I think GLENN BECK should be alerted to this property. He has made it one of his missions to buy and preserve countless historical items important to our country, religion and humanity. He has the proper heart for this project and would be the right steward, in my humble opinion. He probably already has numerous preservation contacts he could consult from his Rolodex. Can someone please get a message to him about this property?

Hey! 1 tiny mistake in this episode. The Joseph Smith frame home near Palmyra DOES have actual work from the Smith family. In 1997 the church started to take away the additions that had been added to it. When they took down the plaster from the walls in one of the rooms, they could see the actual outline of the original stairs because the white wash on the plank walls. Most everything in the home is not original, but there are still some original walls.

Don keeps giving out inaccurate information on this cave. The cave was closed before 1825, and so the Book of Mormon was not copied in the cave. Lucy Smith mentions that Cowdery rented a room on Main Street in Palmyra to copy the manuscript. According to Lorenzo Saunders, Alvin Smith and Willard Chase hired Luman Walters to find the treasure. Cole said the mantle of Walters the Magicial fell on Joseph Jr., and Saunders says Joseph saw a golden throne in the hill in his seer stone. The cave was dug mostly by Joseph Smith Sr. under Joseph Jr.'s direction. It's also not the cave of records, which is in the hill Cumorah. Don needs to be more care full about his sources. The printer, John Gilbert, mentioned the story about the cave, but it wasn't from personal experience but folklore. Don would do well to read my 1994 Dialogue article that documents the owner and renters of the cave, which Kerns used to find the cave.

And I read somewhere Joseph smith said he was not a treasure hunter but it was rumored about much.

Hey Don. You should definitely write a book about the association with those treasure digging people and history and how everyone was connected with everyone so people can understand why things happened. Like why people kept trying to get to the plates.
@randyjordan5521
@randyjordan5521 7 месяцев назад
Numerous books and articles have already been written on the subject. Jerald and Sandra Tanner published "Joseph Smith And Money Digging" in 1970. And of course, numerous acquaintances of Joseph who had been involved in his treasure-seeking activities swore legal affidavits to their experiences with him. Those were published in a book titled "Mormonism Unvailed" in 1834. Re: your comment about people trying to get the plates: Those people were Joseph's former fellow treasure-digging pals. They and the Smiths had signed an "articles of agreement" in 1825 in which they pledged to split any valuables they might find: "Another element in the religious and social milieu of the time was a continuing interest in various so-called 'magical arts', such as the use of divining rods or stone gazing (sometimes called 'glass-looking') in the quest for lost articles or buried treasure.....In Joseph Smith's time these practices were still accepted as authentic among the common folk in upstate New York.....Josiah Stowell.....located what he believed to be the site of an ancient Spanish mine...Late in 1825 he employed Joseph Sr., and Joseph, Jr., along with some other men, to help him find the treasure. According to Lucy Smith, Stowell hired her son 'on account of having heard that he possessed certain keys, by which he could discern things invisible to the natural eye.' Official articles of agreement were drawn up, and the Smiths were to share in the profits." ("The Story of the Latter-Day Saints," James Allen and Glen Leonard, pp. 15, 41.) "[Josiah] Stowell believed that he had located the site of an ancient Spanish mine.....Through the summer of 1825 he put his hired hands to work on the site.....When his men failed to locate the cache, Stowell enlisted the Smiths' help, and Joseph Smith Sr., and Joseph, Jr., agreed to join the diggers in Harmony. A set of 'Articles of Agreement', dated November 1, 1825,.....indicated that Joseph and his father were to receive two-elevenths of the ore in the mine or 'the coined money and bars of ingots of Gold or Silver' reputed to lie hidden underground.....[after Smith claimed to receive the 'gold plates'], treasure seekers like Chase laid claim to Joseph Smith as a former partner. 'The money-diggers,' Martin Harris explained, 'claimed that they had as much right to the plates as Joseph had, as they were in company together.' Over a year later David Whitmer met a group of incensed young men in Palmyra who claimed that before Joseph got the plates, 'he had promised to share with them.' One of them, Samuel Lawrence, and one [Alvah] Beeman, who worked with divining rods, came to the Smith house to try to persuade Joseph to give them a share. Joseph Knight, who was still at the Smiths', said 'they proposed to go shares with him and tried every way to bargain with him but could not. Whereupon Beeman held up his rods until they pointed to the hearth where the plates were hidden. "To throw off Chase and Lawrence, Joseph moved the plates from the hearth to the cooper's shop in the yard.....the device worked. Willard Chase brought his gang again that very night and his sister Sally with her green glass ["seer stone"]. They rummaged around outside but did not come in." ("Joseph Smith and the Beginnings of Mormonism," Richard Bushman, pp. 69, 83, 84.) The fact that those men failed to get the plates strongly suggests that no such plates existed. If that amount of gold actually existed, those guys would have threatened or harmed Smith until he gave them up. The fact that the men gave up so easily indicates that they realized that Joseph's story was bogus.

@@dcarts5616 More like an epic story of bullshit. Joseph Smith's evolution from a folk-magician into a Biblical-style "prophet" was detailed in an August 31, 1831 newspaper article: "It was during this state of public feeling in which the money diggers of Ontario county, by the suggestions of the Ex-Preacher from Ohio, thought of turning their digging concern into a religious plot, and thereby have a better chance of working upon the credulity and ignorance of the [their] associates and the neighborhood. Money and a good living might be got in this way. It was given out that visions had appeared to Joe Smith -- that a set of golden plates on which was engraved the "Book of Mormon," enclosed in an iron chest, was deposited somewhere in the hill I have mentioned. People laughed at the first intimation of the story, but the Smiths and Rangdon persisted in its truth. They began also to talk very seriously, to quote scripture, to read the bible, to be contemplative, and to assume that grave studied character, which so easily imposes on ignorant and superstitious people. Hints were given out that young Joe Smith was the chosen one of God to reveal this new mystery to the world; and Joe from being an idle young fellow, lounging about the villages, jumped up into a very grave parsonlike man, who felt he had on his shoulders the salvation of the world, besides a respectable looking sort of a blackcoat. Old Joe, the ex-preacher, and several others, were the believers of the new faith, which they admitted was an improvement in christianity, foretold word for word in the bible. They treated their own invention with the utmost religious respect. By the special interposition of God, the golden plates, on which was engraved the Book of Mormon, and other works, had been buried for ages in the hill by a wandering tribe of the children of Israel, who had found their way to western New York, before the birth of christianity itself. Joe Smith is discovered to be the second Messiah who was to reveal this word to the world and to reform it anew. In relation to the finding of the plates and the taking the engraving, a number of ridiculous stories are told.--Some unsanctified fellow looked out the other side of the hill. They had to follow it with humility and found it embedded beneath a beautiful grove of maples. Smith's wife, who had a little of the curiosity of her sex, peeped into the large chest in which he kept the engravings taken from the golden plates, and straightway one half the new Bible vanished, and has not been recovered to this day. Such were the effects of the unbelievers on the sacred treasure. There is no doubt but the ex-parson from Ohio is the author of the book which was recently printed and published in Palmyra and passes for the new Bible. It is full of strange narratives--in the style of the scriptures, and bearing on its face the marks of some ingenuity, and familiar acquaintance with the Bible. It is probable that Joe Smith is well acquainted with the trick, but Harris the farmer and the recent converts, are true believers." "They were called translaters, but in fact and in truth they are believed to be the work of the Ex-Preacher from Ohio, who stood in the background and put forward Joe to father the new bible and the new faith."

Hey Don! This is an interesting take. You mention as a significant piece of evidence for your theory that Oliver copied the BOM from the Manchester cave, that he wrote letters to Joseph stating he was writing from MANCHESTER, and not PALMYRA. This is surprising coming from you. The Smith's actually lived in MANCHESTER when Oliver was copying the BOM. It's not hard to find: Pearl of Great Price, Joseph History 1:3 "I was born in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and five, on the twenty-third day of December, in the town of Sharon, Windsor county, State of Vermont. … My father, Joseph Smith, Sen., left the State of Vermont, and moved to Palmyra, Ontario (now Wayne) county, in the State of New York, when I was in my tenth year, or thereabouts. In about four years after my father’s arrival in Palmyra, he moved with his family into Manchester in the same county of Ontario." The Smith Farm is partly in Wayne Co., and partly in Ontario Co. Palmyra is in Wayne, Manchester in Ontario. Joseph says the family lived in Manchester. So does canonized scripture. I find it really hard to see Oliver toting the manuscript back and forth between a damp, dark cave at least a mile away, rather than just finding space in a shed, or even in the Joseph and Lucy house to do his copying. The Smith home was a nice, spacious place, and the Smith's would have gladly let him do the work there. Actually, that is likely the place he did the copying.

Sincere question to true believing members and WARD RADIO if they'd care to respond: Here Don Bradly confirms that Joseph Smith in the 1820's (after the 1st vision) told people in his area that by looking into a seer stone he could see buried treasure which was protected by a guardian spirit. He led them on a number of digs in which certain rites were performed to thwart the spirit, but alas, no buried treasure was ever discovered. Do you A) Believe Joseph actually saw buried treasure in his rock and that the guardian spirits did in fact protect the treasure (which would mean the treasure is STILL there); B) Believe that the treasure/spirits did not in actuality exist but that Joseph was a delusional young man who DID believe that buried treasure was being revealed to him in the peep stone; or C) That Joseph was a con-man (or con-teenager as the case may be) who succeeded in duping gullible rubes (the name Josiah Stowell comes to mind) into paying him for the privilege of digging for non-existing treasure?

The Ward Radio staff wasn't just "talkin'_chit" the cave they were referencing in Manchester County New York was... the place where a lot of The Book Of Mormon was copied by Oliver Cowdery prior to sending a manuscript to printers to have it published in book form for the very first time. So that's the good news. The bad news is, there is no treasure inside of the cave other than historical; no item that would make Indiana Jones green with envy if someone else obtained it other than him. (And no treasure anywhere else on the property.) However for a private investor or a small group of investors, this property could be turned into a Latter Day Saint themed bed and breakfast that would make tons of money by having LDS tourists show up and stay overnight there... to see the sights and to gain more Mormon history information insight. To optimize the cash flow possibility... building tourist living quarters for 30 would be appropriate (so having another two buildings for traveler housing other than what is already there would make it possible to have the best experience for Latter Day Saint friends and family who chose to stay at that location overnight). Many Latter Day Saints already travel from places like Utah, California, Idaho, etc. etc. etc. once in their life to see the places like the Sacred Grove and other locations near and dear to Mormon hearts in the State of New York. So this could be another similar location like that, except in private hands... who might be less restricted in how they explain what happened in the past on that ten acre piece of property than dogmatic official Church sources. Digging for treasure is a great thing to do, if more people did that we would have less overweight people running around America's Walmarts and other shopping locations bumping into people with their shopping carts because they are in a foodie mental fog all of the time. Forget about sweating to the oldies... how about sweating to the treasure digging where there isn't any loot [eese]!!! This is one of the best ways to get "yoked" that has ever been invented. So there is another money_making idea, make and then sell a video where people dig holes in the ground looking for lost pirate treasure that isn't there... and continue to do so until they look like Greek Statues standing straight up. A treasure diggers' legs will be so strong after a few years of doing this kind of [shovel dig, dig, dig] exercise those who do this will be able to leap up into the air higher than a healthy young German Shepherd pup!!! . . .

New York has little to do with the Book of Mormon geography. Recall that General Moroni, who was named by his father, Mormon, after Captian Moroni, was included in the final battles that led to the basic extinction of the Nephite nation. The Lamanite and Nephite nations did not reach all the way up to the New York area until the final purge of the Nephites, who were trying to escape over a period of time. Moroni buried the plates in a stone box with a smoothed top stone placed over it. It was far from the usual geography of the Book of Mormon. As for the cave, the only official account is Moroni taking them back along with the rest of the contents of the stone box. Moroni never said where they were after that.

The Church would bury it like they buried the Cave that was found on the Hill Cumorah. A boy fell into it, so they quickly covered the entrance over with heavy steel plates and covered them over with soil, so that the cave couldn't easily be found. If I recall, it was just deemed a hazard.

@@lukev483 I was referring specifically to the Book of Mormon...the product of the alleged folk magic. As for the items you listed,...so you're just going to lump bonafide religious rites, covenants, and artifacts (all with Biblical and/or Near Eastern precedent), to that of spells and folk magic? Well ya know, Russell M. Nelson did an interview years ago wherein he demonstrated how Joseph put his head in the hat to "translate" from the seer stone. So the church has already confirmed the connection between Joseph's claimed "peepstone" practice and the production of the BOM.

@@lemjwp1756 "the folk magic/occult angle is hilarious when you realize the book produced there from is entirely about Jesus Christ and repentance, and not at all about anything remotely magical or occultic." Cardon’s Bom geography that changes based on passport is almost supported by Nephi actually. 😂 It’s a little different though, if an outside force takes over an area in the americas and is ruled by a foreign king you know it can’t be part of BoM geography, so, Canada looks pretty iffy I have to say: “But behold, this land, said God, shall be a land of thine inheritance, and the Gentiles shall be blessed upon the land. And this land shall be a land of liberty unto the Gentiles, and there shall be no kings upon the land, who shall raise up unto the Gentiles. And I will fortify this land against all other nations. And he that fighteth against Zion shall perish, saith God. For he that raiseth up a king against me shall perish, for I, the Lord, the king of heaven, will be their king, and I will be a light unto them forever, that hear my words. (2 Nephi 10:10-14). Note that central and South America are not ruled by foreign kings so they do remain in the running for being part of the lands.

There are two Cumorahs, the Mormon Cumorah (ALL Records) taken from Hill Shim, and Moroni's Cumorah - The plates used by Joseph Smith. The Mormon Cumorah is in Independence MO area (the Sacred Garden of Eden). This cave was made by Adam and the old patriarchs till Noah. There, the patriarchs kept ALL records. Mormon, using the Liahona went to the Land of Cumorah to deposit ALL the records of the Nephites in that cave. Also the Jaredites records are deposit in that man made cave. It is protect by Moroni to the present day. Mormon commands his son Moroni to go to the cave and take "only" the plates of Nephi and run for his dear life. He canoes from that area (Old Missouri river - higher level) to the Great Lakes area - all one body of water, and walk a small distance to the present Hill (Cumorah).
