Do you like talking shit about people but only when they can’t fight back? Then Respect the Dead is the podcast for you! Every week, Hoots and Caelan Conrad talk about people who sucked and are now (thankfully) dead! We're dragging all our least favorite corpses - from religious bigots to miserly billionaires, petty actors and even unsafe theme parks! It’s kinda like if My favorite Murder and Behind the Bastards had a baby.
Regarding how they could implant the electrodes in the rabbits’ brains without causing them pain - The rabbits couldn’t be under general anesthesia cuz that would suppress brain function and render the procedure useless, BUT they could use local anesthesia on the scalp. This prevents the rabbits from feeling the actual penetration of the scalp and brain case, and once they’re in the brain it’s all Gucci cuz the brain has no nerves, only neurons! Edit: removed an extraneous “tbh”
48:26 Fun fact: "Gandon" is a very strong Russian insult (often used interchangeably with "mudak"), meaning someone who is both stupid *and* and asshole. I know the original suggestion was "Gan-don't", but honestly, to a Russian-speaker like me, "Mahatma Gandon" sounds absolutely perfect!
Dolphins aren’t going to speak English and it’s awful. Like, there’s got to be something better, it’s so unhinged. No way would they be able to! They do not have the physical means to produce a lot of the necessary sounds!
white supremacists always talk about fighting to protect women and children but women and children just seem to consistently come up as their victims......
the struggle with margaret lovatt is that like. dolphins are well known to cause drownings attempting to mate with extremely unwilling humans in the wild; there are videos of dolphins nearly dragging humans off the docks trying to mate with their legs out of nowhere so when she says it asnt somethign she sought out and that she viewed it at least partially as a means to an end bc he kept trying to mate with her i believe her.. but margaret was v much not against giving peter his daily helping hand. i believ she wasnt into it like that but she was a lot more accepting of it than most ppl would be.
note: this comment was made before hittignt hat part of the episode, and also is based on later interviews with her in whcih shed talk about him engaing in mating behaviors with her legs and feet. also wanna throw in my opinion that given the ability dolphins have to drown ppl in attempt to mate with them i figure that also probably made getting him to the elevator down to the other dolphins also pretty terrible and probably dangerous so it's one of those thigns where i can see why you would go that route but also Why Was She So Okay With It
The reference to a Dog Licence at 52 minutes was introduced in Victorian era for all owners of dogs to have licence for each dog, this was scrapped in 1987
the hitler random Japanese guy is so telling. It's not a random german guy, and it's not the Japanese emperor. it's just a random person depicted as the enemy
the thing about brain surgery is that you don't have any pain receptors in the brain itself. any pain would be through the skull & skin. there have been cases of people getting traumatic brain injury, such as through a nail gun, and it just starts as a minor headache because they can't feel all the damage that is actually happening in their actual gray matter
We actually have a History Moment involving that! It was about the doctor that found the part of the lady's brain that went sideways during her seizures, which made her smell burnt toast.
The references to and contrasts with L. Ron Hubbard were valuable. There's something about the general proliferation of pulp-fiction in that area that permanently captured so many people into crunchy woo-bubbles. The entire enterprise of the CIA and other organizations / connected operatives committing atrocity after atrocity hounding after proof positive of "mind control" and other psychic powers out of a weird and racist credulity that all the Orientalism-laced adventure novels they've ever read or heard about are actually real; it's difficult to fully grasp the continued damage being caused by peoples' desperate yearnings to experience real magic and their own specialness through it.
When I got up this morning, I didn't THINK I'd end up listening to a podcast that described a woman dressed as a clown wanking off a dolphin, yet here I am... :)
