Commenting on the prize, Stewart said, “I am truly honored to receive this award. I have long admired and been influenced by the work of Mark Twain, or, as he was known by his given name, Samuel Leibowitz.”
“For more than three decades, Jon Stewart has brightened our lives and challenged our minds as he delivers current events and social satire with his trademark wit and wisdom. For me, tuning into his television programs over the years has always been equal parts entertainment and truth”
- Deborah F. Rutter, Kennedy Center President
The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor recognizes individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist, and creator of characters, Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective on social injustice and personal folly.
As a recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Stewart received a copy of an 1884 bronze portrait bust of Mark Twain sculpted by Karl Gerhardt (1853-1940). Previous recipients can be seen by scrolling down this page.
Capital One® is the Presenting Sponsor of this year’s Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor as part of the bank’s three-year, $3 million gift to fund Comedy at the Kennedy Center, a signature program at the Center focused on elevating comedy as an art form and uniting the community through laughter.
The 23rd Mark Twain Prize for American Humor is under the direction of the creative team from Done + Dusted, the Kennedy Center’s producing partner for the Mark Twain Prize since 2018. This year’s ceremony marks the 23rd year that the Kennedy Center’s marquee comedy award will be broadcast nationally.
The event was created by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Bob Kaminsky, Peter Kaminsky, Mark Krantz, and John Schreiber. The Kennedy Center is grateful to Cappy McGarr for his steadfast support of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor since its inception in 1998.

@@PapagenoMF Idk about that. Dave does hour long comedy standup sets just freestyle on the regular. He's the best in the world at what he does and it isn't unbeleivable that he free styled this speech. I imagine he atleast had a few bullet points written down about subjects he wants to touch on. However, I do beleive the speech was improvised.

Dave Chappelle is one of the most eloquent people to ever hold a mic. I can attest to Jon Stewart's kindness. I get a Wish from Make-A-Wish when I was 16. Jon's humor helped me get through chemo and radiation for two brain tumors. So, I wanted to see a taping of The Daily Show and thank him for making me laugh during the darkest time of my life. My whole family got to meet him in a green room after the show. It was surreal. My sister got a hug from him because she was the only person shorter then him in my family. My point is, I could feel the quality of Jon's character, which Chappelle so eloquently described. And, I have the utmost respect for both of those comedians.

That line was simple YET VERT HARD one at the same time, especially the way he emotionally said it too and meant it. Imagine having someone that says means and actually does COME whenever you want be it in hell or heaven wherever they might be. That friend going to vacation in Australia and you calling him as soon as he lands on the airport, instantly cancels everything, tells the airport stuff he needs another plane back ASAP, simple thing yet very powerful. And he's the only guy I know who actually phones other people up _just_ to see how they are 🤔 He was really ill a couple of years back and spent a week in hospital so he needed a bit of help with his business and home life and a small army of volunteers assembled from across the country to try and repay some of his kindness. How these people are DEMONISED for speaking truth, when we should all aim to be straight up. It is a great thing when someone stands up not for themselves, but for others. Jon and Dave, John Oliver, Colbert... it's how the ones losing their minds at the tate if the world, get their REAL news, and it's with a joke and a smile, so it doesn't hut so hard. Satire is there to poke fun at people, but never maliciously, unless, they absolutely warrant it. And Jon's speech to Congress over the 911 funding not being extended at least, you're spot on. These people give you goosebumps. And I have started finding old school politicians, attractive, because of their POLICIES!!!! My last relationship, in both senses of the word, I finished it because he was an absolute airhead!! Hahaha. Comments like yours, and many others here, give the rest of us hope, that sanity is still a thing. What happened here, with the RNLI, a volunteer coast guard, rescuing refugees near drowning, and they got a torrent of abuse, from people telling them they shouldn't be wasting THEIR FREE TIME... to save refugees, first from war, and now, an earthquake. These people are poor, because we stoke their resources and raped and pillaged. We ALL need to step up, as one. Hollywood is all BS If they gave a shit they'd donate and not fund raise... So. In summary, sorry , but Jon is a great guy. And the video is playing in the background... More of this. In unison. Because the world is in trouble. Dave has matured to be the most _masterful_ comedian of our time. I see his name and I immediately click, not just because I know it will be funny. I click because I know whatever he has to say will be said in the most engaging, the most passionate, and at the same time the most humorous way imaginable. As a public speaker myself I will tell you it's no small feat to pull off all three simultaneously. Facts tell, but stories sell. If you're ever going to give a tribute to someone who means a lot to you, this is how you do it - engagingly, humorously, and authentically. Hats off to you Dave. Always a pleasure to see you speak.

Self derision is always the safest form of comedy. Its what made Louis CK famous, and if you watch Ricky Gervais' FIRST Golden Globes then they were mostly self derision. You can't go wrong with that because if you make fun of yourself, you can't get offended. The reality is that what is 'off limits' right now is essentially what you'd call 'vindictive comedy', which is stuff that should have been off limits ages ago. Actually, it usually was. You can actually still do 'generality' jokes, virtually nobody complains if you make jokes at the expense of politicians. Go watch a Bill Hicks or George Carlin act and it still holds up just fine. You can still do silly british style humour so basically what is out of line are the low hanging fruit that has always made for pretty bad comedy. Its the people who are infatuated with identity politics and want to make jokes about it that suffer, and frankly they weren't funny anyway. Its not like there is any lack of subject to base humour on. When comedians do that, they are essentially going for the easy crowd appeal, like when they walk into Denver and say its the greatest city in the world or that Boulder sucks. There has ALWAYS been stuff off limits, hell, go ask Leenny Bruce.
@margarinetaintedgreen8140
@margarinetaintedgreen8140 Год назад
@@mikearchibald744Literally every single joke ever made is at someone else’s expense, even if that someone is the joke-teller themselves. Unless one has never laughed at a joke in their life, they have no leg to stand on when they criticize others for “laughing at someone else’s expense.” One should never be able to get away with that hypocrisy. No person is more special than the other in comedy, and I find it condescending and patronizing that liberal whites think that certain kinds of people are too fragile and weak to be made fun of. It's obvious how these two guys love and respect each other. Dave is such an amazing storyteller and orator. Another thing I noticed is how much John's wife laughed and enjoyed herself throughout. Having a partner in life who shares the same sense of humor and way of looking at life is invaluable, and I am sure has heavily contributed to how grounded, real, funny, intelligent, and genuine the guy is.

I love Dave, luckily as a 17 year old male he felt safe around Jon in a disturbing industry and world where 17 year olds are always in an extremely vulnerable position. Too bad Alicia Silverstone can't share that same experience with Jon....Makes you see him totally different. Go check out that interview to see the real Jon, absolutely sick.

@@youtubepremiumaccount4063 I saw that Interview that You suggested that We check out, and Jon Stewart was on the borderline of being, as You have called it 'Pervy'. Jon did not make advances toward Alicia at all when I saw that clip, and If He really wanted to, He could have gone truly 'Pervy' and behaved like that Serious XM* 'Shock Jock' Howard Stern and then You would see what being 'Pervy' really looks like! I have even read Comments on RU-vid* that have accused Jon and MTV* for sexualizing that moment in the clip where Alicia held up Her Leg to make a Cracking Sound under the Boom Mike that was lowered for Her (Her 'Leg Crack' was barely noticable), and Jon followed Her lead and held up His Leg and Cracked it also (You can unmistakengly hear the Loud Cracking Sound His Leg gave off!). I must also remind You that Alicia rose to Fame using Her Good Looks, so She was definitely well aware of how Hyper-Sexualized Hollywood was, and still is Today. Who knows, with better representation, Alicia's Career would most likely be in a better place right now. It's good to know that over time, and with more Women in charge becoming Producers, Writers and Directors, that Shift in Power for Women in Hollywood is changing in Their favor so now They can decide how They want to be seen in the Media, instead of going by the Old-School Mindsets from Ever-Horny Males of how They think Women should be seen only as Sex Objects. (P.S.: Just so You know, this is written by a Male!)

@@bakersupreme2010I appreciate the attentiveness and attention span you have clearly stretching quite a bit beyond what most people(specifically Americans) can claim. To your points though, it wasn't as much about what he said, as it was the way he said it. She said "I'm 17" and he very awkwardly responded with "coool"...With a strange awkward pause and smile after clearly making her immediately uncomfortable. I mean everyone in the room knew why he said that. Whether it was more about the silence after or the comment itself is irrelevant to me, as I PERSONALLY see that as creep 101. What's so "cooool" about her being 17 and glaring at her akwardly after that for a good 5 seconds? Why was that a moment worth making? Let her answer that she's a minor, maybe show that you're impressed in what she's achieved so young, then move on. But no he proceeded to do that, and then show her in the Aerosmith video where she was inherently sexualized by the group(would hope you wouldn't disagree with that as they actually got in trouble for that, I belive by either hers or the other teenage girl who appeared in the videos parents). Do you have the answers my good sir?

His punchlines are slipped in so subtly they worm their way under your anticipation and slap you in the face. It's like the opposite of thunder and lightning. You hear the words, but the laughter takes a second to come in. With other comedians, your mind sees the punchline coming a split second before the joke lands, so your expectations soar instantaneously. Your guard is up subconsciously, even if you don't want it to be. The joke can't help but be deflated a little by being compared to your peak expectation. Chappelle has that shifty jab that hits you between the eyes and is already gone before the feeling can set in. And all you can do is laugh about it.
