A late career triumph for sleepy-eyed noir favorite Robert Mitchum, who excels as a two-time loser trying to avoid more jail time in 1973 Boston. Gritty, realistic and at times shockingly violent, Peter Yates' crime drama never found the audience it deserves.

Some really grubby little east coast crime flicks came out around this time. This, THE SEVEN-UPS, THE TAKING OF PELHAM, ONE TWO THREE. I love them all.

The Seven-Ups for my money has the greatest car chase in film history!

I think Ben Affleck when he did the Boston crime film the town used a similar scene In that movie that was taken from the friends of Eddie Colye. In that movie the bank manager was taken hostage and he was blindfolded and told to count to 100 as he slowly walked to the banks of a river. When the town came out, and the female teller was also blindfolded and told to walk till she came to the end of a river bank.it is just a useless bit of trivia but leads me to think that the makers of the town respected and wanted to show an appreciation of another Boston crime classic.

In the last season of the show "Justified" the main character, Raylan Givens, takes an old paperback out of his desk drawer and hands it to his partner, telling him if he really wants to know how criminals think he should read it. It's "The Friends of Eddie Coyle".

Yea he also tells one of the baddies something like “you read friends of Eddie Coyle?” when their all at his wife’s house. Then he shoots them.

Yea. I just binged justified. He gives it to Gutterson. What was the reference, though? That bad dudes don't ever really have friends?

Richard Jordan was extremely underrated, just as you say.

THE TOWN certainly owes a lot to this film and its writer.

It sure does. I noticed that the writers of the town used a similar scene in their movie. This is just a useless bit of trivia. The town had a scene where the bank teller was taken hostage and released blindfolded and told to walk until she came to the water at the end of. the river bank. And I remembered in the friends of Eddie Colye their was a very similar scene except the blindfolded hostage this time was the male bank manager.but the geography the river bank area looked familiar.anyway just useless trivia but the writers of the town giving a another classic movie. a shout out.both were great but the town does owe a lot to the friends of Eddie coyle

Steven Keats character was the only dude that didn’t sell anyone else out. Best character in the movie.

In terms of pure acting i thought Richard Jordan was mesmerizing as this menacing slimey cop who walks a fine line between the law and criminality(for lack of a better binary).

This might be one of the best tours of Boston on film. This is a far better film than Reservoir Dogs.

Probably one reason Mitchum’s career was seen as being in downtown was because he got awful reviews for “Ryan’s Daughter”. Other than this, “Farewell, My Lovely” and “The Yakuza”, The 70’s were not very kind to Mitchum
@kamuelalee

Ryan's Daughter was a fantastic film and Mitchum gave a fine performance in that flick, like he does in most of his movies.
