I’m an exemplar of this. I was an atheist - even a militant anti theist at times - for all of my adult life. I now believe in god, and it’s largely because of you, Jonathan, Jordan and Joscha Bach, whom I would love for you to talk to.

Hi!!! Congratulations on your discoveries and growth in your faith. I am also beginning my walk with Jesus Christ very recently. I have a dear friend who has been struggling with these issues and constantly wants to stir up conversation around the subject of Christianity. He also is a well educated militant anti theist but clearly his desire to speak about the subject of God is telling as to his desire for relationship with the Lord. He often speaks about evolution disproving creationism and how miracles are found all over different religions. Would you be so kind to assist me in which direction I could potentially walk with him?
@fbwthe6
@fbwthe6 8 месяцев назад
@@JayJay2510_ interesting. Ultimately it’s going to have to come from within your friend, as I’m sure you know. Until then, show your friend compassion, respect and patience as he navigates the complicated world. For me, one thing that made me pull away from atheism was that science doesn’t attempt to answer the question “how do I live a good life.” That question is relegated to philosophy, ethics and morality, which each are informed by science, but go beyond science in order to come to meaningful conclusions. The phrase “god is the end of inquiry” really startled me into realizing that all the answers to the questions that science is asked never satisfied me fully. Where did we come from, how does the universe work, why do we age, and how did we get here? Those questions can be asked of science and perhaps even in every case science can produce some kind of answer, but so far those answers have not fulfilled me. Only something like god can do that, as far as I can tell. I am not a christian. At least not yet. I don’t believe the things that qualify me to be a christian, but I believe in the power of the Bible as a symbol, which means I believe in the value of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ as a symbol. Does that make me a christian? I don’t think most Christians would say it does, but it brings me a lot of meaning. You may want to start with your friend by considering the value of the ancient texts - including the Bible, Sanskrit texts, cuneiform texts, and other ancient creation myths etched into stone - from the perspective of early attempts at philosophy. They represent the thousands of years that humans have struggled with these concepts. They’re not just propaganda. We aren’t that sophisticated. Certainly they have been co-opted, abused and misused by corrupt people, but when you read the raw texts, it’s remarkable how relatable and relevant the stories are. And how similar! That’s the best I can tell you. As an atheist, beginning to believe is such a massive step in a new direction that it takes time to get used to yourself. Allow your friend time to realize that his pursuits will not yield the fruits that he’s looking for.

I'm terribly curious: How did Joscha Bach contribute to this conversion of yours? I hadn't heard of him but when I saw your post I looked him up and he may be one of the most materialist (in the philosophical sense) men I've come across in a long time. So I don't understand how he could facilitate a person's conversion to theism. But maybe I haven't watched enough of him.

"Now what?" is exactly what leads to the infinite. We genuinely have an infinite hole in our hearts. We could cure all disease and achieve low cost immortality in this life, and the question would still be "Now what?" We could search every planet in the entire universe, and it would become dull quickly. The question would immediately become, "Now what?" What we truly want is God. God is at the bottom of every desire.

One of the first things I remember from JBP was that we create games to play, even from an early age. And the best game is the one with the best rules that allow for repeatable, continuable playability.... Something like that. And when you look at the bible, you realize the rules set before us by it, allow for the most continuous, repeatable playable game.. so called "Life."

Very good point! For some of those intellectually inclined like myself, we've noticed the limitations of the materialistic view of the universe, and the hysteric attempts of denial of internal spiritual processes that can't be explained by a purely mechanistic process. This is very evident in some individuals who declare themselves as Marxists but have embraced religion to cover that empty corner of their soul. I believe they fail, as I do and many religious persons, to hold religion as a mind frame, and not as a mere recipe of compliance.

Once Peterson arrived on the scene, the athiests were forced to question if they actually knew what they were talking about. Petersons method of interpretation made it clear to everyone that the Bible isn't written like a textbook and can't be read as such. That realisation, at least for me, called into question my belief that I knew anything at all and that knowing that E=MC2 in no way made me smarter or more knowledgeable than my ancestors

If he is talking about perception, his own penny hasnt dropped yet. He also doesn't know that, what's good for the goose is good for the gander, Peterson been the gander of course.😢

He has found a way to communicate these ideas in such a way that someone who is lost in materialism can find them acceptable. For me, he acted as a bridge. I consider myself as one of those atheists that have been affected by this new landscape. Atheism is a very narrow response to a very narrow interpretation of religion. The new atheist movement wasnt incorrect generally speaking.. its just that its not really a worldview at all. Its just an answer to the position whether or not god literally exists. So after the new atheist movement, we are still left with the need for a fully coherent worldview. So it makes sense that philosophy is now finding a way to find commonground between secularism and religion. Neoplatonism might be that answer..
