@shem I can't comprehend the poor state of life you must be living through, in order to spew such inconsiderate hatred towards a fellow man who shared a very loveable story. The ability of a child to read the gesticulation of his father and the gentlemen on the screen, would have been enough to awaken his archetypical understanding of the hero figure, thus leading him into a state of awe of a discourse he could not understand verbally. Moreover, i wish you the best of luck in life, hoping that a change of state will lead to a change of heart. Much love!

I am a woman who works in a very male dominated field, automotive. I have done everything from commercial parts sales, to service writing, to body repair & paint correction. I would say that 95% of my coworkers are men. I have yet to encounter a man who wants to prevent me from being successful at my career. I have had far more men try to propel me forward & help me in my career than the inverse. What I can say is that I have had men be skeptical of me & my abilities, which I would argue that they should be. It is no different when the new guy comes on board, they watch him & try to see where he is competence wise, & judge him based on his abilities. They do the same for me. I do not think that just because I am a woman that I should be treated with artificial favor, although sometimes I am & I know that. I think it comes down to being a pretty face & some men like having me around for that reason alone. But ultimately I have strong work ethic, & I love what I do, & I would like to say that I am pretty competent at my job. I just dont see the "patriarchy" as it is described by some people on the left.

was gonna comment this in reply to the other comment but seems more fitting to post it directly to you given its about you (lol) You dont see the patriarchy because you’re successful in an aspect of your life. The issue with the left is that they simply aren’t. Ive lost several friends over this past election cycle (all lefties). Not a single one of them would i label successful, and every single one of them has a sector of their life wherein they have failed (dating, school, work, etc). You have succeeded in the work sector (and id be willing to bet the others are fine too). You see that your sex didnt prevent you from “winning”. You see that the argument that society is holding your sex down is bogus and false.

Eric Weinstein is a fantastic left wing voice. I find myself disagreeing with him but I can see his point. I have certainly been almost completely drained of my empathy because I see it being taken advantage of by those who are successfully pushing a political agenda.
@ddillybar1
@ddillybar1 6 лет назад
Sandmanuel yes, he can actually discuss left wing issues in a reasonable and logical manner, and even though I don't fully agree with him on everything he makes very good arguments. That is something that is currently very rare from the left who seem to be more interested in silencing than discourse. I've definitely been questioning my lifelong liberal leanings as of late because the only intelligent discussion I see is not coming from the left. Eric made me feel like a liberal again.
@Saddamuel
@Saddamuel 6 лет назад
I think Eric Weinstein is coming at these issues with the right goal in mind and for the right reasons. So there are people who talk about the pay gap as if it is a problem because they see the world as a battleground between men and women. Whereas Weinstein is thinking about whether there is a way to allow more people to achieve their potential. I'm sympathetic to the idea that taking time out of a career to raise a family can set you back in the career but that is a choice women are allowed to make if they are lucky. I have no problem with part time work or even delaying work until later in life because we live longer - so perhaps a person could enter a company in their 40s and be valuable or perhaps that is impossible. It's about coming at it from a humanist perspective rather than a selfish conflict perspective - which is odd because the left see themselves as the empathetic side but I see their grievances and solutions as more based on negative emotion.

10/10 guest dynamics 10/10 discussion Dave - this episode's dynamic makes one thing clear: The imperfect-overlap between independent-right and independent-left perspectives is a SCORCHING HOT NICHE that your show can deliver. I enjoyed having Shapiro in the discussion, but I'd say that *whenever possible* - see if you can hook up ind-right and ind-left guests with imperfectly-overlapping takes... the overlapping agreement can drive left-right consensus, while the rubs can draw truly BETTER battle lines that make sense. For this RR, I think this is your sweet spot - even if you're only able to coordinate it once a month. Great episode of the RR, thanks!

@danelmore6553
@danelmore6553 5 лет назад
@@ted_nemeth It is bait, like "bait a hook". Not bate, like "masturbate". Though, the latter is probably somewhat applicable also. I agree, by the way, but it is not only "the right" making click-bait soundbites. The entire reason classical liberals like Harris or Peterson, or even very liberal types like Bret Weinstein, get "adopted" as demi-gods of the right's rhetoric-machine is that the "progressives" attack anyone who disagrees on any one issue (which is the opposite of what the word liberal ACTUALLY means). It is easy for "the right" to validate their sales-pitch that these people are on their side when their opposition is actively trying to demonize them. It was clearly demonstrated first by the "illiberal left's" assault on Harris, for his approach to radical extremism, and then even more so with Peterson and Weinstein. All of whom were behaving as rational liberals when they infuriated the collectivists masquerading as liberals. Would not surprise me if Newt Gingrich actually created the progressive-movement, because there has never been anything so good for the republican party as people on the left acting like fascists. Now the right gets to keep being fascist, but look like the more sane of two options. I have heard 2 people this week say "classical liberal means Republican now". I can not imagine a way to demonstrate more disdain for language than to make such a overtly false statement - but it sums up perfectly exactly the sales-pitch of the Republican party. "So you do not agree that Peterson is a misogynist for stating that gender is one of many factors that determine pay? You do not think Bret Weinstein is a racist for going to work on No-White-People-Allowed day? Well congratulations, you must be a Republican!" Except - that is not just wrong, it is actually completely backwards.

Jordan is a gift for our time. There is no one on RU-vid who has JBP's credibility, when you're not ideologically blind, there is no escaping his truth, a gift for our time. As more dirt they throw at Peterson, the more he impresses. He is a rock in heavy waters, does not go for cheap compromises, for shallow peaces, so clear, so strict, but then still heartly, following his own truth, still open for the truth of others, ready to go an extra mile for the others to meet in the middle, so no one is the winner, but an even better truth.

Eric Weinstein is brilliant. There is no topic that I've heard discussed with him as a participant that he has failed to have a profound insight about. I've seen him with Lex Fridman, where he was superlative again. (Lex is definitely worth checking out: he 's an MIT engineer who makes deep learning and neural networks accessible to non-engineers. He has a marvelous podcast and a RU-vid channel.) Eric Weinstein is especially interesting when he talks about...higher mathematics. Yes. He makes that fascinating. I'm so happy that there are brilliant thinkers out there who are willing to face our current "cancel culture" times. That they can speak for 2- 3 hours with one guest or 2- 3 has restored my faith in humanity- and also makes me hopeful that this climate of being able to speak civilly and with interest to others with divergent viewpoints from our own will simply grow. That will only enrich us all. Jordan Peterson is simply my favorite Jungian existential psychotherapist on the planet. I could listen to him for hours, have learned more from him that from anyone else. He has had a terrible time with the radical Left, and I hope that he will be back and talking publicly again. soon. He has reached and helped so many people; his is a voice that I miss. Others to check out and support: David Berlinski, Joe Rogan, Peter Hitchens, Victor Davis Hanson, and of course, Eric Weinstein, Dave Rubin, Sam Harris, and Jordan Peterson.

I am having a very good problem, that i would describe as maybe world view or personal ethic whiplash. Simply put, all these people (Jordan Peterson, the Weinstein Brothers, Douglas Murray, Christopher Hitchens, Stephen Fry, Steven Pinker, Thomas Sowell, Sam Harris etc.) are so interesting to listen to. So you are listening to it and constantly go "oh he has a good point" and then the other debater says something and i go "oh well that is superbly interesting too". That this kind of discussion and so many more like it are just available has enriched my life a lot. So even if i have not understood all of it and i cannot say that i would claim that, a sincere thank you for having it.

There is one part of what Weinstein said that had me thinking for a while. It was about his statement that (anecdotally) in a phsyics or math department when there was only one girl there, she usually dropped out, possibly because of feeling alienated (key word being possibly, we don't know). However, when there were two girls, then both found support as a group and made it through. Initially it made me rethink about my position of pure meritocracy and the issues that feminists are complaining about when it comes to occupations that are overwhelmingly male. So yes, it's nice of Weinstein to make me do an intellectual double take. But after thinking about this, I think there is a weakness with this kind of reasoning. In Weinstein's tale, it was limited to girls who (possibly) felt overwhelmed in an nominally male environment. However, if one wants to take this to its logical conclusion, one has infinite regressions into this tale. It is not limited to women feeling "uncomfortable". The tale can be retold using a gay man who dropped out of physics because of it's overwhelmingly hetero environment. Or it could be retold with black men feeling alienated. Or it could be a left handed man feeling alienated. The point is, if there's obvious discrimination going on, I would say work on removing that kind of discrimination from the field so that minorities can be treated fairly. But at some point, it's not the field, it's the individual who is feeling alienated who might have to change their attitudes. Afterall, even in the original case with the lone girl in physics feeling overwhelmed, according to Weinstein, the phsyics departments normally are very neutral when it comes to sex. As far as I"m aware, they mostly care about physics, not someone's gender! Any hangups that a girl may feel are her own personal demons, and it's up to them to get over these demons. At some point I don't think it's up to the department to try to be "inclusive". They should strive to make the opportunities available to all who qualify, and attempt to be as courteous and respectful as possible. But all this "forced inclusion" stuff, I think while such a tale is a very rosy ideal, as stated above the problem is that we can apply it to an infinite amount of categories, not just gender, and when we do we fall right back to all this social justice inclusivity nonsense.

The thing that makes it extra hard being the lone woman, is that men get really threatened by it. I've seen it before in more low brow male dominated jobs too. They just can't relax when a chick is doing the same work as them. It's exhausting to be that woman. Who wants to feel like shit everyday? Why not just go do something else that doesn't have that pointless tension?
@afifahhamilton8843
@afifahhamilton8843 6 лет назад
I think you are mistaken about the men feeling threatened by the presence of the woman. Rather, I would suggest, that the sexual frisson of having a whole live woman, sending out pheromones and having hormonal cycles that alter her skin tone, her scent, her hair lustre, lip plumpness etc etc, let alone her moods, is enough to unsettle men! Men working with men know what they are doing and what each other are doing, but they do not really know what women are all about (and neither do women of course, but that's just how it is!). To expect a working environment that is 'comfortable' or conducive to full productivity once a woman shows up is not reasonable! We all know that, actually, but no one is stating it! Why not? Is it a taboo now? Apparently yes. And if a maths or physics dept full of 24 year old single men suddenly has a 24 year old woman in it she will definitely be the object of virtually all of their desires, and a total distraction. How d'ya handle that? They suffer, and she suffers. They know that most of them will be losers in that mating game, and that the 'alpha' will win her, and thus they will all feel like 'betas', and she knows that jealousy and failure will be the effect of her choice, for the losers. And choosing a man from an great array of good men is hard for her too, so she's almost bound to make a hash of it leading to all sorts of intrigues and emotional disruptions in herself and in them. It's a nightmare for them all. Better by far to have men and women occupy areas of interest without the weird pressure from others to do the work of the other sex! What is all that about? Girls and women should be given an education like that of boys, but with each sex having the additional angle on their speciality, for them. Girls need to know, in a positive and uplifting way, that they have the means of reproducing a baby right there in their bodies, built in, and excellent - indeed they should be specifically taught that it is a glorious task, with heaps of great feedback as the children mature, as long as she selects a good, capable man, who can earn well, and who wants to dedicate his efforts to her and their growing family. Better for her, better for the children and better for the men. Women will find endless meaningful avenues of intellectual and earning value during and after this proper biologically appropriate stage. I certainly have! Yes, the traditional patterns are indeed superior. Obviously. Those who despise such things are the trouble makers. Look what trouble they have made for us all! Any great invention or theorem that a woman can be credited with is NOT due to her sex, and in the vast majority of cases a man could have achieved it just as well, and probably did. There has been nothing to stop women from being fantastic composers, yet few have been. Many play in orchestras, many listen to music and are deeply musical, but few give the sort of focused attention to composing symphonies or operas. And don't tell me it's because the male domination of the field precludes them! It does not. To quote the famous Nobel Laureate, the physiologist Tim Hunt "Let me tell you about my trouble with girls … three things happen when they are in the lab … You fall in love with them, they fall in love with you and when you criticise them, they cry". He didn't get a Nobel Prize for nothing! Indeed he nailed it

2:05 No mystery here. Jordan is a person who walks the talk. Well read. Science based. Articulate. Passionate about the state of mankind. Self made. Been the trenches of clinical psychology. And is aiming high. Good for him!

Jordan Pederson is a right wing celebrity professor who does not use a fact based argument. He is not legitimate or representative of a consensus among his peers. Both Pederson and Weinstein are celebrities purely because they vilify the media and focus on the extreme left while glossing over conservative media and the extreme right.

Buck Starwell That is the pigeon holed, boxed in, inaccurate assessment of Peterson's dynamic, human subjective position, a narrative perpetuated by the MSM who attack him because they find him threatening to their scheme. You've missed the point and I would guess you didn't listen to much of any of these casts. The important thing about these individuals is not their respective positions, but that they seem to be the only ones willing to break out of the established slots of discourse and reach across their ideological landscapes to cooperate and have true, honest, necessary discussion to reach, in unity, for a rational attainable future, together. That's the only gateway into a future we will all want to live in: egos and subjective opinions on the backburner, in favor of unity and compromise for the good of all.

And Peterson uses facts and data, but also supports and theorizes using common symbolism, tropes, mythologies, literature, etc. From which he has intuited a real world, applicable philosophy that IS helping many people find meaning and purpose in their lives. If it doesn't work for you, ok, move on. People have widely varying subjective circumstances and philosophies. There will be no one size fits all solution. But a self-actualizing professor who discovers a way to positively impact hundreds of thousands of lives, and who is in-demand for doing so is far from illegitimate, and I predict that will become clear as the future unfolds, better for his having cared enough to try. What can any one of us say we have contributed to the collective benefit? You may not agree with his philosophy, but his efforts seem to be in earnest and have had positive results for many. Its easy for one who is not putting it all on the line to criticise those who are, especially when they are succeeding.

After watching this, I think that where Rubin could really shine as a host for these conversations is helping even out the distribution of speaking time. It would also help Eric gain some insight into how long he talks and dominates all of the time of everyone there and maybe even help him condense his points into a more concise statement that has more impact and is easy to digest. Sometimes the best way for someone to understand that they are doing something wrong socially is for friends to help steer them in the right direction, not necessarily tell them stop doing it. For example, I didn't realize how often I used the phrase "you know" in conversation until a friend said jokingly "if I don't know, trust that I will tell you". And we had a little chuckle, but after that, I started to hear myself saying it far too often and it helped me change the habit.

I disagree. One because of a point they made earlier and that was we have matured from what television media had conditioned us to be and that is to look for a winner in an argument instead of learning from a discussion through formats - like don't interrupt , interrupt or you are speaking for too long. Going by the majority of comments very many people were impressed by Eric's thought processes having not known him as compared to JP. Not sure I'm making any sense And two some arguments presented cannot be summarised from the top of one's head as we might want them to do .. it would be soo demanding of what these geniuses are venturing into and worse loose the audience having most not understand premises and fundamentals .. also not sure I'm making any sense - anyway , one love from Nairobi.

actually it's fun watching two super geniuses who are used to dominating conversations facing each other. may the best interrupter win! I get it, if I had that many brilliant things to say I'd be champing at the bit to speak too.

I have spent a lot of time with serious academics. Two of my mates are Lakatos prize winning philosophers, so I know what a decent intellectual conversation sounds like. This exchange is very academic in flavour. One thing that is characteristic of serious academics is that they do not lie or obfuscate. If they don't know something they don't pretend that they do. There is a certain flexibility of mind and appropriate humility in the face of complex problems. The fact that the world is now privy to conversations about serious and topical matters between people of such intellectual stature, originality and moral virtue is a very pleasing development indeed.

As someone who was not so knowledgeable on these issues, i am extremely grateful but surprised to see how far these conversations can go if neither one of parties tries to attack each other. I stopped this video at 1:57:50 and didn't realize i have been watching this for almost two hours. Great video. And continue...

Intelligent conversation with people from opposite view points!? No screaming and no hyperbole!? Geez! I thought this kind of discussion was a just vague memory/fantasy from my past. Dave, I'm literally starting to tear up at this renaissance of intelligent, civil conversation. It's you, man. You are providing the venue. Thank you so much!
