The written version, with ingredients, of the silky-smooth DIY air dry clay recipe can be found on my blog at www.ultimatepa...
We can only use DAP or Wurth joint compound with this recipe. if we change the glue to Gorilla Wood Glue instead of Elmers. See this video: • Video
I created the recipe to make my baby animal dolls, but since then people have discovered that's it's great to use as the last layer on a paper mache sculpture. Some people use a layer of paper strips and paste under it, while others use the original paper mache clay and then a thin layer of this recipe to make the sculpture really smooth. I've also used it for portrait masks, a rhino, a raven, and many other projects.

Yes, you can paint the dried clay. I use acrylics. You'll want to seal your final work with a good acrylic varnish.

Great! I'm really excited about how well the clay works in molds, but I haven't had time to play with it in molds yet. This is really good to know.

THIS VIDEO IS SO WONDERFUL and TIMELY! 40 some-odd years ago my little sister sent me a precious piggy bank that she made by using a balloon and paper mache. Fast-forward to a conversation I had earlier this week with one of my granddaughters who I asked to save all of the newspapers she could find so that we could try to make her a piggy bank. Thank you soooooo much! I subscribed!

I've been looking all over for recipes for homemade air dry clay and this is the best I've found. I have yet to try it out but you're literally the only person who took the time to make instructions so detailed and easy to follow, while also really knowing what you're doing. In most tutorials I've found people don't know what is the purpose of each ingredient and therefore always just wing the whole thing ;) So, big big thanks to you for taking the time to share the knowledge! Also, since I have yet to try this mix, can you estimate how much shrinkage there is when it dries? Obviously I'm not looking for an exact percentage but it would help a lot to know what to expect as I'm a doll maker and how much a clay shrinks is probably the most critical part of my work. Thank you~!
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 10 лет назад
EratoTiaTuatha I'm glad you like the recipe. I haven't tested the shrinkage, because I like to make my doll heads over a sock filled with rice. Then I use one layer of plaster of Paris bandages, to give myself a solid base, and add a thin layer of the air dry clay over that. The doll heads are very strong and light, and any shrinkage cracks are easy to fix. Since you probably have a very different method, you would want to mix up a small batch and do a scientific-type test. It shouldn't take long to find out if the recipe will work for you. Let us know what you find out in your experiment!

Ultimate Paper Mache I just made the clay (finally! Took me a while ^^;) So far I can tell the recipe is perfect, probably first time making clay that I had everything come out exactly like in the video! I love the texture and it's really nice to sculpt with. I'll be letting you know how much it shrinks once I get some pieces dry, but first I have a question. Do you dry this clay in an oven to speed things up? If so, what time/temperature do you use? I'm a bit afraid how the starch would react to the heat... Again, big thanks for making this availble!

Just made my first batch according to this recipe! Didn't have dough hooks for mixer so hand-kneaded in the remaining flour like you suggested, used a dollar store cutting mat for this. Surprisingly easy and the clay looks great! Made some push mold faces & candy mold seashells so far. Took the faces out right away, left the shells in til they dry to see what happens! The faces are PERFECT! Hint: soak beaters & bowl in a dishpan to be dumped outside. This stuff probably clogs drains nicely lol

Ten years later, I just found this! Thank you for doing the gram measurements. You didn't mention it, but cup measures in the USA are smaller than Imperial cup measures. This is why so many recipes don't turn out perfectly for some people. I am in Canada, and have 2 sets of measuring cups & spoons (imperial and USA) and also use metric most of the time, as we are a "metric" country. It can get a bit confusing, as we need to be sure to know which systems we are using if we want 100% accuracy. Metric is universally the same, so that is the best measuring system to use when accuracy is important. My grandson, soon to be 8 years old, wants sculpting clay! He uses FIMO I think it is called, and makes beautiful and imaginative items with it, but is expensive. Your recipe is will work well for him at a price this granny can afford.

Yes, I use baby oil - the kind that's sold here is just mineral oil with some fragrance added. I think that it would take a very long time to dry if you didn't use an armature underneath. However, it might be an interesting experiment.

I don't think they sell joint compound in a tube here in the States, so I'm not sure. Make sure it's for drywall, not pipes. If it's pre-mixed, and it's for drywall, it should work just fine.

I have never used the stuff to make beads or buttons, but I can't imagine why it wouldn't work. They may not be as hard as you would like, so go ahead and test it and see what happens. The original paper mache clay recipe is harder when it dries, but it's much more difficult to sand.

I love your creations, they are so beautiful to look at. I made some air dry clay last week after following your instructions and it turned out okay, but i did not mix the paper enough so it turned out a little lumpy, but it still worked and i was able to smooth with some water and a spatula. I do wish the clay was waterproof though as i want to experiment with garden features. I am going to cover in a high coat of varnish to see if it will withstand the British weather! Thank you so much again.
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 3 года назад
Good luck with it. Most varnish is slightly permeable, perhaps to let the wood underneath breathe. It can also crack in the sun, but if you keep it protected it might last awhile. I don't use this recipe for yard art, because none of my waterproofing experiments worked. I don't know if it's been mentioned, but they make mixing paddles for hand drills. The higher torque motor of a drill vs a kitchen mixer might be more up to the task of mixing the clay. The paddles start at about $3.50, but like any mixer, there are different shapes for different jobs.
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 3 года назад
Great idea. I do use the paddle when I need to make a larger batch. If you double or triple the recipe you could wear out a kitchen mixer's motor, but a drill can usually handle it. Thanks for mentioning it! 😀

You might want to watch it, too. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YOiovGN-yHA.html I don't know if the air dry clay is frost proof, and I can't find out because it isn't waterproof. If I left it outside for a Minnesota winter, it would be a puddle of goo in the spring. Did you find a waterproof air dry clay for your fair houses? If you did, I'd love to know about it.

Do you mean you don't have any joint compound on hand, or do you mean you don't know what it's called in your country? If that's the problem, you might find out if you do a search on my blog for "what is joint compound called." A lot of people have written in from all over the world. As far as I know, there is no substitute for joint compound in this recipe. There are lots of other recipes for paper mache and air-dry clay, but this particular recipe needs the joint compound.
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 11 лет назад
Lately, some people have reported that Dap works just fine now. They may have changed their formula again. Go ahead and try it, and see if it works. The glue and joint compound combine to create an extremely strong mix - it's essentially a polymer (liquid plastic) glue with calcium carbonate added from the joint compound. I have never seen any other home-made mixture that creates a product as strong as the glue-joint compound combo.

Hi Barbara. I think some of these questions would need some experimentation, and you would be the perfect person to do them. The clay does shrink (anything that contains water will shrink when it dries) but I haven't measured exactly how much. It is not as hard as the original paper mache clay, which makes this new stuff easier to sand, but less strong. I used it for the tongue on my baby puppy dolls, extremely thin, and they're holding up just fine. But if I dropped one? It might break.

Great tutorial. I just wanted to add a comment. Many folks use paper mache for Halloween props, and one common problem for them is that, during storage, mice, rats, raccoon, squirrel and other rodents will eat their props (probably due to the flour content). An easy preventative measure against this is to add some ground cayenne pepper to your paper mache mix while you're making it. Rodents can't stand the taste and will avoid it at all costs.
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 8 лет назад
Great idea! I've never heard that one before, but it sounds like it would work exactly as you describe. Thanks for letting us know.
@JanineMKartist
@JanineMKartist 6 лет назад
But wouldn't the presence of the joint/drywall compound make it less attractive to rodents? Also could it be made more solid by increasing the amount of the joint compound or what about including some plaster in the mix? The rodent thing does worry me because when I did some paper mache about 15 years ago some of them did become a meal to mice when there was a brief mice issue.

Hello. Love you sharing this receipe. I used the other version of cold porcelain receipe ie without the paper towel. And i made small baskets using that receipe. Sometimes it turns out fine but most of the time, the baskets cracked so terribly upon drying that i had to throw them away. It was so disheartening. So i stopped making the baskets. The receipe is good for making flowers thou. I am so happy to tumble into yr utube and i am now very interrested to try yr receipe and try to make a basket that will not crack upon drying. I cannot wait to try yr receipe. Thank you from malaysia

Yes, it shrinks. I think the only kind that won't shrink is epoxy clay, but I could be wrong. I have never tried using it to repair anything, I just use it thinly over an armature. Occasionally, hairline cracks happen, but they're easy to repair. It's quite rare, though - did you use all the measurements in the video?

I love your videos! You are so talented! I was wondering, if the toilet paper weighs 24 grams before adding water and weighs 110 grams after adding water, would it be okay to just measure out the 24 grams of t.p. And add 86 grams (110 minus 24) of water to it? That way you wouldn’t have to waste any time and effort squeezing and weighing? And do these weights apply to your original clay recipe as well? Thank you, Jonni!

The joint compound is not plaster. If you don't want to use joint compound, do a google search for "paper pulp" mache. There are a lot of paper pulp recipes, but this recipe doesn't work at all without the joint compound.

About 2 1/2 cups.

You are very talented. I was wondering if you've ever used expanding foam (the stuff in a can) to flesh out any projects and if you could PM over it once its fully dry either paper strips or the clay. In place of using a lot of the crumbled up paper.

I don't know how I'd show that, but the dry air dry clay is very hard. It feels like fired clay, but of course it isn't waterproof.

The air-dry clay does form a "skin" in just a few minutes, so you would need to sculpt it right away, or cover with a plastic bag or something if you leave it overnight. Play with it, and see what you think - and then let us know.

Jonni, is it possible to extend the drying time for the silky-smooth clay? I have a project idea that needs at least two days for detailing the clay, so, I need it to stay very pliable. Thanks for all of your incredibly awesome videos!

Hi James. Yes, you can keep it covered with plastic wrap when you aren't working on it, and spritz it with water when it's uncovered. That should help. Good luck with it.

Thanks very much for this secret. Ma is this clay good for making jewelry?
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 11 месяцев назад
I haven't tried it. I know some people do use it for jewelry, though. The only thing I would suggest is that you be sure to seal the finished jewelry to keep it from absorbing oil from your skin. This person has a version of paper mache clay that she uses for jewelry: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CjJssX3XWy0.htmlsi=fqdjPCPh3S5Niwub

So today I decided to have a go, but I really wasn’t careful enough. I live in the U.K. so some of the ingredients were a bit of a mystery, like the DAB (?) stuff. But my main mistake was not to measure the paper dry. It seems my pretty standard loo paper roll has far more paper than the one used in this demo. I tried to get it down to 330 g, but it really didn’t work. So I had to increase all the other ingredients. I just hope I had chosen the right thing when I went for Polyfilla ready mixed filler stuff, but the whole tube didn’t have enough in it. Also I ran out of corn flour, so I quickly had to find something else. For the rest I used rice flour. In the end I got a humongous amount of clay. One large container was not big enough. I also seemed to break my mixer, though I hope it just cut out because it overheated. I will know soon enough. And I hope it won’t go mouldy. I haven’t yet tried the clay, but it doesn’t look bad, a bit gritty from the rice flour,though. Next time I will remember to weigh my loo paper dry!

Hi Tanya. The corn starch in the recipe is very fine, like baby powder. In fact, many people use it for that purpose. Corn flour is a different material, at least here in the US. It wouldn't be nearly as absorbent as our corn starch. If you have a lot left over, just put in a sealed container and pop it in the freezer. That way, you won't have to worry about mould moving in before you can use it.

Ultimate Paper Mache Ooops, I meant corn starch! Not the stuff that is coarser. I think both have the same name over here, confusingly, but then the coarse variety is far harder to find. I am not sure rice flour was a good choice, but then it has worked. Next time I really must be far more meticulous! Thank you for the tip of putting it in the freezer! At least some of it.

Hey Jonni, you wonderful human! I am always wanting to learn new things. I love creating! I am so glad I found you :) Just wondering if the clay would be more weatherproof if I used wood glue for outside use, and same with the compound.. And of course *Varnish* ! Also one for outside. Have you tried this? You probably have, but I ask anyway. If I dont ask, I will never learn, right? I live in Norway, and we also have wet and cold winters. Brrr, I hate it! Hopefully, this winter will be filled up with clay projects!! I love clay, since childhood, but think it is kinda expensive to buy. And, if I make the clay myself, I can call it 100% home made!! Maybe some stuff will get all the way to a Christmas market... Thank you so much for inspiring me and lifting my spirit! Hope you are doing well and that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy!! Bless you! Lots of hugs from Katla in Norway 🙏🌹

I've tried a lot of different things to make the paper mache clay waterproof, but none of my experiments have worked. The wood glue might help, but all of the other ingredients in the recipe are water soluble. I think it would be difficult to change just one of the ingredients and get it to work as well as a product that starts out waterproof, like cement or epoxy clay. Did you see my garden gnome videos? He was just as easy to make as my other sculptures, but made entirely with waterproof materials - and he's still doing just fine after several years outside. You can see the first video in the series here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xXSsRo59Kwo.html

Do you add any thing before your second layer such as water or glue to help it stick? Or does it stick to itself?

I think it helps to brush on some glue over the dried air dry clay. You don't need to do that with my newest recipe, which is almost as smooth, but slightly stickier. You can find it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3oF_tKaRiBY.html

Hi! I’ve been wanting to create small Christmas Village houses. That means putting this paper mache clay on top of cardboard houses. can i use this recipe ? One more thing, i couldnt find any drywall joint compound here. Can i use other joint compound as long as it has calcium carbonate?
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 2 года назад
Any water-based product, including this one, will tend to make flat cardboard warp. Be sure to watch your houses carefully while they dry. And I don't know if it matters, but this recipe is not intended for outdoor display. I don't know if the joint compound you're referring to would work or not. Are houses in your area made with drywall sheets on the walls? If not, you might not be able to use this recipe, but go ahead and experiment with what's available. Who knows - it might work. 😊

Does your air clay clay shrink when it’s dry? Some different tutorials I’ve watched they are making a base that is removable to prevent more cracking?? When your building it over your armatures have you dealt with much cracking and shrinking?? Does drying it in oven make a difference vs “air” drying? Thank you for your time and these tutorials!!
