one of the best parts of speaking another language without looking like you speak it, is people could be bad mouthing behind your back but you spin round and whip out the old *i actually speak this language and could understand what you were saying*

It's a figure of speech that is common in a certain place and time. Like "raining cats and dogs" or "jumped the shark". Since the meaning isn't literal it could be confusing to foreigners or people of a different generation.
