There is absolute evil, but it is usually out of reach for ordinary humans or alternatively bad/evil people are pawns to absolute evil. But you would be needed to be demonic to be absolute evil and even if let's say evil tyrants come close in being absolute evil they are not. In other words absolute evil is divine, but in reverse, so maybe complete saint turning 180?

I used to have a drug addiction for several years. Together with a certain aimlessness and lack of perspective it turned into a repetitive wheel that I simply couldn't stop. There were times where I had painful jolts running through my head, like electrical shocks, and I couldn't think straight for a second, a very deep depression. At some point I came to the realization not that I had to stop, I knew that for a long time, but somehow what made me stop was the realization how painful it would be. I was literally thinking "man, I'm so fucked up, it's going to take me years to recover from this". I couldn't even plan or think in such timespans back then. Somehow, that's still what made me stop destroying myself. The recovery process is worse than the addiction itself, and for every year you're addicted, you spend two recovering, there's so many defeats and few victories. Throughout my time of recovery, I made many discoveries about myself and how individuality in general has to be conceptualized in order not to be defunct. I still have many bad habits, I procrastinate and waste time, but I can only be dishonest to myself for so long and so much before I notice it. That's what I learned from that time.

You might be able to tell that this is my favorite topic and I hope it isn't too repetitive, but I personally think hearing it repeatedly in different contexts can actually help being observant of what you are actually up to. He says that people tend keep the shadow at an arm's length and that turns out to be an eternal/repeating problem for me, because everytime I think I can use it in a productive manner I always find new parts of it that I have kept at an arm's length and refused to even recognize. I tried to solve this problem by doing more reading, solving it with my head so to speak, but I came to the conclusion that to identify the parts of you that are aiming downwards, you have to keep fixing things that you can fix, because I think that's a limiting factor of honest self-observation and introspection, because otherwise your vision is too clouded with chaos. That's also a reason why I find this so terrifying because there are a ton of things I still need to sort out and therefore a lot of things I am still completely blind to.
@sawyerpayne7158
@sawyerpayne7158 7 лет назад
Bite-sized Philosophy I think that acknowledgement of the shadow must be a continuous process throughout one's life. I don't think anyone can reach a point where there's nothing left to discover and bring truth to. But that's also encouraging because it hints that there is no real cap or ceiling to how much one can improve oneself as long as they continue assimilating their shadow and aiming upwards

Okay I’ll come right out and own my shadow...I have been using my partner’s credit card behind his back and racked up a substantial debt that I am now, not surprisingly, having trouble clearing off. Please don’t judge me. I screwed up big time and now I’m owning my 💩 so I can start fresh and make amends for my past mistakes. Having to admit to myself that I’m a sneaky liar and a thief, when in reality or my idealised reality I used to think I was a fair and honest person...is tough. But I feel so much lighter just by acknowledging the darkest parts of myself that I spent the past 16 years keeping at arm’s length. Thanks for the inspiration JP. In life I have learned that the ONLY way to have a fulfilling life, is to get my act together and make something of myself. Nowadays, it seems that happiness is the meaning of life- which isn't true in the least. The only way forward is to be a proper individual, which means that it is a matter of duty to be a person who I would respect.

The way I feel about this is the fact that we give ourselves a sense of entitlement to allow us to proceed with bad judgement towards chaos. We need to pay more attention when we feel that we can act when we see something that we deem "wrong" and try to "make it right" by using "our sense of humor/justice" to make it right or "tech a lesson" (which normally involves humiliating someone else, thus enabling the idea of the "other"). Chaos will manifest itself to balance our arrogance and show us that "we can do better than that". Of course if you're in a position of power, things can get a little tricky because of that "sense of entitlement" I've mentioned in the beginning.

I lacked father figure severely. Although I lived with both of my parents, my mother did everything and my father never had any good advice to give as growing up, he was just so selfish and seemed to even be in a different room a lot as he doesn't like being around kids, even evident still now that there's grandchildren visiting, he does exactly the same thing as he did when we was kids. I like to watch Jordan Peterson in order to get the kick up the arse my father made me end up needing.

@@jackiedouglas4483 that's what happened and things are much different 3 years later. Much different. Looking at that comment I posted now makes me cringe tbh. I got rid of 'self help' stuff ages ago because I found it actually doesn't help much. Only you can help yourself. Once you've seen half an hour of Peterson you've pretty much seen what he's all about and ever got to say. It goes round and round so you keep hearing the same stuff but worded slightly different. If somebody watches Jordan Peterson or any other self help charlatans for advice on how to become a stronger, better, more approachable man, and after a year you still never go outside, that person really doesn't want to help himself. Seriously, half an hour of Peterson is enough. There's hearing it, but then there's doing it.

One thing I take issue with when it comes to Jordan Peterson is it seems he has no problem giving Carl Jung and his philosophy the Credence to be literal and real, but regarding the Bible (which he gives just as much weight to as he does Jung) Bible as myth the only paints a picture of reality - but not with the literal conviction he attributes to Jung.
@Buntarded
@Buntarded 4 года назад
He gives them both equal credit where credit is due. Jung put nearly all the myths together to come up with a literal understanding, and the bible is one of those myths.

I am in a terrible way and do not know where to turn. I have always scoured my psyche and have found many things that terrify me. However I recently took a good look at my sexuality and found self destructive obsessions that do reach down to the deepest levels of malevolence. I am so traumatized I don't know how to navigate forward. I am stopped in my tracks. It was so much more than I was ready for and to integrate this seems like it would destroy my whole being.
@gansonaki
@gansonaki 6 лет назад
Nick Sievers Depending on what those things are, turn your attempts more toward simply acknowledging those obsessions, and acknowledging the virtue that is keeping what needs to be suppressed, suppressed. That way, you’ve got total control of yourself, which is very empowering, yet you’re also living as honestly as possible by acknowledging it within. That’s how it is integrated. Because even if nobody else knows, you do, and that understanding is being honest with yourself. Which brings you closer to living truthfully, which is the goal. Be at peace with it. That is what will keep you from ever needing to act on it. But one of the most important things to take note of is the undeniable reality that is this - we ALL have that malevolence inside, or at least the potential for it. All of us in different ways. So view it as a piece to your total puzzle as a human being, because you’re not different or worse than anybody else. It’s like what JBP says about the nazis - don’t ever act like you’d never be one of them if you were living in nazi Germany. Because odds are, yes you would.

As painful as it is to behold all these dimensions of your psyche, it's such a gift to be aware, but it's very helpful to connect tangibly with wise and compassionate elders who can support and mentor you, beyond the shame and blame narrative which is common in society. I'm speaking from personal experience as i was in a chronic state of despair for more than 10 years and had no idea how i'd find the way to come back into loving myself and life. As a wise meditation teacher told me 'There's nothing within the realm of the mind which cannot be completely transformed within the course of a lifetime.' In desperate times when nobody was with me i'd keep my hand on my heart and breathe with those words... Cultivating some kind of self compassion is essential. One breath at a time Nick... Keep the faith and trust in the power of your Self.

I believe that we are all alike more or less we are exactly the same. The things that make us different are that we have different stimuli that bombard us. And over time that creates a psychological variation. Much like a genetic variation but with less time. So when you read a book of fiction or non fiction. You are having a conversation with a part of you that you have not explored. A canvas of the human experience that is new to you and therefore in pieces relatable.

At first I was opposed to the idea of Hell as I thought it was propaganda in the societies where Abrahamic religions were founded to intimidate citizens into following the laws at the time by exploiting their fear of death. I also thought that no one deserves to be tortured for eternity after they die as a punishment for anything, much less for rejecting Christianity out of free will or not attempting to follow the ten commandments etc. But this has kind of made sense in a way because Jordan talks about interpretations of what it means to sin and how it isn't just not going to church on Sunday, its about being destructive, which is why all religions abrahamic or not seem to have their own version of Hell which makes me think why, and the how the ideas of post-mortal existential consequence for a life poorly lived seem to be a primal thing in modern humans. Basically to sum my point up: Hell seems to be more a consequence of failing to live constructively and with integrity rather than just rejecting a God.

@@aldreiong7679 wow a lot has changed since this comment. When you ask yourself deep questions that you've been avoiding your whole life, you're forced to confront reality when you finally begin to answer those hard questions. This breaks any delusions you might have about your perception of self. Integrating your shadow involves objectively analysing your past experiences and coming to terms with the reality of your life and for many, including myself, this is pretty hard. No one (except for me and a few rare others) voluntarily chooses to confront their 'shadow'. Most prefer to live in delusion where ignorance is bliss. But then again, most people are mediocre. All this leads to a form of ego death where you are stripped of your self identity and the best analogy I can describe is like that of a snake shedding its skin. After you shed your skin (ego), you don't know who you are and if that is your first experience, this can be difficult to cope with. I became psychotic and depressed for like 6 months during this period but I managed to recover. This was in on itself traumatic. After the recovery everything changed. My behaviour and mentality improved and I stopped failing at life. Infact, my life is better than ever today. I believe the difference between choosing a path of mediocrity and greatness is your willingness to accept suffering as a fact of life rather than trying to hide or escape from suffering. In order to be great, I must 'suffer' and commit to passing the difficult challenges I have selected by choosing the path of greatness. Purposefully integrating the shadow is step one.

@@vincentlongo2386 Have a plan. If you're going through tough times then accept your suffering and embrace hitting rock bottom. When you're at rock bottom you feel the most amount of negativity that all your dark thoughts and emotions come to the surface and feel normal. It is at this point you confront your shadow. It will either destroy you and you become a miserable cunt forever or you can face it and integrate your shadow with the intention of becoming a better person with noble aspirations and purpose in life. This is not easy because even though I succeeded, I nearly got kicked out of university. I smoked a lot of weed too which exacerbated the depression. Dont let this experience fuck up your life, even though it feels like hell, understand this is a natural process that grows your character and makes you become the person you want to be.

I know that Peterson means aiming at the higher good by telling the truth, but this idea is just ludicrous and unattainable in reality that we've been placed to be always honest at all times. The thing is that when you encounter a predator (we all do at some point of our lives in various environments) you'll absolutely fall prey to them if you're honest at all times just because you're too predictable. In my opinion lying and deception should be kept up there in our psyche so it's available for use when needed. It's a tool that's supposed to be well managed, just the same way as truth should be handled.

What constitutes 'moral degeneration'? Is it what is mentioned as Evil at 3:50 ? Hurting someone self conciously. Is it just action or both action and thought? For instance, if I fantasize about killing an innocent person but i don't really carry out the act, would that be considered moral degenation and would it contribute to the degeneration of the cosmos?
@davidparker3834

Great question... if "thoughts are invisible things" that do work, regardless of whether or not they're expressed into physical action... and everything is connected energetically at some level(s).. then we're responsible for far more than we often want to realise/acknowledge at both a personal & collective level!
@raghunath8246
@raghunath8246 5 лет назад
@@davidparker3834 in that case, is the cause effect mechaism like a physical law purely based on the thought and action one engages in? is it like, u do this or u think this and this will be the repercussion? I'm not buying that coz very rarely do two different people get the same out come for the same action...good or bad...so what's next? could it be that the reward or punishment for your thoughts or actions depend on how you relate to it? coz that could be totally different based on your religion, culture, upbringing etc. idol worship, eating meat, even muder can be perceived as good or bad based on ur cultur and all of this can be changed by convincing the person that it's all in your head....that's what psychologists do....to me, JP appears to be a pastor in disguise...either his religious conditioning is very deeply rooted in him or he is doing it intentionally in an attempt to revive religious morality...perhaps he clearly see's the dangers of a godless world...the world could end up in chaos if no on believes in god anymore...that I believe is a genuine concern....if there is not going to be any sort of a backlash for engaging in a so called evil deed, why should u not hurt anyone for personal gains? Why sould I not murder my neighbor and steal his car? u can argue that the law will take care of that... well, old religious beliefs form the basis for modern laws...they are still relevant in the form of modern laws and if we completely take away the value of those religious teachings, sooner or later all laws will fade away...it just takes one maverick like a hitler or a Mussolini for that to happen...imagine a totally godless evil person coming to power in a nation? he can throw all laws out of the window and then what happens? the country goes into chaos...and in today's world if that start's off its gonna be hard to control it....it could lead to the total obliteration of the human race....

I think when you don’t question the thought (good or bad) you begin forming a habit of feeling those thoughts and playing them out either mentally or in reality. Being possessed by the shadow’s feeling is what Jung would describe as being possessed by the Goddess Eros. You begin to let Eros subconsciously drive your life. It’s up to the individual to interpret the shadow’s information. Doesn’t mean you’d carry out the actions, but it does mean you’d fall into the category of the collective unconscious-to which you were “just doing your job” by executing innocents if you were forced to. Or you carried out that school shooting by executing that which you hate in yourself. So my conclusion is that we’re all in moral degeneration (born in sin). In certain areas, we can tell ourselves what we are and aren’t capable of, being born in sort of a neutral ground-and through nurture we decide what is “justifiable” while letting the other areas slip into oblivion, not realizing we’re all capable of the most horrid evils and wondrous goods. It’s up to us to face ourselves and begin being arbiters of the highest standard to stop this regression, and some are lucky and stumble into this accidentally; others are simply privileged enough to not ever have to ask these questions. All you have to do is analyze your emotions, thoughts, and shadow interpretations because it’s your conscience telling you what you need to fix in yourself that would affect the world positively.

You’re just lucky. Meaning it’s something that could happen but you shouldn’t count on it. It’s also a matter of time, so you don’t want to pile up those situations. You never know when life will present you the bill. You could do something today, and put in action a chain of events that will suck you down in hell at some point 20 years ahead in your life. Giving the right amount of time, you will end always paying your price. For all we know, only the dead can’t be asked the price of their actions.

Watching this after covid is really daunting. I feel that we have all been given the greatest excuse to allow our economies to be destroyed and our rights to be taken away. Indeed covid is an excellent excuse but it is an excuse none the less. I am facing a lot of darkness in other areas but I truly aim to one day help in rebuilding our confidence as people. We should not be reduced down to just biological vessels that carry and spread death. I feel that everyday now. People looking at each other like they are just wild pests that carry disease. And we have re education camps being built for trump supporters. We are in terrifying times and there is no amount of calling it 'unprecidented' that can make it go away. It's not even about the virus. It's about our willingness to see ourselves a certain way. We are not walking diseases. We are agents of wellness not chaos. Well actually we can be both, but as Jordan says it's a choice. And the choice is made when you decide to look at what we can be rather than what we are being told that we are.
