My all-time favorite work for string orchestra!

A stately performance of a stately piece! Just fantastic.

Joly Braga Santos ( 1924-1988 ). Portuguese Composer. He was also a conductor and teacher at the National Conservatory in Lisbon. In 1969, he won the UNESCO award with his 5th Symphony .

One of the greats during the 20th century, he was astonishingly prodigious in his twenties, having composed four symphonies in four years! An increasing and always developing list of interests split his time dramatically after 1956--too bad for us listeners. He might have been so much more prodigious in his output. Still, that is looking back. In his time, he filled so many roles that most wondered where he found the time. Braga Santos is a very appealing composer--As Villa-Lobos is my favorite Brazilian classical composer (I almost noted Antonio Carlos Jobim as my favorite Brazilian, but it is unfair to categorize him as a classical composer), Braga Santos is my favorite Portuguese composer. Both are irresistable.

Just discovered this gorgeous work. Love most of the compositions of this composer and this is no exception. Unfortunately little known outside Portugal. How sad is that!

he has channelled Vaughn Williams by the sound of it, which is no bad thing.

I swear I heard the first part of this concerto before in a movie or something.

Easy-going but deeply-felt, this beautiful work is a real gem, although I thought the final movement didn't quite match the excellence of the first two.

In this performance the tempo, in the 3rd movement, is considerably slower than it should be! This lack of understanding on the part of Álvaro Cassuto robs the piece from the impact it should have! I'm sure the composer (whom I knew personally reasonably well) wouldn't approve of this "watered down" reading... It hasn't "nerve", it hasn't "impetus"... Two things that Braga Santos didn't lack. AC is not always Braga Santos best interpreter... Shared on Google+
