For more reading: “Senate Republicans block bipartisan border package, scrapping deal they had demanded from Democrats”, 7 Feb 2024, PBS Republicans don't want to actually improve the situation at the border. That would be politically inconvenient.
@jvoet123
@jvoet123 Месяц назад
THIS wasn't the deal they demanded. If it was it would have passed. Do you really think that the Democrat controlled Senate created a border bill containing Republican wish list items? Funny how the House of Reps passed their own border security bill last year that was DOA in the Senate, but no one is talking about that. I don't recall the 2023 headlines saying, "Democrats don't want to actually improve the situation at the border."

It would also increase the capacity for ICE detention capacity from 34,000 to 50,000. It would mean people who arrive in the U.S. illegally would not be able to claim amnesty and it would force the government to shut down the border at times where there is a 7-day rolling average of 5,000 encounters per day, or 8,500 encounters in a single day. When encounters approach 4,000 people a day, the U.S. government would be granted the power to voluntarily turn away all people at border stations. @@jvoet123

The border bill would provide for an additional 100 asylum judges, increasing the number by 13% from 743 to 843 judges. At the same time, we've had a 250% increase in "asylum" seekers. Please explain how these 100 judges will make the process 12X faster.

@@jvoet123 It increased patrol officers, reduced time to deportations and increased judges needed to facilitate those deportations. For you to say what you said takes a stunning amount of ignorance.
@jvoet123
@jvoet123 Месяц назад
@@elephant_888 So the current average wait time is 4.3 years. If that's reduced to 3.7 years, how does that deter people from coming here? And the patrol officers and judges are not there to deport, they're there to fascilitate assylum claims. In Trump's last year in office there were 186,000 deportations (41% of all illegal crossings). In Biden's 1st year in office there were 59,000 deportations (3.4% of all illegal crossings). That's a MASSIVE difference. Why is that?
@jvoet123
@jvoet123 Месяц назад
@@elephant_888 The patrol officers and judges are there to facilitate asylum seekers, not strictly for deportations. This administration is deporting FAR fewer immigrants than the previous administration with a much larger work force. Why is that?
