the creepiness of the scene.

Joker is not a good film, let alone a masterpiece, I'm sorry to say. Terribly sorry, even! 😬 I wanted to like it but was profoundly disappointed. I have a meticulously crafted set of reasons why I think Joker is awful (including two I haven't seen anyone else mention). I can also drop links to excellent videos that speak of how Joker fails, some of the points therein mingling with my own. That is, if you or anyone else here is interested. 😊
