It was my understanding that when the Terps left the ACC, FSU had opportunity to go also. They stayed and signed the GOR. The Terps paid 130 large, I think, to dip. I loved the ACC as a kid when things were “normal”. The ACC expansion experience changed everything. It does please me in an odd way after Buck was fouled and so much more that the Terps leaving helped create the GOR and that now UNC is going to turn its back on the conference where they ran amuck for decades, the All Carolina Conference.

Josh is right. Brett Yormark knows what he is doing. The SEC and Big Ten had better not get too comfortable. The only thing I disagree with Josh on is that the market, specifically the TV market, is not important as beer and soap ads are how the networks are getting all that money they are paying the SEC and B1G. Some of us saw this coming last year when people were saying the PAC still had a chance to stay together. Disney told ESPN to spend less money, so if they can get out of the ACC deal, they will, they certainly aren't giving them more money to stay together. The Big 12 stayed together because Fox said they wanted to maintain a presence in Texas and that is the only reason. We are going to end up with 2 conferences of 24 teams, we may have an interim period of 2 power conferences with around 20 teams each and a lesser Big 12 with 20 or schools, but eventually Fox and Friends will have all their eggs in the B1G basket and ESPN will have all their eggs in the SEC basket and everyone else will be AAC level conferences.

The people who say that FSU/Clemson moving to the Big 12 wouldn't help are clueless and do not have an open mind. FSU/Clemson to the Big 12 increases the media deal likely around to 10 to 15 million more per school per year, taking money from the ACC deal, would allow the Big 12 to increase its conference network, and increase ad revenue and a higher cut of the CFP payout. That pulls the Big 12 to within 10 to 15 million per school vs the B1G/SEC pushing the Big 12 to also 100+ million per year.

They may not want to expand, but you can bet your life savings on the fact they'd expand to keep the B12 from landing those high profile brands, because in the long run those 2 are aiming to be the only game in town. We literally saw this already with Oregon and Washington. Just when rumors started picking up about them possibly looking toward the B12 because the B10 wanted to stand pat, boom the B10 suddenly finds room for them. SEC only worries about those teams if they have Heisman level QB'S . Otherwise, they're just an annoyance in recruiting battles, which will take care of itself by keeping them out of the P2. How'd that work out for the conference's men's basketball prestige? When the dust settles, the most valuable brands will end up joining the Big Ten and SEC; those who missed the cut, while still offering strong markets, will join the Big 12. I believe the big 12 will survive, no matter how many teams leave the conference because they’re going to sign the contract with Apple that the Pac 12 refused to sign, they know how to survive
@TheLwaller09

The only expansion the Big10 is interested in any time soon is when Notre Dame figures out that the writing is on the wall and they're going to have to join a conference in football or they're not going to be able to play a competitive enough schedule to make the college football playoff. And if the ACC is cooked by that point, they'll be in the Big10 very very shortly. The only caveat will be that they will probably bring another team with them to maintain an even # of teams AND so they can preserve all their traditional rivals within the conference...and if you're doing the math in your head, the only traditional ND rival that is currently not in the Big10 as of now is...Stanford. The thinking the last couple years is that ND is going to be forced to join a conference in football or there isn't going to be enough tv $ or a schedule out there for them to compete especially as these conferences grow and end up playing 9 or 10 league games and less and less non-con games. They've always banked on the ACC if it comes to that, like the COVID year. But the ACC may not be around. Could they tuck tail and go to the Big12? Yeah, but I doubt that will happen. I don't believe their pride, or $ would let them settle for the Big12 when they could get into the Big10 where all their rivals and a bigger slice of TV $ is - and, the key nobody talks about too, Marcus Freeman is a Big10 guy. And if they keep having winning seasons and recruiting well, and it looks like he may be content to stay there for quite some time, he is going to have a major voice inside their decision when it comes to joining a conference. Outside of taking ND and their +1 (which is 90% likely to be Stanford), the Big10 doesn't view itself as a life raft for any of these other schools. It'll be interesting to see what happens if the Big10 and SEC don't want to take any of the ACC teams. Would they merge with the Big12?

I love good fiction. Good plot line in an imaginary story. Fox is paying the B1G a whopping $8b to broadcast its football games and it’s no longer 1984. In 2024, it’s all about the money. 💰 When the B1G added USC/UCLA it gave Fox entry into the lucrative California market and now Fox has their sights set firmly on the third largest state, Florida and, coupled with the fact that FSU is #7 in viewership (ND is #8) and is a national brand with three NC’s since ND last won one all the way back in 1989, makes FSU the top target 🎯. Viewership is the new currency of CFB and FSU is a cash machine. OTOH, Stanford is so bad and worthless that no conference would take them but the desperate ACC. Remember, the B1G had the chance to add Stanford when they picked up the other two California schools and refused. What has changed since then? Nothing.

@@tomdubay2225 Think about it.... FSU's football is dead whether it waits out the ACC GOR or lands in the BIG12, so why not a Hail Mary and hope for a P2 invite? It's not an ACC founder. It's not that invested in an academic association, other sports, etc. The BIG12 is the worst case, but the risk is worth it from the FSU perspective. In contrast, CLEMSON is a founder and much closer to the other founders. CLEMSON also is smart enough to know where it is in the priority list. As a result, CLEMSON has allied with UNC, which has agreed to a coattail to the SEC when it can and does move. So CLEMSON can remain in the ACC (which is better than the BIG12) during and after its litigation but has secured an SEC invite when UNC moves.

@@tomdubay2225 Nope... Most every (if not every) reporter and analyst have stated that UNC and UVA are the top expansion targets of both the SEC and B1G (ignoring ND). Accept that reality and then look at what FSU and CLEMSON are doing. FSU has publicly stated that it has to get Tier 1 revenue by a certain date to remain competitive. That is an admission of desperation. The SEC sees CLEMSON/FSU as disposable. The B1G would have preferred WASH/ORE stay in a surviving PAC (or even BIG12) until a later revisit, so FSU may be forced to simmer in the BIG12. The pivotal schools are ND, UVA & UNC. ND likely as secured the ACC only losing the 3 objectors and getting a renewal to cover the near future. UNC has agreed to go SEC with CLEMSON, but neither can move until UNC can. UVA is in limbo. The B1G wants ND & UNC, so it may not expand again until UNC is either secured or lost ~or~ ND somehow breaks loose. It will always leave slots open for both until. FSU could just be hoping that the B1G will take just on the risk that the SEC may change its mind on same.

FSU and Clemson - as the premier football powers in the conference - have landed a fatal blow on the ACC. No matter what ends up transpiring with the litigations (and how long they take), it’s safe to say both will end up in the P2 and remain competitive power programs in the new world order. On a related note, it is sad to watch the “Tobacco Road” heritage diminish before our very eyes. It’s truly one of the more unfortunate casualties of the evolving college football power structure. The harsh truth is that basketball and other revenue sports do not have the mass to counterbalance the remarkable and ever-growing value of college football. Programs like UNC, Duke, Kansas and others will in all likelihood take on tier 2 status in the coming P2 framework. While the P2 may end up accommodating some of these programs, they will only serve as chum to the alphas in both the SEC and B1G. What remains to be seen is how basketball and other sports fare within the coming landscape. The internal struggles and financial problems in Chapel Hill make this all the more evident.

The Big Ten tv contract has built-in increases to it in the case of adding new members so that the current members don't lose money doing it. So that isn't a factor. All that matters is whether the new addition adds enough revenue to pay for themselves to the networks. With one exception, there's zero chance the Big Ten doesn't add North Carolina if they come available, no matter what the numbers for the networks or athletic programs say. They bring several hundreds of millions to the Big Ten collectve in other areas that have nothing to do with sports.

Well Wa/Or were added last year at half shares, but that wasn't anything that was built into the media deal. The only school listed in the B1G media deals escalation clause is Notre Dame. Any other school that's wants to be added would need Fox to bump up the media deal. Then they would need the conference school Presidents vote to expand. Now since Wa/Or only got half shares, they will have no interest adding other schools at higher shares than they are getting obviously and I'm going to assume the Cali schools would vote with them.

First off, the only school named in the B1G media deals escalation clause is Notre Dame. Any other school would need Fox to bump up the current deal. The reason we know this, is because they just did it last year with Wa/Or and they got half shares till the next deal. Don't expect anything more than that, because obviously both those schools and the Cali schools would vote no on anything higher than half shares. ACC schools might have better luck with the SEC/ESPN, but I wouldn't be surprised if they capped shares at half as well.

Considerring everything going on I would love to see 3 24teem conferences. Each with 4- 6 team regionaly relevent divisions. 5 divional games, 6 non divisional conference games, so tha every three years you play everybody in the conferences. 16 team play-off with12 divional/(regional) champs+4 teamwildcard playoff division for the four best non divional champ teams. The conference championship included in playof. Every game matters. Each conference negotiates pay for there conference and conference championship game tv contracts. Conferences which place more wild card teams get more money. This restores regional rivalries, increases relevant games, without increasing number of games played. This could help with nil, transfer portal, watchability of games, andstabalize the sport that we love, without removing the things that made it great, or overlyburdanning players eith too many games or segragating to many teams out of the big picture. With 3 conferences the mony should be good. The group of 5 would need there own playoff. L

Also, to the ESPN will drop them idiots, remember that ESPN needs content to fill there networks and new streaming platform. If they drop the ACC just because FSU and Clemson are in the Big 12, how does ESPN replace the ACC basketball content? With Sunbelt basketball?
