you always hear over and over how carreras should’ve never taken these roles but how could one say that in the face of this!! His voice just soars over this orchestra with no issue. magnificent!!
I love hearing Jose Carreras in a role I didn't expect. As always, he's terrific, passionate, fully committed. He lets you focus on the character and the music, even though it's tempting simply to swoon. Here he is heartbreaking.
That Carreras did not have the spinto or dramatic tessitura for this role is what makes it more impressive. He manages his resources even better than those with a more suitable voice. He certainly transmits the emotion that is driving Canio to kill Nedda. I agree with all posts here that he is my favorite for this Opera when he was at his best.

Non v'è dubbio che Carreras sia stato un grande interprete dei ruoli veristici, compreso Canio - ricordo che l'anno successivo mandò in delirio La Scala proprio con I Pagliacci. Tra l'altro, questa registrazione è un documento chiaro circa la "quantità" della voce del maestro: qui si sente bene, oltre ogni possibile dubbio, come fosse un tenore lirico pieno, senza un decibel di meno. Alcuni continuano a scambiare la delicatezza del timbro con una ridotta sonorità dell'emissione. Io lo sentii dal vivo: la voce si espandeva, eccome se si espandeva.

Nonostante sia una discreta esecuzione,la vocalità di Carreras è in difficoltà a causa della partitura drammatica e verista...la direzione secondo il mio parere è eseguita per far risaltare queste voci non adatte al ruolo...Josè non è male!...grazie

Me pregunto, si cuando tira todo el mantel con las cosas de la mesa.... y el cuchillo se hubiera volado o escondido...como los habría matado???? . Que suertudo. Se dio la vuelta y lo encontró a la vista. En otras representaciones el cuchillo se lo pasa Tonio. Esta es del 90. 4 años más. Ya después de la operación. Vocally this is a bit beyond lyric tenors. This includes Carreras who here just over sings everything above an F to compensate. The Nedda here sang this as if she was singing Mozart. In addition to these stylistic mishaps the staging is terrible in this production , the costumes are just a sea of white lending an anemic quality. The conducting has no accent or clarity. It was played as if this entire were Bellini or something with a lot of drawn out notes from the orchestra. Overall the effect is just not scary nor veristic as Leoncavallo wrote. These operas work best when sung with a raw bright diction and searing vocal line with plenty of accent and attack and thrill. In short in a true verismo style.
