It says that the electorate can't distinguish a good candidate from a bottom feeder. Democracy depends on an informed, educated, and discerning electorate. If the electorate is none of those things, then democracy will fail. With Trump winning 74 million votes, it's already clear how close to the edge the US actually is. A combination of a corrupted political system and an incompetent electorate is very bad news for democracy. Perhaps when we look back we'll realize that the Georgia election was actually a watershed moment when the US either slipped over the edge, or was able claw its way back to something resembling a democracy.
