I first heard this song when my dad brought home a Patty Loveless CD from the local flea market. I just remember how the beauitful melody and lyric chilled me to the core. I was just a kid with no history lessons (yet) on the hardships of my Appalachian ancestors. But boy this song ever open the door of curiosity.
This video was filmed on an old iPhone, in the back yard of the house my grandparents lived in for 50+ years, beside the creek that provided such beloved recreation and brought the nuisance of floods to our community of Eastern, Kentucky. I hope you all enjoy and feel the weight of the song, penned by the incrediblly talented Darrell Scott.

This is a wonderful song and your version is really genuine. I'm a Brit woman, but I love it, I've played it often. I got very interested in Appalachian history after watching Justified, and started reading up on it, after an American friend told me that while it's a drama, the context is pretty accurate. Josh, Wow! I just came across your cover while searching different versions. I don't need to look any further. Your voice is butter smooth and baritone rich. Your guitar playing is so natural and compliments your vocals perfectly. So glad I found this. I have always loved this song but after hearing your cover, I love it even more. Keep it up! You have the sound of many of my friends living back in the mountains. One in particular, who has passed, would go back in the holler and play and sing between the rock walls. His playing echoed down the holler like a giant megaphone. Good memories and chills just thinking back.

WOW !! That was incredible ! ......... From the Northeast ... Recently got back from a motorcycle trip to eastern Kentucky to visit Loretta Lynns Cabin at Butcher Holler. Went through coal country ..... have the greatest respect and admiration for the folks in those hills who helped build this country with the coal they mined. Terrible crime how those who actually built this country have been left behind ........ Such a great song sung and played perfectly ...... Thank You

I just heard this song about 3 days ago...someone had posted the Patty Loveless version on Facebook and I've listened to it about 40 times since then. And yes I'm in love with it. Anyway, just heard your version and I'm very impressed. Great, great job!
