Blood-spattered amalgam of two different samurai entries in the 6-part "Lone Wolf/Baby Cart" series, cobbled together with an '80s techno-music score by American producers for the drive-in trade. Voice dubbers include Sandra Bernhardt and Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and the Raiders. Has a remarkably avid following considering the superiority of the originals.

Take no notice of Josh and watch Shogun Assassin. It is an amazing experience full of brain jarring inconsistencies and messed-up wonders. It won't detract from watching the decreasingly enjoyable Baby Cart movies in the slightest. "I only remember the Shogun’s ninja hunted us wherever we go. And the bodies falling. And the blood."

Not to mention a brilliant soundtrack

I completely disagree that this film should be avoided. I love the Lone Wolf and Cub films in their original form, but Shogun Assassin I think still offers up a terrific cut of the first two films with some stellar music and an amusing and enjoyable dub. I think any true LW&C fans should be able to see it as the genuine tribute it is.

+Jeff Hocker Agreed. I think that SA should be thought of as more of a American companion piece to the original Japanese movies than a bastardization of them. It really has it's own cool grindhouse vibe. Prospective viewers should avoid the Amiego DVD version. It's an odd reconstruction of the film and the editing is... off, somehow. If at all possible, seek out the 80's VHS.

You're damn right, I love all of the films. Shogun Assassin is like a pre RU-vid showreel of sorts with WONDERFUL dubbing and an awesome soundtrack. The story is bastardised but still fun. A fitting tribute to an excellent series.

The Masters of Death are badass! They inspired the 3 Storms from Big Trouble in Little China and Raiden! I watched this as a kid when my dad brought home a bunch of movies and this was one of them. Still amazing even now!

No, his brother played Zatoichi. He did cameo in one of the Zatoichi movies, though.

I first saw this film in London back in 70s ( I'm old) it was called Lightening swords of death at one point.

Actually, Tomisaburo Wakayama's younger brother, Shintaro Katsu played Zatoichi and Hanzo the Razor.

Are you insane Josh? This movie is fantastic and deserves a watch. Those who deserve to get paid or whatever, those days are gone and you have to get beyond all that. Wonderful movie that chokes you up throughout the story. Further, this is a great introduction to the saga and tells an overview of the entire story. You're a sick person if you avoid this beautiful story.

Agreed. Idk if it was some weird form of reverse psychology to get people to go watch it or what, but this whole series is a flatout masterpiece of cinematography

The movie came out before the 80s. The first movie was the lighting sword's of death and that was 1971 when I first seen it now throughout the years it came in 6 episodes. I still have the original one from 71. I brought the 6 episodes awhile back but I can see the original one and it covers all 6. They broke it down to make more money 🤑🤑🤑💰. When I went to the movie theater to see it it costs 25 cent's or spend 75 cent's to see 3 movie's and this was at the Lowes theater downtown in Norfolk Virginia

Wakayama did not play Hanzo the Razor or Zatoichi. both the role of Hanzo and Zatoichi were played by Wakayama's younger brother Shintarô Katsu. furthermore both Hanzo the Razor and Lone Wolf & Cub started as manga titles, and were both created and written by the same author Kazuo Koike. as for Shogun Assassin, it is not just a simple re-cut of the first two Lone Wolf & Cub films. when the footage was edited together, an entire new script was written in English, that was only loosely based on the original story. they even used deaf lip readers to help write the dialog, so the English dub actually matches the movements of the Japanese actor's mouths. however it's basically a very watered down Americanized version of the story. ultimately though, the new story, the editing, the rewritten dubbed dialog, and the new music make Shogun Assassin a unique film in its own right. it's campier and has less depth than the original story, but it is still entertaining and worth watching. it's actually a good introduction for newcomers to the series and the samurai genre.

When the Bride In Kill Bill 2 watches this movie with her 4 year old daughter I was thinking ‘that’s fucked up. is that bad parenting right there? I wouldn’t let a little kid play GTA 5’

sorry, film expert...Shintarô Katsu played Zatoichi and Hanzo the Razor. Tomisaburô Wakayama (Katsu's brother) played the Mute Samurai and co-starred with Tony Curtis in Bad News Bears go to Japan.
