The film they were about to present was "love is a dream" which you can look up on Vimeo. it's blocked by RU-vid's copyright system, so don't comment and ask why I didn't include the clip.
Jon Lovitz gives an emotional tribute to the late Phil Hartman. This aired shortly after Phil's death and was shown before the airing of the "Love is a Dream" segment. I was unable to find this elsewhere online.
Jon Lovitz:
"My older brother Phil Hartman spent eight years at Saturday Night Live and he eventually worked with over 25 cast members who were with us in the beginning."
Jan Hooks:
"The following is a film that Phil and I did in our third season. This is for you, Phil, we love you so much."

I know this may sound trivial, but even with the great body of comedic work Phil Hartman created, I still like to post the little SNL video of him, Lovitz and Nealon doing the Christmas greeting each holiday as Frankenstein, Tonto and Tarzan! I have caught flak in recent years by folks online that it is profiling and racist, but it is the small chuckle Phil keeps giving to me each year. :-)

I would have just been devastated. Like many of his fans I didn’t know him personally of course, and this happened in 1998. I was 11 years old. I still get chills. I feel so bad for his friends and family. That was Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz. Bill Clinton and Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer and Frankenstein from SNL. He was the perfect straight man. In films he was successful and well liked. He would have gotten such a bigger break in films and it just really sucks. He was such a massive talent and even though Small Soldiers wasn’t great, that wasn’t his fault either. He was the best part of that movie. Geez I just remembered that he worked with Paul Ruebens and co-wrote Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. Pretty sure he designed some album covers too. Again. Tremendous individual. I still think about this when I watch Futurama knowing that. He was clearly meant to play Captain Zap Brannigan had he lived. This was weirdly my first fascination with a celebrity death. Phil Hartman gave us New Jersey folks what Joe Piscopo never did: A funny Frank Sinatra impression, and that's worth ten thousand laughs. Just kidding. Phil was much funnier to me as so many other things but he died just after I was born. Still, he's undoubtedly one of the GOATs of American comedy and it's easy to recognize just how beloved and decent of a person he was.

This is still my all time favorite cast in SNL history. I was about 12 years old when their tenure started and they got me absolutely hooked on the show from that point forward. Everyone of them brought their A game! Dana, Jan, Nora and ESPECIALLY Phil were absolutely GOLDEN! RIP Phil! RIP Jan!

All of them with their own style and different from each other but love one another. I can't imagine the anger they must have felt along side the greiving sadness. That wife of Phil's caused alot of emotional damage and suffering.

That "People's Court" skit where Jon was Mr. Methostopheles, aka- the devil- arguing over the hair dryers will always stand as a classic. Jan Hooks as the barfly mother to Rosanne Arquette, Kevin Neelan as Doug and the man himself Phil Hartman nailing down Judge Wapner. Even Rusty had a cameo role trying to get the devil to keep it moving. 😂😂😂

I'll never forget talking to my mom in our kitchen when we heard the CNN Breaking News theme (back when "breaking news" wasn't sensationalized). Yeah I remember because I was in 7th grade and that videogame Blasto just came out on Playstation and Phil Hartman made that videogame work (the game is crap, but his voice work is what makes the game memorable.) I remember the tragic death of Chris Farley and then here just 2 years later Phil Hartman learned the hard way to just stay unmarried or REALLY VET every woman that you let into your home.

I was in high school and bright eyed by the time I fell in love with Phil. Then I was off out of my mind when this all happened and heard about his passing while incarcerated. And even though I've been clear for over two decades, I just never could revisit this story. I never processed it. And whenever I end up stumbling back on it, it's almost like a new story, even though I of course know what happened.
