James Kalm has been watching the evolution of Julian Schnabel’s painting practice since his arrival in New York in 1979. “Flower Paintings” pairs Schnabel with long time friend and admirer Jorge Galindo, for an exposition into current modes of thinking regarding one of art histories most revered subjects, the floral still life. Having met Galindo in Madrid in 1991, these two artists have been acquainted for thirty years, and share a penchant for technical experimentation, robust materialism, and exuberant brush work. This program was recorded June 26, 2021. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

Saw this show a few weeks ago. Galindo, not bad but nothing special. What does not work is the juxtaposition of the XL work of Galindo on one wall opposite the medium size stuff by Schnabel on the other wall. Just had an oddball vibe to me. If Vito continues to show just his father and company than I don't think he's going to be taken very seriously in the art business. This makes 3 clunkers in a row. My pick of the summer season would be the stunning pen and ink drawings by Matthew Wong at Chiem and Read a few blocks north on 25 St. It's a rare gallery show in NYC that's on view for 4 months. When you see it you'll know why. Amazing work.

Great to see the paintings over printed canvas. Based on your seeing them in person, do you think any of the abstract painting is also photographic?

Or, should I say, printed.

Hey@@pjsmalley No, from what I could detect, all the gestural brushwork was hand-painted (but these are the kinds of questions that some of Richard Prince's recent work has entailed...)...JK

The plates don't have the depth of his previous plate paintings. these look like, well... just paint on broken plates.

Flowers again. This is currently a thing, isn't it? Might be true, people don't want to talk anytime about theirself, but the abstract is kind of scary right now, so one will look for something to rely on. And as always, thnak you Kate!

After several days of anticipation, the video drops! As Julian heads towards the horizon of a long and storied career, revisiting his greatest trope (broken crockery) again seems a very delicious choice. The paintings feel reserved, but nothing if not gorgeous. Nice pairing with his friend Mssr. Galindo. Excellent work, James! Thank you, and thank you Kate.

Hard not to see these as simply decorations for very rich people's homes.

The greater the ignorance, the harder it will be. That’s not meant as an ad homenim, I just mean that the context is important. Like any decision the more information you have the better choice one can make. Having said that, what is it that drives the price? Supply/demand? Mixed with privilege or powerful narrative? /shrug to chastise w/o the answer to basic context seem brash?
@MikeWitmerNatureJournal
@MikeWitmerNatureJournal 3 года назад
@@bernardlindeman739 Context in this case, time and place in history plus fact that these are really repetitions of earlier modes of painting ( that happened to be very $ successful for these artists) tells me what these are about. Paintings made by rich artists for rich clientele. Unless the gallery and museums are somehow in a very incestuous relationship, I doubt any of these will end up in any major museum. They are neither here nor there historically....just decorations made with a certain intention. Just my take. Even deKooning in older years was still pushing the envelope making relevant painting.

The trouble with so much ‘gestural abstraction’, work is the gestural marks end up looking so pretentious rather than focussed spontaneous gestural marks.

Societal degradation at its best. The little part that has merit is not worth the time or effort. Is he trying to fool us or himself? Or, maybe there is just something that does not translate thru the media? That is possible. Yet, historically, painting was realism, or very close to it, and later painting was abstract (yes in some cultures it was always abstract, and some aspect of abstraction existed in all art from the get go), and then painting "died". In today's art world it appears some can not make up there minds, or can not second guess the market and/or the critics and politicians and art historians and gallery owners. So they try to straddle the fences between the two try to make a for sure winner by satisfying both, just in case. Much like the blatant sinner who goes to mass once a year and sends the church a $100 bill! Just in case. Perhaps this is just a statement to point out all the previous crap that got praised for being master works, but were mediocre at best. When it comes to master works, we are then speaking of politics and commercial activities rather than art. After all what has been mastered? Many artists fail to succeed, but not for lack of artistic merit. But if you can sell it, it's labeled masterpiece and we all know, "what is one man's junk, is one man's treasure". The junk store operator is just as much a master artist, and perhaps more so than anyone associ a Ted with an art gallery. Thanks anyway y'all. Thank you miss Katie Mae!
