I want to be a writer but I am terrified. Terrified I’m not disciplined enough, not smart enough, not going to produce anything worthwhile…but two years ago I attacked it, and after many ups and downs I’m finally achieving the level of discipline required, as well as learning a bottomless amount. None of this I could have done if I didn’t go all in. What helped me; and maybe you, is the complete determination to do what you want for you, no one else. So long as I wrote 10 books I’m proud of before I die, I knew I’d be content.

We are not nouns, we are verbs. I am not a thing - an actor, a writer - I am a person who does things - I write, I act - and I never know what I am going to do next. I think you can be imprisoned if you think of yourself as a noun.”

When I was a kid I remember thinking, that I only get one chance at life so it needs to be right... that was perfectionistic anxiety talking. I didn't commit to anything for years. I still struggle with that kind of thinking. It's severely life limiting

@letsgoBrandon204

@@sonicmaths8285 Have you found that being perfectionistic made/makes you think you can't be very conscientious? I was convinced that I was low in conscientiousness because I couldn't start anything, and whatever I did start I hardly ever finished. It's strange that being really high in conscientiousness can result in _not_ getting things done.
@sonicmaths8285
@sonicmaths8285 2 года назад
@@letsgoBrandon204 Yes, it also staggered me how this could be! I am quite industrious (cannot deal unproductivity of any sort) and thus conscientious, but being also very perfectionistic made me do for example homework only if I could do it correctly. If not then I wouldn’t even begin with doing it and therefore get seldom things done. If I do not have enough material to learn something, even if only a tiny piece of information lacks, I immediately cannot tackle learning. When I’m doing my routine and I cannot get up at the exact time I planned I need to wake up, I immediately throw my routine away and do nothing. There is only do or do not and nothing in between which is a bit harmful as I noticed for me. Interesting and bad combination of personality traits. At the same time, I cannot handle doing nothing for a period of time. Even while resting I think about I need to do something god damn productive. It’s like pressure or weight on your mind which becomes heavier as you do nothing. That’s why I manage to do something which aren’t the things I should be doing and I’m going in these kind of directions way too far which ultimately leads to nothing truely productive. This might mean that I am low in dutifulness.
@wallywest2360
@wallywest2360 2 года назад
Yeah, I'm right there with you. Perfectionism sucks. It makes you feel like getting 95% of the way there is failure. And nobody likes failure so eventually you just stop trying, that's if you ever start. I find that I spend more time thinking about what I'd like to do than actually pursuing it. And that I have so many varied interests that it's impossible to excel at them all, but the perfectionist in me won't accept that. I also identify with your statement about how being high in conscientiousness can result in not getting things done. It seems a paradox, but I have come that conclusion as well.

I'm 44 and still looking for my purpose. The last time I had any purpose was over 15 years ago when I was an apprentice heavy equipment operator. I had to leave that job and move to the coast to take care of some family issues and after I was forced to move back to my home town and ended up on SSI due to a diagnosed mental illness, life lost all meaning. The last few years, especially during the pandemic, I found myself drifting into the realm of existential nihilism.

47 years old here and gave up a career 18 years ago to study music and somehow make a life out of it. I've tried 'escaping' it many times (even moving to another country at one stage), just to experience a 'stable life' once again, but haven't been able to. Most recent endeavour was to become a music entertainer at retirement homes/care facilities - it's been my sole source of income for nearly 8 years, which got squashed by the events of the past 2 years. I think a lot of it comes down to personality; I feel like I've failed because I have nothing tangible to show for my work, have missed out on family, relationship, owing a home etc. It's been tough, and honestly I haven't wanted to carry on with life as a result. So in that regard maybe committing to a life purpose is better suited to certain people; as good as I am at my craft, I just can't let go of the feeling of loss, having missed out on a ''real life', whatever that is.

When Jordan Peterson said that the jobs should go to those who are the most productive, I smiled and chuckled to myself. Being a hard worker all my life, pushing myself to the limits, fulfilling my own potential, jobs more often than not do NOT go to those who are the most productive. By these day's standards, doing my very best terrifies people and I don't get hired. That's why I just became an Entrepreneur instead and started my own businesses so that I can at least live up to my own expectations and standards, and not anyone else's. Because the sad reality of life is that you can work as hard and smart as you can and still end up with absolutely nothing, while people who couldn't care less end up having it all. So, although I'm all for committing to that ONE thing and sticking with it, don't take life too seriously either. Also, whatever you decide to do, remember that there's no magical recipe to happiness in life. There are cons and pros to everything. My advice, follow your true purpose in life and do stuff that is challenging and which makes you better in every possible way. You should also learn and educate yourself continuously. Do not care too much about what other people think either. Most people don't have the guts to be who they really want to be and just want to follow the mindless zombie herd. But I can promise you this, you will let your inner spirit and fire die, and you will never be truly free and happy. Only people who go all out and realize their full potential in life are truly happy. The miserable cunts stand on the sideline and judge the people who they secretly want to be. Fuck em all!

@Dante-ot8xg 2 года назад
@@danfontaine8179 It depends on what you want to focus on within game dev. A lot of the roles certainly do, though the job content varies based on responsibility. The below is just me spewing out what I recall from me looking into it years ago. As of now, I'm still figuring things out. There are many roles within game development and design that one can take part in. Coding, art, writing, voice acting, music, business side( marketing/ accounting/ etc), and more. The actual game designers are what I understand to be more senior/ come from one of the game-building roles. Designers, from what I understand, try to guide everyone else to create the game they have in mind. Designers themselves can be divided up into different sections they're in charge of. For instance, level design or gameplay mechanics could be their domain. Coding is something that I found I could do, but wouldn't be happy with, in the long term, as I'm a very social type of person and need interaction. It would definitely require face-to-face time with a screen all day. Art is pretty straight forward with concept/ 3d/ illustration/ etc. These along with music and writing seem to be somewhat more contractual though permanent positions certainly exist. It seems to depend on the game/ studio. I like drawing, but not enough to draw all day. I don't have experience in music besides karaoke lol. Writing heavily depends on the game. Some require little others more so. A Writing position would be pretty cool since that would be the meat and potatoes of story-driven games. To get here, it would seem that more seasoned writers are taken on board to write a story that the lead game designers have in mind for games like god of war, etc. Other types of writers exist for different games. For instance, some are hired to write item descriptions for various objects in a mmo. Or another could be writing out the various dialog options in a game like divinity original sin. The requirement or skill of the writer is often based in proportion to the important story has to the game and what part of the game you're writing for. Item descriptions might not require GRRM for example.

Love this video and dr. Peterson. Anyway i've noticed a little audio problem. Everytime dr. Peterson speaks his microphone starts to make a weird noise and the noise suddenly stops when he stop to talk, like a constant breath into the mic. Anyway great video.

so refreshing, having done my own journey through shadow working, I understood, we often live lies coming from people with good intention (our own relatives) that prevented me to overcome my own delusions, at the same time, some of these, I created in the first place . When you wake up from this you see the damage, losses and the result of your own demise. Welcome to the partial collapse of identity that leaves you with amputated parts for a long while until you replace what's dead. No picnic at all. It's f*cking hurt. People faking toughness trying to impress look like adult children compare to this. When you get it, it is for sure that there's way worst than death cause at least death is temporary. What I fear more in case I don't find full redemption is eternal existence. For the moment, I'm still convinced I made n excellent choice of not having any children. Even though, I follow Jordan Peterson in the major part of his teaching.

The best way to recognize our progress in life is to listen to other people's interactions. Think of it like this, if you really think about not only what someone said to you.. But how they physically expressed themselves, the patterns of their facial idiosyncrasies. This information will tell you how YOU are being seen, through perception. Who that person is will also introduce a distinct mental bias that you must consider, very little of what we say is perfectly understood. So the bias comes into play when we recall exactly what was said, and by our own means of interpretation we encounter a sort of road block, it might be an error to assume someone was being viscious or deceitful. If you're on the wrong train of thought, well it's hard to turn a train around. I've been researching consciousness in my spare time, and how it relates to human ability. It's a very misunderstood topic, for example.. Synesthesia is a condition where people can see the color of sound!The world is a complex arrangement of systems and principles which operate autonomously, that is to say creatures and life functions via survival instincts, "drive". Inorganic matter on earth, minerals and chemicals, operates on a set of principles which are more chaotic at a glance, driven by flow and consequence of interactions with the environment. Finally, humans don't get an instruction manual for life on how to be, and what to expect. Everything must be learned, taught, and experienced. This is why I decided to research consciousness, writing was always my hobby. And now I've learned to focus on critical thinking, and write about my observations and opinions. I think it's super interesting how our brain creates reality in our mind, so we can make sense of it. The world you see and the world of another person are completely different, your instruction manual would only work for you, but what even is a COMPLETE human? I think the process of creating the manual through experience is the fabric of this world we live in. Cheers, this was fun to think about. Have a nice day, Jordan Peterson is a wise man, very sage like.

Can anyone offer some advice? I had an opportunity to stay in a city greatly affected by the pandemic. I was even offered a “stable” job at the end of 2020. However, I was scared of committing myself to the job for fear of being isolated for an entire year, so I ended up moving to a different city to be closer to family and got a remote job instead. The problem is that I feel like I’ve missed my golden opportunity to make a difference in the previous city since the pandemic is waning down. However, the damage that was done to said city was so substantial that I feel personally responsible for letting the city down and I’m unsure of what use I’d be now. Should I go back? Should I stay where I am? How do I know it won’t be a waste of time?

Talking about changing course . . . SUCH THAT the next thing is " at least equally or more difficult. " In my life ( low level socially as it is ) . . . i have found that changing course is automatically at least as difficult as staying on the same path. Trying to make the change less stressful has always backfired for me. The harder i try to avoid stress . . . the more stressful the change becomes. Regardless of the new path or any other path. I think the word " PATH " is over used, over simplified, and under - defined and under - specified. Path can mean almost anything you want it to mean. I strongly suspect Dr. Peterson is using the term in a very narrow sense to refer only to a choice of major subject for undergrads or graduate students . . . rather than to a path in life in more general terms. Comments ?????????
@oakinwol
@oakinwol 2 года назад
Hmm, I think in context path is everything that you're doing to cause what you have fully committed to do make happen. So in this narrow sense not everything can be a path. It's only a path if it can definitely lead you where you are trying to go intentionally, as opposed to hoping happenstance just brings the thing you want to you. Yes it can be difficult to get off of a path you've committed to, bit many people turn back down the mountain when they see storm clouds ahead. Actually, I'd say we practically default to taking the easier "path" that is eventually harder and more damaging vs the harder path that eventually makes things better. This is due to our naturally discounting the future for the present. This is what we're trying to battle when going on a certain path gets hard in the short term

Why would I live a life experiencing just one thing?? People are different. There's people that can be happy doing just one thing for 60 years. This is the kind of people that have been born in their era. The era of Industrial Revoluion and capitalism. Where you are highly valuable if you are an expert in just one thing. Then there's people lik me that can focus on learning things to an expert level, but that have difficulty mastering it because of their hunger to know more about the world. We are the multipotentilites. People that want to experience as many trades as possible. People that get bored when they are super good at something. This kind of people don't live in the right society. Maybe in the future, when robots will replace all the experts it will be time for creative people, people that understand the process of cration from different perspectives, I think it will be our time. When I'm old, I want to say "I'm glad I learned all the different things I learned instead of focusing on just one thing and ignoring the rest".

Can someone please explain what Peterson meant when he mentioned the Patriarchy here? I've listened to that part again and again but it doesn't make sense to me
@YT.sophia
@YT.sophia 2 года назад
He was using it as an example of a disciplinary process. That we need to subjugate ourselves to a disciplinary process because that allows us to focus ourselves on a single line, to aim. He also explains why the bashing of a patriarchal system shouldn't be so quick, since he suggests that we need a disciplinary process, and some people believe that it is an oppressive system and that we don't need a disciplinary process.
