As Clinton mentions, "selective memory" and the facts of the times. America was crazy right wing conservative during these times to the point were gay marriage may have been banned by constitutional amendment. Conservatives were "law and order" insane. The country has changed, he has changed, he did the best he could at the time. Every child must feel like they are valued. Easier said than done, consider a place like Afghanistan or how much Trump's mentality has set us back. Imho he is a genius and one of the best communicators this side of Lincoln. Who else is giving back to this extent. Btw, I've had my run-in's with the law. It's a crime and can make life and one's future very difficult. Something needs to change. " your daughter set you free " for many kids that grow up in abusive homes, or people who have suffered domestic abuse, having someone to love and provide a future for, transforms their lives more than any education, other relationship, or career. We should remember this, when helping young single mothers get a foothold into a decent life, as we help them get a roof over their heads and begin their lives - we should remember, and not resent the life line oir taxes give a damaged soul xxxx

My thoughts as well. In this case it's best not to take political sides. Every president is hindered by partisan gains. Possibly the measure of their failure or success is measured by what they do after their presidency. with a brilliant mind and empathy one can go a long way to make up for what they could not accomplish in office.

He did not use his middle name simply because he was ashamed of being Jewish. In fact, in just about every stand up I've ever seen him in, he talks about being Jewish all the time. He used Jon Stewart because 1. Easier to announce in small clubs starting out, and 2. He did not want association with his father's last name - who left his mom when he was young to be with his secretary. When he and his wife got married they legally changed it to Stewart.

My comment was not about their Presidencies, but about the dedication to public service, and character displayed by the actions AFTER leaving office. Carter has been a fine example of this. Reagan made no attempt, but he was old and ill, so I give him a pass. Ford did little, though he had almost 25 healthy years after office. The senior Bush has done a bit (almost all in cooperation with Clinton initiatives) and George jr. has done very little and most of that was, again through or with Clinton
@pdoylemi
@pdoylemi 12 лет назад
Trust me, if you have lived as close to Grand Rapids, Michigan as I have for the past 40 years, you would know. He was only 11 years older than Jimmy Carter and didn't have any serious health problems until he was about 90 (2003). And he was healthy enough in 1980 to seriously consider another run for President. Not to say he was a bad man - he wasn't. I just don't think his dedication to national service quite lives up to Carter and Clinton.
@pdoylemi
@pdoylemi 12 лет назад
Yes, he didn't initiate much but, at least when asked to serve, he did so while he was able. That was probably one of the biggest differences between Bush and the Shrub. Bush was an actual combat pilot, Shrub learned to fly obsolete planes to dodge the draft. Bush served his country, Shrub defaulted on Small Business Administration loans. Bush, whatever his faults, is respected in the world, Shrub has to be careful traveling abroad for fear of arrest as a war criminal. He must be proud.
@pdoylemi

If GW is doing that, he is doing a shitty job of it. I searched his charities and found nothing except for his fundraising millions for his Presidential library. Knowing that he seemed to have some real concern for AIDs in Africa, I took your post quite seriously. Unfortunately, if GW is doing anything like you say, he is doing it with the same level of incompetence that marked his Presidency. George Sr. has the excuse of age, but most of what he has done is in concert with Clinton.
@pdoylemi
@pdoylemi 12 лет назад
It's probably as noble as he can get. Especially since he likely still has no real idea how badly he did mess up. If he did, I think he would be dedicating himself to make amends and perhaps rehabilitate himself in the eyes of the world. However, this fits his pattern - try something, fail dismally and run away. His "military service", his failed oil business, and his Presidency - all dismal. His Governorship was no too terrible, so I guess he had to take that next step...
@pdoylemi
@pdoylemi 12 лет назад
They do now, as will Jimmy Carter in a few years. However, being from Michigan, where Ford, our only President, could barely wipe his rear without local news covering it, it is interesting how little I ever heard about him post White House. Reagan stayed coherent enough for some speaking tours before Alzheimer's incapacitated him - but I'll give him a pass - he was old and ill. Nixon certainly had his excuse, but it hardly speaks well of the quality of men the GOP has put in the Oval Office.
@pdoylemi
@pdoylemi 12 лет назад
Did I say it did not count? No - I said his participation was laudable. There is a world of difference, however, between someone who is willing to do some traveling and lend his name to a project when asked, and someone who makes it his life's work every day to go out and seek ways to help others. I am not saying that Bush is a bad man, in fact, he & Clinton have become friends doing these things. if your life reflects your concern for your fellow man, I think these lives are telling.
@pdoylemi
@pdoylemi 12 лет назад
Yes, I have. Did you know that this was an Obama initiative? President Bush was asked to participate with President Clinton as Clinton had asked for (and received) President Bush's assistance with aid for Katrina and the Asian Tsunami. While his participation is laudable and important to get conservatives to support these efforts, neither he, nor his son have initiated any philanthropic endeavors. Reagan was healthy enough to do speaking tours but given his age & health I can give him a pass.
@pdoylemi
@pdoylemi 12 лет назад
Why does it seem, in the modern age, when Presidents leave office young and healthy enough to do something after leaving office, that only Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton have? Could this, JUST POSSIBLY, be an indication of the kind of people we elected - where their priorities are? Habitat for Humanity and the Clinton Global Initiative have done a great deal of good for the world, and these former Presidents seem dedicated to helping. Where were Ford, Reagan, Bush, & Bush? Think, folks.

You'd know, and you probably wouldn't know much else. Read my comment again. Then read your response. There is no real connection between them. I never even said the word 'do', so what the hell do you mean by 'Do What'? Also, your response includes no retort to the content of my comment whatsoever, and consists of a random assortment of ad hominems. I think I'm going to avoid replying to whatever nonsense you reply to this with, though, to avoid sinking deeper into the quicksand of your idiocy.

That is awful to say the least. Though I'm hesitant to agree that makes Clinton an evil man. Presidents make hard decisions all the time, and the calls they make don't always turn out to be the right ones. Whatever else you say about Clinton though, he -- unlike GW, for an easy example -- hasn't tried to fade away into the background. He's active on the global scene and he's doing really good work. It may not change what he did in the past, but he's doing good things now. That is important.

I don't know about how little Elder Bush has done. He and Clinton have connected alot .It is kind of ironic since Shrub has that many less years to deal with "Governor of Texas duties" and at that much older of an age when his kids were older so therefore he has done that much less work so you would think he would do more to stay in the spotlight but maybe he is content to chilax in Texas. It seems 'elder" bush at former life close to current clintons age (who could have mentally retired at 65

Yea Clinton definitely initiates, but I also look at H.W. Bush and think that he was (in a former life) Mr. Bill Clinton's age now a days so I don't know how willing to go "gung ho" he would've been 15 years ago in his late 60s. Even now with clinton, I see pictures of him and his beloved and I think they have given alot professionally of themselves as a Former President and Former First Lady so it somewhat surprises me that Bill hasn't retired from traveling and working. It is exciting how

Reagan was barely in good healty post white house (even I know that and I was only born in his first term in the white house) Not sure about younger bush. he and laura have as much as clintons work retired. Not sure how old ford was post wh but bush older was in his mid-60s (even close to later 60s) so that is about as likely as clinton to "start" a list of 100 places to go at that age) and I wouldn't be surprised if Clinton would slow down--likely if chelsea starts a family)

Re: the ongoing display of ignorance by onstage. RoomMonitor, being ignorant is to be unaware, uninformed, unlearned of a certain set of facts. Now, being stupid that is being unable, incapable of understanding those facts when they are presented to you. Your little brained friend onstageagain is someone who seems very, very proud of the fact that he possesses both traits.

Is a president's real stance only shown after presidency? If so, it's really changes the game. They can't in the white house, but are left alone after office. It makes you think of how we should vote....for the immediate or the the future promise of their message. I don't know if I care as long as we have the time. Just a thought.

and - well how much he like to drink again, now he is not forced to be on 24 hours a day...poor guy. He should never have been forced to be president. He looks so happy when he was on his range, and looked so misserable when he was acting like he was a president.

Bush has done a lot of AIDs related work in Africa, but not as much. But yeah you're right.

The evolution thing is disappointing. Once Paul fell out of the GOP primary, I put my support behind Gary Johnson. He's actually a better choice but is lesser known. It'd be great to add a 3rd party to reduce the extremes in American politics.

Yes, yes, yes. But you see, everything that you said is true for ALL of the other candidates, too. So when you get right down to it... who cares..? It'll be the same result, no matter what. We've been bought and sold. All of us.

I think that is ingrained in people from media. I know I lived through both clinton and bush 1 and now obama. people just respected clinton from the get go and from the get go bush 1 was "a funny guy who couldn't talk worth a lick"

One of the reasons our nation is the best on earth, is that a jewish kid from jersey ended up interviewing the King of Jordan. This is the only place on earth where a jew could interview a descendant of Mohamed.

Biden could use this conversation and turn it into action as part of his climate pledge. Imagine Hillary/Bill and Bernie working together on this with John Kerry?

RoomMonitor is right, and I'd like to add to his comment a simple question directed towards you: Would you've wanted Mitt Romney in office? Seriously think about it, just for two or three minutes: Romney.

I am glad Bush doesnt speak in public, it was hard enough to listen to him when he was in office. To be fair though, Reagan did have Alzhiemer's, I do think he was cut above Bush jr.
