Fun Fact: he had an audition to be Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, but he couldn’t since during that time he was still the Doctor. This man could’ve been Willy Wonka. *”Come with me, and you’ll be, in world of scientific safety violations!”*

Working in a Hotel near the Humber Bridge early 80's and Jon Pertwee (who was really tall) came in dressed as Worzel Gummidge. He heard there was a Wedding going on in and went down and into the gathering making everyone's day by doing 'Worzel.' I'd met a few famous faces in Catering, but none as pleasant to meet as Jon Pertwee, who made a lot of people happy that day and added something special to a Wedding Party. He seemed to be a genuine Gent.

What a talented and naturally funny man he was, and sadly missed. I had the good fortune to meet him twice in his Worzle Gummidge guise, with my little boy who hero worshipped him. Once at Shrewsbury Flower show where my 2 year old son asked 'Where's Turnip Head?' and Worzle replied 'Oh, he's gone up to the great compost heap in the sky!' Then we saw him again as Worzle, at the Liverpool Garden Festival. After some photos together - I joined him for a cup of tea and asked when the next series is due. He said 'That's what I want to know!'.. he then stated that there were talks of it being done in New Zealand, but he seemed very unhappy about it at that time. I was so lucky to have met him and talked with him. I have always been a fan of his work, and stopped watching Dr Who when he finished his turn at the role. God bless you Jon xx

If I remember the story correctly, at one point, Jon Pertwee worked for the British government in the "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" as a secret agent. Badass? Yes. Did anyone else notice how much like Patrick Troughton he looks in the final clip with Wogan? I remember reading his autobiography over 30 years ago "Moon Boots and Dinner Suits" which was very interesting ...... we remember him now as the 3rd Doctor Who but his background was fascinating .... he was a regular stand up comedian at one point which is totally forgotten now. During the war I believe he was part of the crew of the battleship HMS Hood but, being under 18, was amongst those taken off on the orders of its Captain before it went looking for the German cruiser Bismark. On that mission the Hood went down with the loss of almost the entire crew.

If he/ she is American, Doctor a Who was shown in some public television markets in the early '70s.

Doctor who wasn't seen in the US until 1974, carried by PBS stations. Why so many apply their idea who was the first doctor was the one they'd seen more of, Tom Baker.

I reomend checking out Doctor Who magazine #457 and #458. They have a fantastic two part interview with Jon Pertwee where he opens up about his origins and his thoughts about Doctor Who.

It was also a shocking story about his war time experiences and his near miss as a member of the crew of the HMS Hood which was sunk by the Germans losing all hands.I think he was in hospital at the time, or on shore for some other reason. There are a number of clues to his Naval links throughout the Dr. Who stories. Not to mention his links to the 'Navy Lark'.

Lie-eh-voh actually. "Vault" would be pronounced simply as the V followed by a long O (which is precisely how Jon pronounces it). The L and the T are completely silent. It's easier to hear him say it when Parkinson asks him to repeat it.

Fantastic collection! Joan Collins makes a beautiful complement to Pertwee in the Michael Parkinson interview (not meaning, of course, to take anything away from her in her own right). And Jon indeed had an incredible capacity for being hilarious!
