I have to admit I've been a hardcore Journey fan for years and would only listen to Steve Perry as their lead singer. I couldn't bring myself to listen to Steve Augeri and when Arnel joined the band, I wouldn't listen to him either. Then just the other day my boyfriend told me he watched a video of Arnel singing with Journey was blown away. He urged me to give Arnel a chance and I just did. I feel like such an asshole for being so close minded. Arnel is incredible. He's energetic and charismatic and sounds almost exactly like Steve Perry except that he adds a little Arnel to it and makes it his own. While listening to this video I read about his past and it made it even more evident to me why he belongs in the band and why he deserves it. He's gone through so much pain and tragedy to get where he is now. If Journey tours again and comes to Milwaukee, I'll be first in line to buy tickets. My mind is completely changed. I'm sorry Arnel. I was wrong about you. You are amazing!
Have you watched their documentary, Don't Stop Believin' Everyman's Journey? He's so adorable, and humble indeed. They are touring now until September. :D
MarleneAngel09 I just want to THANK YOU for being honest. There was no doubt that Steve Perry brought success to Journey in the past. Arnel was hired to fill SP's shoes and was not easy to do. He tried his best to make the audience happy and also to carry the torch for the Journey band...The new generations will be singing the Journey songs for many more years.
You have a very thoightful boyfriend. He love you very much. I pray for the womderdul years that you will be together. Thank you for the kind words for Arnel. Take care.
You are now a true fan of music... and can start clearly HEARING beautiful musical notes vocally chorded from the heart and the soul, instead of mainly LOOKING visually at the face of a singer. But everybody knows that without SP, there will be no AP.
Steve Perry is so good with this song, but we can't hear him sing like this again. Aren't you glad another guy who sing the song like the way it used to be.Good job Arnel what a powerful voice there.!!!
That is what Neil was looking for when he found him, someone that can sound like the 80s Steve, I willing to bet Steve Perry doesn't sound like this in 2017 but it would be nice if they perform together this year at RR Hall of Fame, and here him sing
David Bronze //That's a good thinking David... We have the Musicians of J O U R N E Y..., and Arnel Pineda..., is tryin' to put his very best.... at this point..., our beloved Steve Perry is remarkable but he may need to prioritize his health condition..../Libra'67
Of course Perry wont sound like the old Perry of his youth, Arnel is only 52 and he doesnt sound like he sounded when he first started. Perry is 71 and is still sounding good at his age now but, no he will never reach those heights again but he is and always will be the best for me.
I agree Chris , Steve has a one of a kind voice and this is as close as we will ever get to Steve, and this young man is as close as were ever gonna get , he is absolutely sensational . My hat is off to him
Chris Noble his fucking amazing i was there..i like this guy so much his much better than the original he got Pipes..i like steve and im a big fan but if i choose between them i would rather pick this dude..that high note is extremely insane..my ticket is worth..my goodness thank god they find this guy..i purchase his album already in big fan of him already though we can download to itunes but i want cds
Arnel Pineda , is a fan who had a great opportunity to sing in the band he loves, has the same essence and power Perry , and feeling a great interpreter amazing and happy to see him sing.
@@frankiemoore531 steve has a thinner voice. Arnel can hit the high notes but his notes are powerful, almost operatic. Steve in his prime could not sing it as powerfully as Arnel.
Incredible performance. This guy is the real deal. I know Steve Perry wrote a lot of the bands hits, but its great to see this guy carry the torch and perform these wonderful tunes.
what I like about "Journey Improved" is they are having FUN ... Pineda brought a big dose of humility to this iconic band. Having been to the mountain with Perry as the front man they fell to the valley when he left. They saw some lean years which were leading to the inevitable death of the franchise when Schon miraculously found Pineda on YT (thank you *bowing* to YT). Rising from the slums of the Philippines eking out a living in bit gigs in Asia & the Pacific Islands this was a Cinderella story for him and a MAJOR lesson to the band members that not everyone is as richly blessed as they have been.... I think they saw this as a true "second chance" something rockers who have fallen from grace rarely get. Now their stage presence is full of laughter, big smiles, FUN they are having fun and a LOT of that fun is watching how much Pineda enjoys himself. Pineda was born for that moment when the stars aligned and God reached down from heaven with Schon's email and I really believe this new improved Journey recognizes it as divine intervention. They have found such joy "teaching" Pineda to perform - to be a stage presence, teaching him the riffs and lyrics to their tremendous repertoire of music. After all, all he had played was clubs - with tiny stages and it's his ROLE with Journey to fill that stage up - instrumentalist are stationary and these stages are enormous. Pineda had to learn all this and in a relatively short time. Every single band member knew Pineda had to succeed, he WAS the future of the band. I think all of this - the whole package, changed this seriously rockin' band for the better. This somewhat aging yet "new improved" franchise will last as long as Pineda does.
Really well said and beautifully written. I agree 150%. When each one saw such humility in such a brilliant artist that really DID just want to perform for the joy of performing I think it really DID change each of the band members in epic ways... they -- and WE -- are better for having met or glimpsed the life of Pineda.-- being touched by him. Great post.
The great thing about this new singer/situation...If Journey ever finally decides to hang it up and retire...This kid will have an even brighter future!
He'd been singing in cover bands for at least 15 years before Journey found him on RU-vid. His story really is amazing. There's a documentary about it. But yeah... He was 40 then.
Matt Trujillo Todd Rundgren was 64 when he did the Amsterdam Metropole Orkest concert (on RU-vid) in 2012. If you take care of your pipes, you can still get it done. Jagger did; McCartney didn't.
You should remember that Steve Perry was not original singer of Journey!?! Rollie and Fleischman sang in the band before Perry joined. I generally like Arnel but he sounds so exactly like Perry that one cannot help to wonder if he is more impersonator than singer in his own right!?
I honestly can't understand people anymore. 1st off this guy KICKS SOME SERIOUS ASS and belts out these songs with pure emotion! If a band replaces a singer with someone who doesn't sound quite like the original they get criticized. In this case, this dude sounds BETTER than The Great Steve Perry and he gets criticized for it. That's right, I said BETTER!!! Go and watch videos of Perry LIVE in his prime, and he NEVER sounded this good. His voice was always breaking. I loved JOURNEY then and I love JOURNEY now!!
No he isn't better. He is good and he can hit the high notes and he's right in tune but Steve had just an incredible tone (you may not even understand what I mean by that if you are not a singer. I am a pro singer) ...very smokey rich voice. Arnel does not have that. He is not Steve but since Steve left...he is the next best thing. Philippinos love their karaoke and that is what Arnel was... a karaoke singer in his country...and he perfected singing like Steve buy mimicing him...which led to his new career. Steve is making a come back finally...but at 69 years old and being away from performing and "stretching" his vocal cords to hit the extremely high notes he used to....I doubt he will be able to do what he used to do but no one had his voice. Not even Arnel.
Arnel brought back that amazing sound to the band, the idea of bringing a guy from too far....Neal, Steve and Jonathan you guys did a great job finding this GODGIFTED VOICE........AWESOME!!!!
First time I heard this song on the radio I was in shock, and turned up the volume. I wondered "What god-like thing created this fucking masterpiece!?"
Everyone is on and on that is he not Steve Perry. First of all, Journey songs are INCREDIBLY hard to sing, Steve is now 65... vocally I don't believe he could still pull it off. Arnel is in his 40's and a strong vocalist and a Bad-Ass one at that. Let's all consider that...
@@austinftw10 lol. Tell that to journey. They chose Arnel for a reason. While you uneducated talentless shitstains stay in the comment section crying like pathetic dumbasses
No matter how good of a singer you are, you just don't walk into a bar on Karaoke night and walk away with it all tryin' to do this song. Period. This song just demands respect. It requires vocal performance. Arnel's is the man.
He never lipsyncs brother... At one point he had to switch mics from wireless to wired after a faulty connection and if there were any lipping it should have surfaced. Arnel has aged vocally though. But what can you expect from a 50 year old in 2017 singing a hit in 1982, when Perry was still in his late 20s/early 30s
I remember singing this while stocking at a store I used to work at...believe it or not (your choice) but when I sang the chorus I let my soul scream and a couple people noticed me and were like damn that was about how he did it...like I said believe it or not
This guy was godsent. To match a singer with a voice ths close is a one in a million,no once ina billion match. I like Journey. I have always liked journey and Arnel Pineda is a plus in my book.
I have listened to this more times than i can imagine..loving every moment of this song.... Clearly music has no barrier. If you have it, you have it, no matter your race creed religion. Because music touches deeper than race creed religion...touches the human heart itself...and it heals...Iloveu arnel!
this is an absolutely fantastic performance. And it's not even Arnel's best. There are plenty of other live recordings, some of them more recent than this, where he hits all the high notes 100%. He's got the pipes.
I am extremely grateful to Journey that you still let me enjoy my all time favorite song with the amazingly renovated voice. I've been Journey's fan since I was college student, and I am 50 now.Thank you for your undying music and performance
What makes this video so great is the camera is focused on all the band members. Usually, it is at least 75% just on the singer. Good to see the rest of the band as well.
I grew up with Steve Perry/Journey my whole life and I am probably older than most people on here. I love Steve Perry, but I love Arnel equally as much! I never thought it was a bad thing when they found a new singer, they can't go on without a singer at all, can they? I think Arnel is absolutely amazing, incredible, charismatic, high energy and TALENTED beyond belief and I absolutely love him!!!! People LIVE to be negative and always look for hate over love every time. Journey ROCKS! DONE!
All we have is just a memory of Perry...we will not be able to listen to him live....Arnel is the reality now...we can see him on the stage singing Perry's songs, he might be a clone or copycat but nobody can do what he's doing, he is the closest singer to Perry, remember, it took Neal Schon years before they have found a replacement in the person of Arnel..... Steve Perry fans just listen to your DVD at home and enjoy the memories, for the meantime the rest of Journey can go on living entertaining people on stage!!! Sabe?
I was there in 1983 for the Journey Frontiers tour. Saw the show in Dallas and LA. The old guys are actually playing better now than they did then. They're tighter and crisper. In hindsight, the fractures in the band were already taking their toll when I saw them then. The vocals are every bit as good in this video as they were then. A little different, maybe a little earthier, but that's not a bad thing for a live show. If I want to listen to the album, I'll just put it on the turntable. Yes, I still have all my old Journey LPs, from the original Journey to Raised on Radio. Anyway, I love Steve Perry, but I'm perfectly happy with Arnel as the new voice of Journey. He brings Steve with a twist, and that's fun in its own right.
all the past singers are amazing, and Arnel Pineda has an amazing voice he is a very great performer, all the haters need to know that Arnel Pineda is a very talented vocalist,i dont know why people dont like him???
LOVE ARNEL!! I think he sounds fantastic! I wouldn't think twice about seeing him in concert and after watching his story I respect him and I am in awe of him even more
i am a true Steve Perry fan. I love the man and his voice. But I have to say, after seeing Journey in concert with Arnel- they were so incredible!! You CAN NOT tell the difference. There are haters out there- ignore them. this man is awesome- just as steve was. Steve you lost out. period.
Arnel is a super nice guy that sings his heart out. He is as much a Steve Perry fan as anyone else. He has an opportunity to make alot of Journey fans happy and he does.
In todays generation, they doesn't know whos the original. what he looks. generation today, when they hear the journeys songs, it's the face of Arnel Pineda that comes to their minds. for them, it's Arnel is the original because he is the one who is singing the journeys songs now that they have witnessed and appreciated.
