This is just freaking AWESOME. When we talk of the keyboard gods of yesteryear, inevitably Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson will be at the top of the list - as they should be. But Mr. Lord absolutely belongs up there in that pantheon (and so does Rod Argent, for that matter). Jon was as great an artist on the B3 as has ever lived. So many of the wonderful musicians who composed the soundtracks to our lives have left us. Thankfully, their contributions live on in their recordings and videos like this, and we are the richer for it.

Love it. Many years ago, when Pentangle were in the charts, and jazz-folk wasn't a joke genre. I heard a band play this as an encore in my local folk club. Hearing a room full of pissed folkies trying to clap along in 7/8 is an experience I shall never be able to (or want to) forget.

I recall some 15 years ago standing immediately behind Jon Lord in a queue in the Henley on Thames Waitrose, he living in that town. It was a little tempting to gently hum Smoke on the Water, but I wisely decided I couldn't do that to such a genial rock god. I also got to see him play in my then local pub, The Crooked Billet at Stoke Row. He performed in an evening of music and spoken word, with raconteur Sir John Mortimer and the actress, Joanna David. An amazing evening from such a collection of talent.

One of the masterpieces, thogether with Take Five (in 5/4), Take Ten (in 10/8) and Blue Rondo a La Turk (in 9/8), and this one is in 7/8. These all were created, just after a visit for a two days tour to Ankara/Turkey, in 1959. There was a Turkish jazz band in the same club, led by a very talented young musician called Suheyl Denizci. Mr. Brubeck asked Mr. Denizci if he could show some examples of Turkish music. Next night he brought a friend of his, who was a very expert local musician and a student in the famous Berklee Music school, which made him a very good answer to Mr. Brubeck and his bandmates. They got the opportunity to study what they asked for, with this young guy, whose name was Yavuz Özüstün. After this mini tour, they created these pieces, all in Turkish time characer and especially Take Five became a hit in college radios, and reached 25 in Billboard Top 100 list. Take Five is still the most successful and most covered jazz piece off all times. My mom and dad were in the audience in the club and lucky enough to get autographs of all members on a piece of paper, which is one of the most precious items on my wall. Later, I was lucky enough to be a member in Mr. Denizci's band and a student for Mr. Özüstün which enabled me to verify the story of Take Five and others. I hope they all rest in peace.
