For those thinking Jonathan passed on the 20th of April, it was actually the 14th, or the night/of Friday the 13th and early morning hours of the 14th of April. This of course brings speculation about the supernatural, but he was just a man who played a role. May he rest in peace, and so thankful for the years of entertainment he brought to us. :)
Beth Virginia Phillips: Me too...I’d come home from school; flicked on the tube and boom, there was the very 1st episode and I was hooked! All us kids were addicted...
I'M so emotional😭😪 right now. My Paternal grandmother and I used to watch this show together. RIP in peace Grandma and thank you for being such a good sport.
Donya, I am so sorry, I understand how you feel , I was in Middle School when D.S . came on , School didn't let out until 3 :50 , and D. S. was on at 3:00 here in Dallas , I would have my Mother watch it and the first thing I would say when I got in the car after School was " What happened on Dark Shadows " ? It was so happy when Summer came and Chrustmas Vacation so I could watch it every day , My Mother passed away in 2017 at the age of 94 , Now I watch it every night on Decades TV channel. ❤❤
Kathryn Leigh Scott, as Maggie Evans, was always the pretty one. In this video, from 1986, she was beautiful. And today, in 2022, she is still beautiful!
LOVED Dark Shadows One of my fav show of all time! Fun seeing Kathryn Leigh Scott and Jonathan Frid as "themselves" many years after the show aired. Lovely people as well as fine actors. Nice to seee Lloyd Bridges--always liked him too! Thanks so much for sharing!!!1
In addition to everything else, "Dark Shadows" had some extremely beautiful women in the cast -- such as Kate Jackson, Lara Parker and Alexandra Moltke -- but as a 13-year-old boy, I could never take my eyes off of Nancy Barrett and Katherine Leigh Scott. And they're still beautiful.
I'm rewatching the episodes refered to as The Beginning (pre- Barnabas) remembering why I fell in love with this show. This was a great interview. Love seeing Lloyd Bridges too. Sea Hunt was another great show.
I recall an interview that Lara Parker did when the show was in something like it's 2nd or 3rd year. She was making the tour of a lot of stations around the country that played Dark Shadows. She said that those who weren't in the scene would be off camera always doing things to try to make those on camera flub their lines. She also said that they'd do things that would kind of mess up the scene. I recall one scene where there was a fight at the Blue Whale bar. One actor was to pick up a chair and hit it on a table breaking it. Well, the break-away chair was taken away and a real chair was put in its place. The looks of surprise on both faces of the actors was priceless. Dark Shadows is playing 5 nights a week on Decades, and over-the-air TV station.
I was a HUGE, "Dark Shadows'" Fan. Johnathan Frid," an awesome Actor. Lara Parker, Awesome Actress!!! I Remember, almost everything, from "Dark Shadows" Show!!! I hadn't seen the Parts, where "Barnabbas, Prison Maggie Evans." I can hardly remember, that parts. The lady plays, "Maggie, Josette," did an AWESOME job acting. Lara Parker, & Katherine Leigh Scott, Beautiful ladies!!!
I would have liked to have seen Barnabas and Vicki together as a couple though many many fans wanted to see him end up with Julia instead. Dont forget that Barnabas 'forced' himself on Maggie, she did not love him. Barnabas when he was first on the show and evil, he kidnapped Maggie and he both mentally and physically abused her. That's not love.
@@thejupiter2574 Yes and in those days the show was scheduled to be canceled so the plan was for EVIL Barnabas to be staked by Doctor Woodard -- end of show. Then the show got renewed -- what to do? Barnabas became the first (as far as I'm aware of) sympathetic vampire and he would no more hurt Maggie than burn down The Old House.
@@thejupiter2574 ....Victoria Wine ers was Never in love with Barnabas. She was in love with Burke Devlin and, then, Peter Bradford. BARNABAS never stood a chance with Maggie or Vicki. However..his True Love, JOSETTE, loved him. Angelique..just wanted to dominate & control him. JOSETTE or Julia Hoffman..were his best matches.
@@FilPol-yu1es OK. Josette. I just think that these two actors had chemistry. The same actress, KLS, played Josette. In fact, Barnabas rescued Maggie from John Yaeger. And do you remember when Barnabas gave Maggie a ring but Angelique put the pitchfork on Maggie's hand and Quentin's hand (like she did to Josette and Jeremiah) and Maggie and Quentin started kissing and Maggie through the ring Barnabas gave her into the fireplace?
Such a romantic show. I just learned Jonathan Frid passed on April 20. 2012. I will always remember that date. He was a fantastic actor; gave rivetting performances. Put me in a trance many a time! Touched my young soul wth the delivery of his lines and the writers were fantastic! I haven't seen the new movie but, from the trailors to it I am dissapointed and feel they made a mockery of what they could have done sweet justice. Not too surprised with the people involved. Must have hurt him. :(
Mr. Frid said he could not careless about who played his role after him nor about a Dark Shadows remake. He never saw the Burton movie and just did not care. He was to old with health problems . He died before the movie came out. The Burton movie was not meant to be taken seriously at all . It was made as a 'parody' of the TV show not a remake and not a reboot. Frid said he was not emotionally attached to the Barnabas character.
I watched Dark Shadows as a 2nd grader in 1968 with my mom. It terrified, mystified and mesmerized me. I loved Barnabas and Quentin. Am now binge-watching the entire series on Tubi and am having a blast hating Angelique! Jonathan Frid was simply stellar in the role. I’m so thankful to be able to see it again 53 years later through adult eyes.
I watched the rerun of Dark Shadows because I was very young when it started. My favorite show ever. What a beautiful voice Jonathan Frid had. All of the actors were outstanding.
Thank you for posting this clip, TheLizaWorld. I remember how excited all the DS community was when we heard it was coming on. Anything on DS back then was extremely rare, so it was delightful to see 3 iconic stars from the series in real time.
Used to run home from work turn on the TV and immerse myself into Dark Shadows always a vampire fan Jonathan Frid was just extraordinary thanks for this most enjoyable Quest
And look at what a perfect gentleman with beautiful manners & a kind hearted soul is dear Johnathan! He never interrupted her or felt a need for showboating. You can tell he's a good guy.
You know, honestly, it's absolutely futile to put the character "Roger Collins" in a movie, and not have him played by Louis Edmonds!!! Yes, yes, I know Louie's dead. But neither the 1991 mini-series, nor the 2012 movie came close to doing Roger Collins justice. Like "Sean Connery IS James Bond" -- "Louie Edmonds IS Roger Collins."
He died in the early hours of April 14.Some thought he died on Fri the 13 th.KLS posted on her web site that Jonathan died from complications of a fall.
JF’s nephew dispelled the F/13 date of death. He said it made for good copy but simply wasn’t true. Don Briscoe, who played Chris Jennings, Tim Shaw, et al. actually did pass on Halloween of 2004.
I was one of the first wave DS fans and I didn’t believe the balloon juice about viewership tanking as the cause of the show’s cancellation; still don’t! We were kids who did have some power of the pocketbook but not enough to keep ABC happy. Having said that, I’ll also add that any attempts to try at a revival of the show are hopelessly doomed to failure. The original version had an ensemble of die hard thespians and staffers who gave it their all for an innovative series while lifting ideas from the classics- Poe, Lovecraft, Wilde, etc. All involved would have done it for nickels and considered themselves well compensated. Everything they did to promote the show sparkled with the graciousness of dedicated professionalism. On a personal note- those same actors made me a much better student. Damned if I was going to crap out my schoolwork and wind up being kept after the last bell. I had to jet out and make it inside and fanny to the floor in front of the TV by 4 PM.
Kathryn Leigh Scott is a very fine actress, but I find her a bit overbearing. She tends to take over the interviews and use the limited airtime to plug her books, when she should be sharing that time with her fellow DS actors. Otherwise, she seems to be a very nice lady who obviously cherished her DS years. Jonathan Frid was such a complex, witty, eloquent, beguiling and phenomenally gifted actor. He had it all - beautifully expressive eyes, chiseled cheekbones, that mesmerizing, rich and sensuous voice. He was a Class Act, so "old world" polite, gracious and humble. He would sit quietly and respectfully, interview after interview, looking slightly bemused while "Katy" did her shtick and tried to sell her latest book. 🙄😄 I've watched many of Frid's solo interviews and find him SO fascinating, but there's an undercurrent of melancholy and loneliness, especially in his later interviews. He seemed resigned to the single life. Perhaps Frid felt it best to stay under the radar during his Dark Shadows fame. It WAS the 60's and being gay was still illegal. I do think he was a very private man who preferred a quiet lifestyle and enjoyed quiet pursuits - reading, cooking, listening to music, gardening. He described himself as a "happy loner." (I GET it because I'm one as well.) I also think he was completely devoted to his craft, just really, REALLY loved it. He said his "most content years" were traveling to various towns and cities doing his one-man shows - "Fools and Fiends", etc. It was certainly a much saner pace than his prior DS days, no pages and pages of dialogue to memorize daily. When Frid wasn't on-the-road, he loved "just being at home" and gardening. He was a "treehugger" and very proud of the beautiful maple tree behind his house in Ancaster, Ontario. In a DS documentary on the grounds of Seaview Terrace where they did the exterior shots for "Collinwood", Jonathan momentarily stopped to point at and comment TWICE on the beauty of a magnificent, ancient oak tree. 😪 (We have such an oak in our backyard in GA and it takes my breath away. It's over 100 ft. tall and must be at least 200 years old.) It touched my heart when Jonathan stopped to comment on the beauty of that tree. In an interview in later years, he said David Selby called him out of the blue to get together, but he wasn't up for it. Although he enjoyed seeing former DS castmates, he told David that he pretty much "lived in his robe" - and was "actually wearing it at this moment!" 😄 He told David he "didn't get out much these days." I read that he ate his meals everyday at the nearby Sammy's Family Bar and Grill in Ancaster. He liked the warm, cozy casual ambience - and anonymity. The staff there said Jonathan would come through the door, doing his little jig and waving his wolfshead cane in the air! 🤣 He didn't want - or expect - "any fuss" and would just give a little wave or nod if someone recognized him. He was confident in his acting abilities (RADA London, Yale), but the humblest of artists. Sammy's held a little wake for their most loyal customer, at the restaurant, a few days after he died - "no fuss", just the way Jonathan would have liked it. At his request, there was no funeral. RIP Jonathan. We still love and will always miss you. 🧛♂️🦇🖤
@Marilyn Willett I agree! Kathryn Leigh Scott had a tendency to take over these interviews to plug her latest book or act as "Dark Shadows historian." Sure, she has a lot of knowledge because she was there, but let your castmates talk. Without Jonathan Frid, her career at Dark Shadows would have been over in a year! I think Jonathan Frid was very tolerant and gracious in these moments. Frid was a Class Act! 🙄
I just found this post about Jonathan Frid from a large Facebook Grp >>>>> "" Mr. Frid was a proud Canadian. When he retired he moved back to Ontario Canada where he had family and many friends. Jonathan Frid never married ( obviously ) and he never had any children. However, he was survived by his beloved cousins and his brother's children, and by his Grand niece and nephews who loved and adored him. They called him 'Uncle John'. He was dearly loved. Mr. Frid was not a religious man so there was no ceremony after he died. He never liked to be fussed over and he did not want a funeral nor a memorial. He preferred to be remembered alive and enjoying life. Mr. Frid did not want a final resting place in fear of the many obsessive fans he had who would seek out the grave of 'Barnabas Collins' and set up memorials and write graffiti about his character. He didn't want fans to put him up on a pedestal like a movie idol. He never wanted that kind of attention. Jonathan Frid said that many fans had trouble separating him, the actor from the character he had played. Fans would address him as Barnabas instead of his real name and they'd ask him a lot of 'vampire' related questions. He did not want those kinds of obsessive fans to bother his relatives . Mr. Frid would often say that he was nothing like his Barnabas character. He also stated several times that he would like to be remembered for more than just his work on Dark Shadows. He had twenty years of acting experience before he even appeared on the TV show and several years of doing dramatic readings in his reader's theater and in his one-man shows and his tour with the play, Arsenic and Old Lace with actors Marion Ross, Jean Stapleton and Larry Storch. Mr. Jonathan Frid was so much more than just his Barnabas character. R I P .""
Just watched the episode where Barnabas tells Angelique that he loved her, then she gets killed by Trask. I was disappointed that she just didn't go forward in time with Barnabas. Since they were ending his character, they should of ended him living happily ever after. He sort of did having his curse end, but they should have ended him not being lonely any longer either.
+Yvonne Dunn I was 16 years old when that episode played, a Friday in late autumn, already dark by 4:30, and I cried. Angelique finally understood that love was not possession, did the selfless thing and made herself worthy. I never loved her more. At the same time, Trask earned unending hate.
At first, I had a difficult time understanding as to how Barnabas could forgive Angelique after she "caused" the deaths of Jeremiah, Sarah, Josette and Naomi. But then I realized that Barnabas did not have to shoot and kill Jeremiah, that Sarah got lost in the storm and developed pneumonia on her own, and that Josette and Naomi chose to take their own lives. Again, I am not exonerating Angelique one bit, but there is always the issue of free will in these situations.
Barnabas wasn’t exactly Pope John Paul II himself, what with his absolutely horrific treatment of Maggie Evans, murdering the beloved Dr. Dave Woodard, putting the bite on both Carolyn Stoddard and Vicky Winters, indirectly causing Sam Evans to go blind and then Sam getting killed by Adam, and then deciding that Maggie Evans would be the perfect candidate to be the “life-force” for the over-sexed Adam’s mate. Yeah, as if Barnabas hadn’t done enough rotten things to Maggie and her late father already. I don’t understand how Dr. Julia Hoffman could be so attracted to such an ogre of a man.
Really? I'd have sworn I read an interview with him where he talked about how appropriate it was to use a fake English accent for Barnabas, since Barnabas himself was only pretending to be from England.
Nope that was discussed at a convention. Frid did not try to use any kind of an accent and he was never instructed to do so. He spoke very elegantly and with proper diction which made his speech stand out . He was a classically trained actor which meant he trained how he spoke and pronounced words.
johonatan fred fue un cator con pocas peliculas realizada y logra escalar en la mente de tanta gente que al igual que yo disfrutamos de su serie barnaba colling , pocos actores logra lo que el logro.
what is this book Jonathan Frid is talking about he done? I never ever heard about it and I am a DS fan can some one help me out on this I even done a search on it found not a thing. thanks all.
Maybe Barnabas was taking a lot of Avodart, while he was locked up in that coffin for several weeks? And, I shudder to think how Barnabas “coped” with being locked up in that coffin from 1797 all the way to 1967! After biting Willie Loomis on the wrist, Barnabas must have hurried out of the secret room in the Collins Family Mausoleum to just make it in time to the nearest tree. Yes, relief after 170 long years!
It's still not cooperating, so I'll try it this way. Go to the site for Emmy TV Legends, then go to "People," and find Jonathan Frid. That should take you to the video. He talks about the accent at about 12:38 (and there's a link to that part of the video directly in the "highlights" section).
Wow! Kathryn Leigh Scott did all the talking. All Jonathan Frid did was sit there and say a few words. He couldn't get a word in edgewise. Chatty Kathryn..lol
I was on the verge of turing 2 years old when this came on the air. Heh, watching the old DS episodes, I always found KLS to be very attractive. This definitely puts a little rain clouds on my parade. Ah, age. There is no escaping her.
KLS’ first book, “My Scrapbook Memories of Dark Shadows” is very good. She wrote about growing up in Minnesota, coming to NYC to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, working as a Bunny st the. Playboy Club and landing the part of Maggie Evans on “Dark Shadows.” There are many behind-the-scenes photographs at the DS studio, taken by KLS’ then-husband, Time Magazine photographer Ben Martin. I think it’s KLS’ best DS book.
Well by this time of the interview, Ms. Bennett was very much older or elderly. She would not have been up to the trip and all that it would entail just to appear in this short interview. Also Ms. Bennett could not recall a whole lot about the show when she had appeared at a Dark Shadows convention in her older age.
@Philip Monihan He was on Dark Shadows two different times, brief role as a Silver smith Ezra Braithwaite. His character created the silver Pentagram against Werewolves. Abe also appeared in the same TV made movie that Jonathan Frid appeared in called The Devil's Daughter TV movie
Was lloyd supposed to be a guest or a co-host? Either way, he talked too much!!! It was hard enought to get Jonathan on there in the first place!!! geez.....
It's interesting to see Jonathan Frid with a soft full head of hair in place of his Barnabas craggly hairdo. But it occurs to me that this way he somewhat resembles the British actor/comedian Rowan Atkinson!
No, I like Barnabas' vampire hair style, it was very becomming on HIS FACE. Thin face, beautiful eyes, roman nose, his real hair was nice but not special.
Has anyone ever seen the interview...I want to say it came out in the late 80's or around the time of the revival series, Jonathan Frid and I think Kathryn Leigh Scott and Lara Parker (or maybe Nancy Barrett) were being interviewed, and the interviewer said something very dismissive about the 'Dark Shadows' franchise that it offended Jonathan Frid and he didn't answer any more questions for the remainder of the segment.
I remember that segment. I cannot be certain, but I think Gary Collins was the interviewer. And yes, it was Lara Parker. Among all the cast members, the three closest in terms of friendship were Jonathan, Katherine and Lara. Katherine and Lara actually do not live far from each other.
My attempts to post the interview link on your channel seem to have resulted in my comments vanishing, so if it never made it to you, I'll try again tomorrow. xD

It was interesting to see how many of the male actors in Dark Shadows were gay, and this was at a time when tolerance levels in television were quite low. It was widely acknowledged that Jonathan Frid was closeted, but Louis Edmonds (Roger Collins) openly lived with a partner while hosting lavish dinner parties at their home on Long Island. Joel Crothers (Joe Haskell) and a couple of other actors were also gay, and one of them succumbed to AIDS. This is another way DS was a groundbreaking show.
yes it was already established in fandom decades ago that Mr Frid was gay but no one could come out back then. He did not want to go through the crap from religious fans that poor Louis Edmonds had to deal with for being gay. Yes Mr. Crothers was gay, closeted as actors had to be back in the day and no he was not married.
@@marilynwillett804 At three different DS conventions Louis Edmonds talked with his fans and shared stories at his autograph table. Edmonds was not in the closet and he told us several stories about the many socially ignorant and rude, Homophobic and religiously bigoted soap opera fans that he, Edmonds had to put up with from people who did not approve of his sexual orientation. Later on at another convention Frid told a small group of us that what happened to Edmonds was one of the reasons that he, Frid did not 'officially' come out to all of his 'straight' fans was because he, Frid did not want his family bothered by the type of hateful fans that Edmonds had enncountered. Frid wanted no part of that. Sorry you weren't there but because you were not does not make me a liar.
@@thejupiter2574. At one time Edmonds disgraced himself in public at which point Frid left the place and din't speak to him for a long time. Edmonds was flamboyant but Frid was wise enough to be reserved. I like Frid the actor who portrayed Barnabas but I can separate the two, I am not obligated to approve of his personal life. I live by my own convictions.
I had the same reaction, then remembered that there was a short segment in the 1600s that showed the origin of the Collins curse during a witch trial, at which Angelique was present as a woman named Miranda. She didn't do the cursing, btw. The Collins ancestor was played by Louis Edmonds.
You think KLS is verbose; you should have seen actress Shelly Winters on some of the old talk shows. More recently, actress Saoirse Ronan likes to engage in conversations. Of course, being raised in Ireland, the talented and beautiful Ms. Ronan has the famous “Irish gift for the gab.”
To bad Johnathan was type cast mostly in horror roles I suspect since he was such a good actor studios were afraid his popularity and quality acting would hurt their main line actors.
I realize your comment is pretty old, but I just had to reply because I so agree with you. She's always been like that. She never shuts up. Every single interview with her is like that. Someone always comments on it because she's so obnoxious.
