Glad to hear she's not secretly awful. I was worried for a sec here...

i mean she did adopt a bunch of kids as a social project and and charged people to see the kids.. so she definitely wasn't perfect, and personally i'm confused they didn't go into that. She adopted those 11 kids to prove that multicultural peace is possible. she adopted mainly from french colonies/former french colonies too, and she raised them in varying religions just to prove a point.

omg I saw this preview and was devastated, "was bicon Josephine Baker actually a shithead?!" but no, and she was actually even more rad than I could have ever known. I'm proud to share the name Josephine with such a queer, antifascist queen.

I'm immensely relieved it was a positive ep, too! She's amazing. This episode made me want to paint her with her cheetah

Oh Clara Smith is a legend in her own right! She had her own club in Harlem and was known as the Queen of the Moaners because she supposedly had the sweetest voice in blues music at the time. Sadly, she died at just 41, though. She was some years older than Josephine and they met when then teenage Josephine started working for her.

Clara Smith, since you asked, was a blues/jazz singer who was one of Josephine's mentors, in addition to them being, ahem, gal pals. You can find her stuff on RU-vid if you search her name. She died very young (40) of a heart attack.

One of my favourite queer antifascist icons! Another one is Marlene Dietrich, absolute bicon as well.

An honestly incredible phenomenal woman, and a powerful reminder that queer people have always existed in history. We've been fighting in wars and protesting in streets for centuries past, and will continue to do so as long as injustice exists in this world. 🌠📚

The bit with Ms Josephine Baker walking her cheetah, with BOTH of them in high couture, is the most unfuckwithable energy I have ever heard.

This one was hard to click on, because I did not want to find out she was actually terrible. So glad she lived when moving cameras were a thing and we have footage of her dancing, it's hard to believe she was untrained, she's sooooo good.

I need some clarification: you have 1921 as the first date on the headstone but you say that she was dancing in Berlin and Paris nearly nude in the 1920's. Please tell me that this is just an error on your part.

She was an African American folk hero as of the 1980s but she was a hit in Paris and not well known in US during her life. 🌅

I know it's probably an editing nightmare, and likely not safe all the time, but would there be any chance the photos you're looking for could be put in the RU-vid video?

Great video! I'm wondering if in your research you came across the highly contested rumors that she may have been romantically involved with Frida Kahlo at some point. And if so, what you thought of it?

I'm french, here she is immediately associated with the image of her wearing the banana skirt. Obviously it is critiqued by anti-racist people, but not so much outside of their circles unfortunetely. I wonder if this image is also the first thing people see when talking about her elsewhere ?
