As a French guy, I feel like I have to say that just to pass on information to English speaking audience. Gane used to have huge momentum, true. But it's been a rough couple of years for him. He got trashed by some dumb people on the social media after being annihilated by Jones and then waited a long time to come back to take Spivac which kept on upsetting people because most of us knew it was a no match. And now he's widely criticized for ducking fights and then calling out Aspinall when he has a belt. And now even the fight against Volkov is disappointing for French audience. Most people wanted him to fight Jailton Almeida to show his grappling level and be done with this "Gane has no ground game" narrative, but apparently he doesn't feel this way and a big chunk of his fan base is drifting away or even pissed at him at the moment.

BSD is really popular but maybe he doesn't attract the same type of people (he's white, former special forces soldier, catholic,e tc.) so his image is very different from Cyril's who's more the likeable, trendy and good vibes guy. I guess you also have to throw Doumbè in the mix but imo he's more of a casuals' choice.

The biggest loss in credibility for the UFC is the permanent shortage of having a clean and consequent system of qualification match making up to the top of the list till the title.
Insane alternative universe Jones is stripped, Aspinal defends the undisputed title against Pereira, Pereira wins the heavyweight title and is matched up against Gane. (Gane doesn't deserve another title shot, but the match up would be sick)
Gane vs Pereira would be boring. Pereira would just take him down and probably submit him. Gane sucks luckily that division only has about 4 guys that should be called mix Martial artist and gane has managed to avoid all of them.
