Jonathan Frid's archetypal vampire character, Barnabas Collins, has been described as the "reluctant vampire," "vulnerable vampire," and "sympathetic vampire." He is the first vampire with a conscience, the first to experience inner conflict and self-loathing about his condition and his consequent actions, a vampire with a tortured soul, with a heart that is more human than monstrous.
"O'er mine own misery and thy vain revenge.-
Three thousand years of sleep-unsheltered hours
And moments-aye divided by keen pangs
Till they seemed years, torture and solitude,
Scorn and despair,-these are mine empire:-"
From "Prometheus Unbound" by Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792--1822)
