College Football's rivalry week is always a circle event for sports fans and on Late Kick Live Ep 244 Josh Pate took a viewer question about which rivalry games would make up his top 5 list. Michigan vs Ohio State landed at number 1 due to the national relevance of each brand and the magnitude of the game today and throughout history. The Iron Bowl featuring Alabama vs Auburn was a close second for the same reasons. From there a couple of annual neutral site rivalry matchups checked in as we saw Oklahoma vs Texas in the Red River Shootout and UGA vs Florida in the WLOCP. A surprise submission landed in the 5th spot as Josh's affinity for the Floyd Of Rosedale trophy grabbed Minnesota vs Iowa a surprise spot in the rankings. The Cocktail Party is a unique experience. I would say it's like Red River, but with less mutual respect lol. It's like two adult brothers getting into a fist fight. I'm biased. I want UGA to win every single game, but when we loose one it makes the next game that much better. It was almost worth the loss in 2020 just to hear Kirby's "I wanna break em" speech haha.

One reason why the Red River shootout is so prominent to me personally is because many of the players that go to OU and Texas come out of Highschools in Texas, so a lot of the players know each other even back from HS. The tradition runs deep.

@Atx512fool I live in Oklahoma but am not a fan of any Oklahoma team. So, from a more objective viewpoint, I don't think it's number one. They aren't close enough. You don't run into Texas fans everywhere here. With something like Auburn-Alabama, you're working with fans of the other team, going to school with them, etc. Just my two cents.

Army vs. Navy Alabama vs. Auburn Michigan vs. Ohio State Texas vs. Oklahoma The problem is it's hard to pick a 5th best rivalry. Maybe Florida vs. Georgia? Oregon vs. Oregon State? Washington vs. Washington State? Iowa vs. Iowa State? Clemson vs. South Carolina? Auburn vs. Georgia? Alabama vs. LSU? Notre Dame vs. USC? Cal vs. Stanford? Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State? Michigan vs. Michigan State? Florida vs. Florida State? Wisconsin vs. Minnesota? Miami vs. Florida State? So many good rivalries that are still going. But maybe the 5th best rivalry is a rivalry we are missing. I throw in these two... Notre Dame vs. Michigan Texas vs. Texas A&M Those games were so good! And full of angst against each other. Miami vs FL state- I don care care where you put it but I thought it deserved a spot on the top 5 list- it’s use to have natl champ implications( but the same could be said about other rilvaries on the list) Plus you were watching 10-15 top picks rds 1-3 in the nfl draft. I guess this is more of a historic ranking because Alabama/Auburn is only good a few times a decade. I think OU/TX and Florida/Georgia are consistently better than that rivalry. Michigan/Ohio State and OU/TX are tied for 1 and 2 for me. Alabama needs a national brand opponent in a regular season game, hell as of late I view Alabama's rivalry game as Texas A&M.

I actually like your list but if trophies were a criteria then I would have to go with either Paul Bunyan's axe or the Paul Bunyan trophy over the pig but keep up the excellent work Josh. I've seen games where the winning school will run over and grab a axe, a boot(or whatever) after the game. That seems like something from the Big 10. Being a Georgia alum, we have never really thought about playing for a trophy(or anything like that). I think that at one time there was actually something that went to the winner of the Georgia Georgia Tech game. I don't think either school cared about it though

Sorry Josh, your reasoning for picking Michigan vs Ohio State is not sufficient. Auburn is more of a regional name but the Iron Bowl itself is known around the country as the the most intense rivalry in sports not just in the south which make your point but AROUND THE NATION! The best rivalries have a slobs vs. snobs aspect to them. Michigan alumni heap scorn on OSU as academically inferior. Alabama fans revel in the nobility of Bear Bryant, and deride the cow college on the Georgia border. Other slobs vs. snobs: Cal-Stanford, North Carolina-Duke. Army-Navy? A little? Harvard-Yale is moderate snobs vs. super snobs.

I think the Red River shootout is number 1. They have an awesome trophy, play in the most unique setting in all of college sports, they've played each other for an exceptionally long time, it's a border rivalry, the fanbases truly hate each other, and it's more consistently a close game year after year compared to the Iron bowl or the Game.

I think that is true of many big rivalries. Having a magical season ruined by your rival, especially on the last Saturday of the season is the worst thing in the world. You have to sit in that stink for a year before it can be fixed. And when John Cooper was the coach, you had to get used to the stink.

Not saying they aren’t good games but we know bama gonna whoop auburn 9/10, we know Georgia as of recently is gonna best florida 9/10, same for OSU Vs Michigan. OU v Texas is 50/50 every year regardless. Every OU fan and Texas fan goes in that game in the middle of the season knowing it could end their title hopes EARLY.

BTW some rivalries have kinda played themselves out......Georgia and Georgia Tech......Since Tech left the SEC, Georgia has won 75% of the games played. It can't really be called a rivalry anymore...I think Alabama and Auburn are danger of falling off the rivalry list. I mean you have traditional rivalries..but who really wants to buy a ticket to Army/Navy, Havard/Yale

I think Georgia Tech aggressively destroyed their incredible football program after they left the SEC. They have so many accolades even in recent history to only be an ACC also ran right who wears RUSSEL athletic. They’re not like Tulane who couldn’t afford to keep up with the rest of the SEC it doesn’t make sense

But still the mistake of Dodd's life was leaving the SEC over that feud with Bryant. Even in 1963 they should have seen that would lead to disaster. The President of the University (or someone in power) should have stopped it.

How is this controversial? This is just Power 5 rivalries. You simply picked the biggest programs in the biggest conferences. Anyone could have come up with this list. If I had asked the homeless guy on the corner with the "Will Work For Food. God Bless," he's have come up with your list. There are dozens of these types of videos on youtube with the same games... the only difference may be the specific order of the rivalries.

I think its #1, Michigan/Ohio State and Alabama/Auburn were actually decent games this year and they still got topped by OU/TX. I think people hold that rivalry back because TX has lacked as of late , kind of like Michigan in that rivalry, but OU/TX is still a good game every year.

we agreed on 4 out of 5. I would have never even thought of Iowa-Minnesota. maybe it's because all the other games usually have some title implications. I would have suggested USC-Notre Dame.

Iowa vs. Minnesota? Wasn't even on my radar. How can you not pick Army vs. Navy though? I don't care if it's never with playoff implications in mind. It's America's Game. It has its own weekend all to itself. The jets and helicopters fly overhead. The President is there every year. And it's football in its purest and raw form. Not to mention they've played each other a million times it seems. The tradition is unmatched. It's classic.

Michigan vs Michigan State should be in the top 5 instead of Iowa vs Minnesota imo. Most heated instate rivalry in the country, due to Michigan trying to keep MSU from joining the Big Ten and a host of other things along the way.

As a Sooner fan I'm a little biased but the OU/Texas rivalry is the best. 1. It's played on a neutral field every year. 2. It's not played during the rivalry week but instead is played during the Texas State Fair. 3. Not only is a Golden Hat Trophy given out but the losing state's governor has to give the other governor meat until the next Red River game. 4. It's a real rivalry because it all started when both Oklahoma and Texas were fighting over who owned the Red River. 5. Both schools ROTC programs will run to the Cotton Bowl and have a scrimmage football game. 6. You never know who is going to win. 7. It's the game that can make or break a team's season. 8. The last 2 meetings have been epic and high scoring. 9. The game like I said is played on a neutral playing site and it's halfway between both campuses. The stadium is also divided by the 50 year line. 10. It's watched by millions and never disappoints.

You can when 3 of those "top 6" brands haven't won shit in 2 decades. Auburn has played for 2 NCs and won one since the last time any of those 3 teams even played for the NC.

@@darthsaban8665 texas won in 2002 and 2005 Ohio state won in 2014 I believe and Oklahoma has held several playoff spots the last decade and Michigan well you got me with Michigan but all the other teams have been really good the last two decades. You take that into consideration and then you take into consideration the historical part of it and it's not even a debate Oklahoma Texas 2nd and Ohio state Michigan 1st and then you can put Alabama auburn

@@zoomdoof6107 Texas didn't win in 2002....Ohio St did. So its been 17 years since Texas won. 22 years since Oklahoma won, and 25 years since Michigan won the NC. Auburn went 13-0 in 2004, 14-0 and won the NC in 2010, and came within 3 points of winning it again in 2013. Auburn has as many Natties as the entire Big 10 outside of Ohio St in the last 50 years. Oklahoma is 0-4 in the Playoff, and 3 of those games were embarrassing. Michigan has 1 Playoff appearance and they wwre blown out by halftime. Auburn also plays in the SEC, which is a different animal altogether as Oklahoma and Texas are about to find out. I'm not an Auburn fan, but nobody could objectively say that any of those 3 teams have been more relevant nationally than Auburn has in the last 20 years. Auburn also has a significantly better record against Alabama over the last 20 years than Michigan or Texas has against Ohio St and Oklahoma. Shouldn't a rivalry involve both teams winning occasionally? By that standard, Michigan and Ohio St barely even qualifies anymore

I'm a Buckeyes fan so of course tOhioState vs michigan. But Montana vs Montana ST is just a crazy means alot. It's a big deal in the northwest. Call of the wild.

Georgia Florida in Jacksonville...went for the first time last season. I was not really impressed at all. I mean yeah, if you have a half million dollar motor home, can rent property up in Jekyll Island then yeah for you that's the cocktail party. If you are just an average person who has scored a ticket, got several nights in a cheap hotel for the game......Well.......To start with it's almost impossible to find parking at the game and when you do find it, it can be $50+. Okay you are at the game.......very, very few watering holes around......The few that are within a half mile of the stadium are so covered up that you can't even get in. So much for getting a cocktail......Just going there increased my opinion that the game should be home and home

Unc-NC State is a very brutal rivalry. People are taken out of the stadiums every year due to fist fights among State and Carolina fans.
