Here is another gem from my VHS archives. Our gospel Queen Mahalia Jackson as she appeared in 1957 singing on the Nat King Cole show. Listen to that voice so pure and powerful.
I'm glad she lived in a time when recording technology existed, so that we don't have to content ourselves with hearing tales of her performances, and being left to imagine what she sounded like. How fortunate we are to have the evidence readily available to us. That woman had one heck of a voice, and knew how to use it.
My Great Grandma used to play her musics almost everyday and she didn't like English speaking songs or musics because it wasn't her native tongue and she didn't know English... Out of curiousity, one day I asked her why she like Mahalia so musch she said, "She sing with such passion, I don't understand English but the passion in her voice interprets!" May the Sweet Lord bless you Miss Mahalia,... I miss you so much Grandma, Aloha vau ia oe Makua'hine O Hawai'i nei...
She wasn't the best gospel singer in the world at that time. She was the best singer, period. Her voice had limitless power and range and she used it to full effect.
DO YOU KNOW THE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF JERICOAH? IF NO, its really worthy checking it out in the Bible, one of the most amazing stories of Faith and hard work.
Mahalia never sang R&R in her life. She was a consistent gospel singer all her life. She did sing a bit with Duke Ellington, but nothing inconsistent with her vocation as a gospel singer. The song that best desribe her saintly life is I'M GONNA LIVE THE LIFE I SING ABOUT IN MY SONGS. You are still singing for the Lord, sister. You will never be forgotten.
Now this is amazing. I've been listening to her since birth, I'm now 37. She had so heart and soul with that voice, I'm from New Orleans and I went to her grave. To me that was an honor. I bet you're up in heaven singing away...
I don't care about the biblical debates. Mahalia Jackson is the greatest singer ever and a national treasure. Just listen to this and that is self-evident.
Nat King Cole was televised without any sponsors - no commercials b/c no one would sponsor his show. Yet he was so good, and so beloved he had a weekly show anyway. Go figure that out. Why no one would sponsor his tv show.
Fear of boycott. Would've been funny if a really huge, huge corporation had sponsored him just for the heck of it, but as Lucky 1038 says, it's all about the dough.
Elvis Presley was so moved by her voice that he sang it himself. If Nat and Elvis were that moved by Mahalia Jackson, then that says a lot. The Queen? No question.
and so is mine too...I was at the hospital not knowing what to name my son until the nurse came for the second time and she said better think of something because next time I come will be the last time so you can get discharge and go home you gotta name your son. so I said Lord in your name I pray help me name my son Joshua it is Joshua is his name. I'm a very spiritual person although I dont know much about the Bible.
one thing i notice about the older singers, they could hit and note, hold it, stretch it out..one reason I think todays singers are less skilled. Today they feel like they have to go up and down a scale...what a pleasure to hear her hit that last note.
Being a Tenn Native very proud of our Native Daughter she and Aretha ate from Tenn. Greetings from Chicago I got Married in her Church . Gods Blessings to all.
this is my mom's most favorite singer eva n trust she gat dat same voice, but she didn't get to use it at the time she wanted to, but in the will of God she will and the anointing gon cause mountains to come down n jehovah will get the glory
The need to make a movie of her life and Queen Latifah show be the one to play her. God Bless Mahalia Jackson Praise be the day when she is alive again in the Kingdom of God
I agree with you that there is so many wonderfully talented performers from all styles of music past and present whose work is represented here on RU-vid. Thanks for viewing and posting your thoughtful comment!
Wow I Remember We Had To Sing This Song While Going To Vacation Bible School Thank You Jesus God Continue To Bless And Yes She's In A Much Beautiful Place With A Brand New Body Jumping For Joy Celebrating
I searched up this song because I found out that the sugar crisp jingle from the old commercials was based off of this song. and listening to this song it really does sound like the whole "can't get enough of that sugar crisp" song
Mahalia Jackson: Joshua Went (Fit) The Battle Of Jericho. Excellent. Heart Felt. The Singing Mahalia with Imitation Of Life and Natalie Wood is excellent. William Jerry Guthrie
My Sunday school teacher, Ms. Harris sung this song for the first I’ve ever heard it on the piano. Black history carried down through history is so amazing!!! I’m still influenced by it In 2019!
Wow!!! Loved it and I am certain those that disliked it was just because they need glasses and missed the right button. How could you not enjoy that powerful voice and message.
I seem to recall my Father (who was an Operatic Baratone who could sing Tenor...) telling me that this woman was The one great Black Gospel Singer that had a real voice who didn't scream.
