He made it look so easy too. Such a fluid triple jumper. When other great triple jump athletes do it it looks so choppy, so focused on power and muscles, but Jonathan just.. glides in strides. Technical perfection.

I was born in 1968. When I grew up everyone treated Bob beamon's long jump record as a freak that would take a long time to be beaten. And it was achieved in the thin air of Mexico City. It lasted 23 years. And here we are with edwards' record, achieved not at altitude, still standing after 27 years. Phenomenal.

A quarter of a century later and this record still stands. For perspective, Bob Beamon's insane long jump record at the 1968 Olympics, which was undoubtedly aided by the altitude, stood for 23 years before it was broken by Mike Powell. Powell's records has stood ever since (29 years). Edwards's record here is very impressive.

I'd describe myself as a sports fanatic. Travelled to champions league finals, rugby world cups, golf the open champs, seen ronnie osullivan in full flow. But the thing about athletics that really captures my imagination is that it's pure sport, man against man, simply body against body the best is a perfect specimen. And Edward's record jump was and is still my favourite sporting moment. And to think he even jumped 18.43 but wind was illegal. Remember hearing rumours at the time, that in the gym, Edward's was leg lifting about 40lbs more than the best sprinters of the era. He looked so normal, average but was anything but.
