The craziest thing in our nation and we have lots of them, is the fact that we legally consider corporations “people”. That has got to be the FIRST thing to go.

I was just reading about the odd primeval enclave City of London and their strange elections that allow _livery companies_ an allotment of votes toward representative governance. Maybe that was somewhere in Roscoe Conkling’s mind when he proposed this corporate personhood nonsense? Regardless, it is also true that UK legislated multiple massive reforms of electoral systems in both the 19th and 20th centuries in response to continued public outcry, moving further and further away from those ancient traditions of the City of London. The same should be possible here in USA, but we need an effective Congress (and a SCOTUS that refrains from legislating) to do so.

The Electoral College could be a system whereby the citizens of each Congressional District name the person iin their District who they think would be a good President. The most nominated person would gather with other highly respected citizens, on that special Monday in December. These would be the Electors, but they would make that presidential decision as to who would be good as a next President. The problem w/ the Electoral College is not that we might turn to our most trusted citizens to decide who should hold that office. It is that the College is not made up of our most trusted citizens who have the national interest in mind. Electors are chosen according to who will promise to put party ahead of nation.

Ranked Choice Voting!!!!! That is far an away the biggest way to impact our politics by reducing the power of the 2 parties, getting away from the divisiveness a 2 party system fosters and making way to start getting money out of politics and assuring that every voter will have a final say when it comes down to the final 2 candidates by ranking them.

Thank you, Jon, for your passion, heart and intelligence. Thanks to Doris for her breadth of historical perspective (the system can change!), and Eugene's journalistic views -- I agree that Biden's campaign suffered fatal self-inflicted wounds when he uttered "We finally beat Medicare," as well as his uncompleted sentences. Afterward, he was unable to show that the debate was about an episode (as opposed to a condition). I still wonder if his debate performance was a surprise because of his protective "handlers," or the gradual-weight-gain theory. Eugene's explanation of the Democratic party machine and Biden's POV makes sense. I wish you all well on your quest to slay the dragons of campaign finance, media dramatization (vs. illumination), and the Electoral College. At the root of our current situation is lust for political power. If you look at the primary narratves of both presidential candidates, they use fear to drive votes to attain that power. Voters want to protect their values and vocations (e.g. income, livlihoods, lifestyles, survival [roof over your head, victuals, etc.]). Money is the life blood of campaigns (that's why fund raising gets so much attention). Some people and organizations will stop at nothing to perpetuate their values and vocations, dumping billions of dollars into races. You may want campaign finance reform, but many of the people who make the rules are afraid of campaign fund limits. If you can create a groundswell of support for reform, they might listen. The media will continue to dramatize the election process to get clicks so they can feed themselves. Fact distribution and analysis are not as sexy as agenda-laden opinions. People share their opinions and spend time in echo chambers (e.g. Fox, MSNBC) because they love to be right (perhaps I'm doing that right now!). You can look at Q-anon to see how religious pandering, feelings and conspiracies are sexier for the masses than well-researched and reasoned analysis... emotions drive us more than intellect (study marketing if you doubt that). Example: Christians who will vote for a sex offender / alleged adulterer / felon who was admonished by the Pope for his views on immigrants and climate change. Unlike the days of CBS News with Walter Cronkite, a few other network news stations, and some major newspapers, we now have thousands of sources of information vying for attention and relevance. I love the Daily Show and John Oliver, but are they making an impact outside of their audience demographics? Given all that, how do you propose to transform the media? Abolishing the Electoral College would be extremely difficult (Constitutional amendment in this devisive environment?). How would small states see it in their interest to support that? Perhaps you can drum up support for the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. To foment change, I think we need to find bipartisan common ground and make proposals that don't overly threaten people's values, vocations, and victuals. Change is already scary, especially for conservatives who want to preserve traditions. Let us work together to build a country that works for just about everyone, and be aware of imposing our values on others.

For the majority of history in the US, there was no necessary primary system. Hell, up until the 20th century, many candidates never even held rallies or put themselves out there for people to interact with. Candidates were selected at the convention in July through certainly corrupt back room deals and the campaigns were only for 4 months. The reason it changed was under the guise of empowering voters but it was really just to give more time for donors to line the pockets of both parties.

The only way I see a political change of that magnitude happening in America is going around the party system. Building the whole proposal of a new electoral system and making it go to votes as a referendum in the elections in all states. But it would require a big campaign, debates and so on, so that everyone is aware of what the proposal means.

My wish for American politics is a reset by introducing Proportional Representation (PR). There are different models for it but they basically all aim to ensure parliament looks like people voted percentage wise or in other words like the public vote. All votes have equal weight. It would allow a true multi-party system and consensus based politics.

I have been hearing some version of this discussion for nearly 30 years. Every time it's some luminary who says to the rest of us, as if we don't know, that the system is terrible because the incentives are misaligned. This is not an issue of conceptualization. It is one of political will. All the changes that Doris is referring to happened before the boomers took power. And I fear nothing of serious significance will change until they are mostly dead.

Should just make it illegal to buy a political ad on a media page -- and define political as specifically designed to promote a person seeking a political office or driving a political cause/party platform. It's the fact that corporations can make money by promoting political content that has driven this insane world. We can't just "stop doing it", as much as I wish we could. We need to give corporations a reason to stop delivering this information. News media, online media, etc. If people want to produce political ads, they should maintain their own website and promote it themselves, rather than having it promoted for them via ad buys on social media networks and news media networks.

This conversation like many I keep seeing/hearing is literally EXACTLY the stuff I’ve been hearing from Kennedy. When he announced his Independent move in Philly last year, he brought up these exact subjects. He even said what Eugene just said about how politicians feel & talk behind closed doors. Why the feck don’t people take him more seriously? Are we really so narrow minded that disagreeing with his stances on issues like vaccines eliminates all his credibility? Seriously. There are way more immediate & serious stances where the Dems & GOP are completely off base. I just don’t understand how people can’t get past the one or two “crazy” positions he may have when literally 80-90% of what he’s proposing is what everyone else says the Dems & GOP are not doing right. It’s literally insane to not take him seriously after all the times what he says has been proven correct.
