Jokes aside though, I like how this version of Jonathan honestly looks like a father you can go up to & just tell he's a good man. While that might sound weird to some it's how I felt seeing the image of him.

Boba, I love when you read that scene from FOR ALL SEASONS. What a fine, fine thing to say about the kind of scenes you want to see in the film. I want those scenes, too. They define Superman. No one knew Burt Young before Rocky and, in many ways, he was, as Apollo Creed/ the late great Carl Weathers said, "the heart and soul of the film," the real everyman. When you select scenes from Superman comics, you do a fine job.

I've wanted a Pa Kent surviving to Clark becoming Superman in the movies (like he was for much of post-Crisis) for decades, it's maddening that the only live action version we have that's done it is Lois and Clark.

The castings also remind me a lot of Martha and Jonathan in “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman”, which I think is great. And I’m with you Boba, Jonathan should absolutely be alive. This all powerful being needing the counsel and guidance of his wise human father is way more valuable to the character than the lesson of his death. I’m sick of Jonathan being killed in live action when he can add so much by being present in Clark’s life. He’s been alive in the comics for decades.

Superman's parents are alive & well in the comics. Donner just killed Jonathan off to give Superman something to struggle with, for whatever reason🤷🏼‍♂️ That always made Reeves Superman feel like a loner in the world. I prefer them being alive and offering advice to Clark whenever he needs it, like in The Adventures of Lois & Clark with Dean Cain & Teri Hatcher❤

I could be wrong, but I do remember Gunn explaining that for the Superman movie that the castings were done through auditions instead of just regularly offering roles. I don’t know if that applied to ALL characters or just the main ones, but if the former is true? Gunn really did get to SEE how Pruitt Taylor performed as Jonathan and picked him because he saw the vision. Same could be said for Martha likely.

I'll admit, I was initially surprised and judgmental about his looks. Then I realize how it makes sense for a regular (not hollywood-level attractive) person to play the role, and how shallow I was for caring so much about appearance.

Between this and “My Adventures With Superman” (which has a Martha who is quite pudgy, but in a sweet motherly way) I think the idea of the Kent parents not being Hollywood-attractive is actually an appealing thing… Considering it accentuates where Clark’s humility and steady-footed compassion comes from; he’s not a good person because he’s conventionally-handsome, it’s because these kind people taught him the value of empathy and equity among all people. And he carries that into his Superman persona, when he could otherwise have been arrogant and narcissistic.

1. John Kent isn't related to Clark biologically so it doesn't matter how he looks, any older actor can play the role. 2. The people that think John has to die so Clark can learn that he can't save everyone are ignorant and probably only familiar with Zack Snyder's Superman or Richard Donner's Superman. John Kent was alive during the entirety of the DCAU, with some great moments in Justice League Unlimited and he's alive in the comics right now.

Having larger star power can bring in a wider audience, especially those who may not necessarily be familiar with the source material. However, well-known actors can also be a detriment to the overall plot, by being a distraction from the character they may be portraying. A lesser-known actor who can truly personify the character can get an audience more invested in the movie, bringing a more genuine connection to the character being portrayed.

I really hope they keep Johnathan alive, not just through this movie but at least for a while in the DCU. Outside of Smallville, it seems like we always have Johnathan gone before Clark becomes Superman in live action and I hope this is the first time they go in the other direction with him. He lived in the Bruce Timm DCAU and in different iterations of the comics, let's get him long term in live action as well. Johnathan Kent is not Ben Parker folks.

I think the ppl who didn't want Jonathan to be alive in this movie are ppl who didn't want to enjoy a good performance, who didn't want to grow to love the character as seen in the movie because they know he has to die at some point and that death is only gonna pack more of a punch if they spend time with the character. I think the "pls don't let Pa Kent be alive" trend is less about skipping integral story beats and more "I don't wanna feel sad when he dies on screen"

We all have our expectations; however, this actor is quite brilliant in many roles! interesting...the script will say it all...this casting of Pruit Taylor VInce is spot on when you think of farmers in general, he's old but not too old, he's heavy set but not obese, he's a good actor not a top star...James is brilliant and this movie will be knocked out of the park!
