This is a video of my training from class yesterday, I talk over some of my favorite sequences from the day. Learning by watching video has always been a huge part of my learning process. hopefully talking over my training helps give you insight to things you could add into your game.

I greatly appreciate the editing on this--especially slowing down key segments instead of waiting for the narrator to rewind.

dude, using that deep, cross-collar, underhand grip to prevent them from coming up for the single is a fantastic detail!

Really cool video. The slowing down at key moments was great. Id love more of these in the future. Also very helpful to see moves at live pace so its not always the crisp drill like technique but the actual way it would be in a roll.

That reset forcing the training partner flat to his back from failed knee cut and going back to knee cut with knee high and cross collar grip (making him face away) looks beautiful. I am definitely doing that way too rarely but next time I am sure to try that reset at least. Thanks for all you do!

Yeah that face crank model is amazing, the centering mechanic is essential for a good knee cut too.

It’s the biggest untapped resource in jiu jitsu evolution, watching 30 min a day over a year will make a 5x fold in how much you improve I think

Great rolls, very technical; + very instructive as a white belt I try to understand every sequences (some looks advanced). You are in Sweden, maybe worth the visit to improve open guard and make some tourism there ;-) (note not only open guard of course !)

Thanks for this. Nice work by your training partners too. It's a great benefit to be able to hear what you are thinking "in a live roll", especially when you have to adjust and go for something new when they defend or a manoeuvre doesn't work for you. Also great to see little defence adjustment I would miss. Appreciate this type of video; laughed you getting the Matrix grab in there as well 👌
@JonThomasBJJ

Yeah live rolling so so useful, you get better at jiu jitsu when your subconscious responses improve. That comes from rolling your self but also watching others. So maximizing your watching time will help a lot.

That bolo/crab ride sequence is incredible hahaha. Youre so comfortable in that position, repummelling your legs to nsvigste and the other side. Need to rewatch the Espen video about 30 more times. Do you have any neck issues stemming from your inversion heavy game? I like to invert and have some worries. I've never like badly injured my neck but often it's sore post training.
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 3 года назад
I usually stay on one side of the shoulder or the other I don’t chill on my neck, so it doesn’t bother my neck much. Espen helped me a ton learning the sequences you also have to trust your instincts a little bit in these positions because sometimes it’s so overwhelming to comprehend you need to move a lot in the position to kind of explore options.

Great content as always!👍 Question: is there a good way to prevent the knee cut? I see all of you use it alot and I always get passed in training by people with a good knee cut. It’s frustrating as hell!😄

Jon, love your stuff per usual...when are you coming to Philadelphia? During your triangle attempt from lasso, any particular reason you bailed on the triangle to go for the matrix or was it just to practice working the matrix sequence? I’ve been working on matrix, x-hook from berimbolo, collar sleeve lately as well and have been hyper focused on getting here during rolls. Thanks
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 3 года назад
It was more because I just wanted to go for the matrix to get it on video but realistically if I wanted to finish the triangle I would have pushed his arm across body fast and dropped my hips.

thanks for another helpful video. you have asked for requests: one response to a bolo/matrix/crab-ride style of attack is to spam toe holds and knee bars. even if they are low-percentage they do side-track my game. you mentioned not allowing one of your legs to get stuck b/w your opponent's. any other advice on avoiding those dangers? countering?
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 3 года назад
Yeah I can do a video on that for sure, or try to include a sparring clip where that happens and narrate over what happens.

That matrix variation that he prefers, coming up on his shoulder, is perfect for using to hit the backside 50/50 entry for the heel hook.

Wondering what your thoughts are on the deep lasso + de la riva sweep? I feel like I see the opportunity come up a lot but rarely see anyone take it.

@JonThomasBJJ

I can do that too for sure I’ll see how it works wearing the mic while training. Some sequences and thoughts are so fast it’s hard to explain them live I imagine. Usually attack windows open so fast you have to use instantly

Looks like you're trying to kill as much as possible. Is there any value to do your A-moves a little slower to allow your partner to better defend? Or do you think I should just finish the move as fast as I can?
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 3 года назад
I’m actually going pretty light in these sequences, I think there is value in slower training but also you need to test things with full resistance otherwise you get false positives on what actually work.
