Maybe I’m misinterpreting this bit, but the one line “did I really have any of that gravity? Maybe you’re quicksand. Cause I really couldn’t tell how deep my footprints went” always felt to me like the singer thinks the listener is being overdramatic, and that the things he didn’t weren’t that bad. And for some reason that makes it my favorite part of the song. I sing it to myself starting from here with slight alterations like “I swear I’m not even trying” and “I swear I’m not even sorry” because it nearly completely changes the song into one about getting out of a toxic relationship instead of being the toxic one in a relationship.
