There is a film online of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, the Vienna Philharmonic and Lang Lang recording two Mozart concertos. During the filming a member of the orchestra (it may have been the concertmaster) said, with a mixture of great admiration and reverence, "Whenever Nikolaus Harnoncourt comes here we learn something."

After the energetic 'vivace' and the charming 'menuetto', comes one of the most sublime 'adagios' Haydn or anyone else ever conceived, a totally original concept and inventiveness at its' peak (forget the "Surprise" Symphony, this movement alone is a much greater one, and has more of them). After that experience and the breathless 'presto' finale, I call this one of Haydn's best symphonies, a product of white-hot inspiration. And this performance - wow!

@elaineblackhurst1509
@elaineblackhurst1509 9 месяцев назад
@@DressedForDrowning You’re right that the total number of symphonies is 107, however, we arrive at that number thus: Symphonies 1-104 (Hob. I:1-104) The sinfonia to Le pescatrici (Hob. I:106) Symphony ‘A’ (Hob. I:107) Symphony ‘B’ (Hob. I:108) The Sinfonia concertante is indeed listed as Hob. I:105, but it is *not* a symphony, neither are the two sinfonie concertanti by Mozart K297b and K364 symphonies either; they are composed in an entirely different way.
@DressedForDrowning

@@elaineblackhurst1509 I recently learned that there seems to be a 106th symphony, so it's 108 in total.
@elaineblackhurst1509
@elaineblackhurst1509 9 месяцев назад
@@DressedForDrowning I think not; I am sure that the correct number is 107 as detailed in my previous reply. As far as I am aware, there are no lost symphonies, and none that are spurious, so unlike one or two other areas - like the set of missing piano sonatas, or the double-bass concerto of 1763 - there is actually nothing left to be discovered as regards the symphony, and the total cannot change. Part of my certainty over this issue is that Haydn kept a catalogue of his works from the mid-1760’s - the Entwurf-Katalog - where he entered the incipits of the missing keyboard works, but there are no incipits of any missing symphonies, they are all accounted for. In 1805, a second catalogue - the Haydn Verzeichnis - was compiled, and this too contains no missing symphonies. In short, there is no ‘106th’ symphony. Note: some authorities do not include Hob. I:106 in the list, thus reducing the number to 106.

Symphonies are rather like meals, you have a number of courses which tend to be very different; if the prefer the dessert to the fish - that’s cool.
@elaineblackhurst1509
@elaineblackhurst1509 8 месяцев назад
@@jasonhurd4379 You might find my reply above of interest. Additionally, Haydn tried very hard over his career (as did Mozart post-1781) to deal with the problem of lightweight finales unbalancing his symphonies; the relatively short 2/4 or 6/8 frolics of some of the earlier works simply would not do (and Haydn knew this). Haydn fixed the problem in a number of ways, sometimes extreme ways by adding fugal finales as in Symphonies 3, 13, 40, and 70, but otherwise by developing new forms such as sonata rondos, and incorporating more counterpoint and development into the movements whilst keeping them ‘popular’ in tone and mood (with notable exceptions). In short, the Finale problem you mention *is* evident in some of the earlier works, but it was one Haydn fixed (and Mozart clearly noted after he moved to Vienna). This is evident from Symphonies like 42 of (1771), where the new design of a more substantial finale - that does not sound like an opening movement - is very successfully achieved.

The Classical period and its composers - most obviously Joseph (sic*) Haydn and Mozart as you rightly say is the beginning of modern classical music in that they composed in forms and genres in a way that composers have done ever since - symphonies, solo concertos, string quartets, sonata form, et cetera. I’m not sure how you came to the rather odd re-write of history and chronolology to suggest that Mozart followed Haydn (Beethoven clearly did, as surely as Mozart did not). Haydn 1732-1809 Mozart 1756-1791 The list of major compositions by Haydn written *after* the death of Mozart is astonishing by any standards and includes the vast majority of his best-known works: ‘London’ symphonies Trumpet concerto String quartets Opus 71/74, Opus 76, Opus 77 15 piano trios Piano sonatas Hob. XVI:50, 51, 52 The opera L’anima del filosofo The scena ‘Berenice, che fai ? The last six masses The Creation The Seasons The part-songs Hundreds of Scottish and Welsh folk-song arrangements Et cetera. Given the above list, however could you misleadingly claim that: ‘Haydn laid the foundations in music [True] for later composers to follow [True] like Mozart, [True, but only by birthdate] and Beethoven [True]. In short: Mozart was not a ‘…later composer’ than Haydn who both preceded, and succeeded/followed him. * The composer’s name is not ‘Papa’.
