I have been blessed to see Journey with Steve Perry, Steve Augeri & Arnel Pineda. I love all the incarnations of the band. Each of these amazing vocalists has touched my life & heart in different ways. Neal’s signature guitar is unmistakable. I got to see him & the band in February 2024 front row right in front of Neal. It was a powerful moment & one I will remember forever. Having lost to my father in October 2023 , it was the first time I felt any joy & oh what joy it was. Many people around me, total strangers, remarked about it after the show. So thank you Journey for helping me perhaps begin to heal just a little.
No matter how many Steve Perry replacements Journey had. Nobody had that soul piercing voice like Steve Perry . Love him. He’s irreplaceable !🙏🏻❤️💕💗🥰😘😊
In a crazy coincidence, sad coincidence Prince had the same hip problem and decision. His decision not to have surgery led to other problems that ultimately took the life of a great musical Icon RIP Prince!!!
A little fact check here Journey did not have to cancel any shows, management tried to add more shows without Steve's consent. Perry showed up even if he was dragging himself onto that stage he showed up until trial of Fire and he was injured before that tour even took place. So the pictures of canceled shows didn't have anything to do with this
Well funny how Neil had no problem doing a ballad with Bad English but gave Perry shit about ballads. And those ballads totally changed the trajectory of Journey. Did SP have demons? Sure. But not hard to feel like an outsider if the founding member treats you like crap. 🤷♂️
I listen to CD ‘s of this incredible band. Amazing musicians. I am now 65 . Journey is one of my favorites . They really put on a great show with amazing lighting , special effects and sound . They are truely one of the greatest Rock and Roll Bands
Steve Perry is great and all that good stuff! I grew up influenced by Journey & other great rock bands. Journey was a big one! I emulated Perry trying to become a singer. I didn't come close to being a decent enough vocalist but I tried with a few different bands. No doubt Perry was a intricate part of the band and still is but DAMN if he isn't a "home wrecker!" Seems he enjoyed ruffling some feathers! They made hit song after hit song! Thing is they very well may have outdone themselves without having to discard long time original Journey band members. I'm sure Perry is a great man. Maybe it was his ambition that caused him to take such dramatic measures. I did hear him say on one of his interviews that if he could do it all over again he wouldn't have made some of the moves he seems to now regret. We're all human and we all have regrets. Who the hell knows but damn they created some great stuff to listen too since my teens to the present! That's 35 years of hearing Journey on the frequent. One the radio and on my phone. Can't "ESCAPE" Journey! No pun intended. I guess for that, I am grateful!
They'll be celebrating 50 years. I hope they can convince 'The Voice' Steve Perry to at least attend, even if he doesn't sing, just to be in the audience
Steve can always sing but journey is nothing without Steve. I would pay anything to hear Steve but would never pay any mind to Journey without Steve. ❤
We felt like a family Perry was right in so many words " Don't crush the name Journey like a stone" How to this day was Perry replaced. Start Bad English like they did and Retire Journey. Beatles Lasted what 6-9 years?? I didn't see their music Disappear!!
It's amazing how people don't see things properly because they're in the thick of it Street Talk was Steve being Steve. Not Steve trying to imitate Journey. Neal's voice is not known as a lead vocalist and not associated with the sound of a band. I'm shocked Neal's perception of Street Talk was something negative...unless ..of course..his comments come from jealousy.
It sucks that steve quit when the band was doing so good but he and the band did what was needed to grow the band. When a band gets mainstream success there is a 4 year window in the spotlight if ur lucky and if the band makes it past 4 years in the mainstream spotlight the band is on the way to be one of the massive bands that can sell out arenas so you keep going hard with the band because as soon as the band stops that’s where the legacy ends and nostalgia starts. If they stopped earlier the band wouldn’t have built up to the level where they can still sell arenas today. It’s just too bad they didn’t hang on for good 5 more years when the 80’s music really died out we missed out on a few more great albums.
They 2 albums before Steve came along where it would seem Neal was singing and playing lead guitar but they were good though but they were underated they needed a new singer and new sound Neal came from Santana and some of that style got incorporated into those first 2 albums but they needed there own sound I love journey But I only like the Steve perry stuff
SP should’ve made the call to Herbie Herbert he was the one that wanted him gone. Leave Journey alone for only when SP wants it. I don’t blame them for moving on. And truth is SP had no desire to tour They were obligated by contract to put another record out for the label. He did his part and left and made a hell of a deal, he makes bank off the band touring.. The band is still great live.
Steve's whining is the best part of this doc. So self-absorbed. You think that failure after failure and a couple of years repairing turkey coops would give one some perspective and a sense of gratitude. But nope! Whaaaa!
This was a hatchet job designed to make Journey look good at Steve's expense. He's never had a bad word to say about them, and even apologized for his mistakes, they never have. That's why he thanked his lawyer at the R&R HOF. BTW, they lied when they said he was fully recovered, those interviews showed him thin, pale, and hiding the base of his neck where he has a lot of scars. He was also walking with a cane and his voice was weak and whispery. He was spotted with the cane by some autograph seekers out side the building that day. He also had busied himself in a new career working on movie soundtracks at that time. The first one was Monster, a big success. He is still friends with Patty Jenkins, the director.
You are completely wrong about Steve Perry. It is the inflated egos of Journey band members that were the problem, and not Steve Perry. He was always the decent one, classy and authentic. Some people can't understand what class is. You are one of them.
Kevin El Shido :P Creo que hay alguno de la incorporacion de Pineda, asi como la ceremonia del R&R Hall of fame.. pero en castellano, o con subt en castellano creo que no lo hay mas reciente
This documental was maked by VH1, about Journey band, and some details about their roads outside, but not ALL of them, because if they talk about all the work of Schon or Perry, they should talk ‘bout the rest of members path too. Anyway, i make a proposal of Schon biopic since he was a teenager inside of Santana supergroup. It will be a great movie dont you think?? 😉
All I know is I would HATE to lose all that GREAT works of music only because people thought Steve Perry was the only one who could or should sing them. Yes Perry is the voice and always will be but how could we lose a song like “ don’t stop” only because Perry was the only one who could sing it.
Imagine being on a rocket ship to fame and fortune and shooting yourself in the foot because your front man is getting you top ten radio hits and record album sales. They were great musicians. They could have been studio musicians or part of a nameless backing band. They should all be kissing Steve Perry's ass. If not for him, nobody would know who any of them are... That is just a fact. He got tired of carrying Journey on his back and fighting the band to produce hits instead of jam sessions that nobody wanted to pay to hear.
Johnathan Cain after Steve leaves: “we were confused and hurt. We thought we were a family”. Seriously!?!! You let Steve kick the drummer and bassist out, and replace them with machines and studio players, and you’re saying that? Hypocrite. That band would never ever be the same again. Steve was obviously very controlling and cared only about himself, and so did you.
Steve and the piano player brought commercial success to an exceptional Band then Steve slowly destroyed their kinship because of his ego and arrogance only to self implode. Thank God they found Arnell Pineda to revive this legendary Band.
There were multiple ego problems in Journey. I think THAT is what did them in. But they're not alone. Soooo many successful bands get all tripped out over money and other bs
Ok ... It was more than just him but essentially he was the bread & butter of the Band so he felt that gave a say so in their direction. They didn't blow up til he became their front man when him and the piano player wrote song timeless tunes.
Herbie said he's in the band, get used to it. Started Steve off on the wrong foot with them, making him the outsider. I have found several interviews Herbie had with Japanese and S. Korean businessmen where he said things like he had to have "that ear-candy voice and those brilliant song writing skills" no matter what the guys said. He also said he broke Neal to it by giving some of Steve's demo tapes to his wife.
@ (40:00) when Neal Schon said it changed my outlook on life he said it makes you realize is the things you were making such a big deal out of maybe were not so big. If that is the case then you should not be making such a big deal out of all this stuff going on in your band and the lawsuits and learn to get along with each other for this kid's sake. This is getting ridiculous. You are making a big deal out of nothing when the problems that boy had were worse than what you are going through I'm Just saying...
58:15 Look Steve I'm sorry but yes when your reluctance to getting said surgery is impacting others from playing the music they love, therefore it's causing them to not work. Then I'm sorry but yes it's a group choice.
Other biggest groups decide wait until the recovery of one of most important and dearest member. But in this case they decide move him out. And well… The group was never the same nor did it compose such iconic songs. They have an amazing musical value with Steve and the egos were most important (including Steve too)
@@Kaliope08Same with Styx. When Tommy quit Dennis DeYoung refused to replace him but instead hoped he would get the solo bug out of his system but instead Tommy sold his stake in Styx for $5,000 to join Damn Yankees who mercifully imploded when Grunge came along. When Dennis got Prototype COVID-19, Tommy and JY kicked him to the curb. In Pink Floyd, Roger Waters bullied Richard Wright out of the band in a four year span (first refusing his music contributions then berating him on stage to where Wright quit for two days then Roger eased Rick out of production duties and then the ouster which David Gilmour and Nick Mason were against), Storm Thorgerson and Hipgnosis (over the Animals cover) and Bob Ezrin (over leaking spoilers of The Wall concerts). Luckily Storm remained a friend and cover designer for David, Nick and Rick and also Ezrin co-produced About Face from David and also rehired Wright initially as a paid musician but eventually reinstated Rick after the Waters lawsuits. When Rick passed away as did manager Steve O’Rourke David ended the band plus wanted to watch his children grow up and raise his family with his second wife Polly and also a grandfather to his kids from his first marriage. When Phil Collins went through his personal issues Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford put Genesis on the shelf for an overdue break in 1979. Neil Peart lost his daughter and wife in a year so Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson put Rush on indefinite hiatus. Led Zeppelin went on indefinite hiatus when Robert Plant’s son Karac died in 1977 while on tour and it took John Bonham to persuade Plant into playing music again and when Bonham died Zeppelin ended.
38:56 Na Neal! You're wrong! Aside from the vocals, "Oh Sherrie" does NOT sound like Journey! There's no escaping Perry singing the way he does! Its not like he can change the sound of his fucking voice! Of course that aspect of it will be the same! 😂😂😂😂That's true of any lead singer from a band doing a solo album. But the rest of the song, the choice of keyboard sounds, guitar sounds, choice of chord voicings, arrangements, drums etc sounds totally different from Journey.
I didn’t think Strret Talk or FTLOSM sounded at all like “Journey”. Just like Steve Augeri’s solo album Seven Ways Til Sunday doesn’t sound like Journey. Great vocalists solo & their individual styles. Great vocalists within the band as well.
38:06 Yeah that's a bunch of bullshit imo. If guys have been in the same band especially for years or decades it's only healthy to do other side projects etc. Otherwise the music will get stale. You NEED other influences. Genesis for instance did that all the time and it actually strengthened the band. Artists need to learn to put their egos aside and just be cool with whatever the fuck they want to do musically.
They were better before they brought that guy on anyways I didn't like the direction they went even though I know it's all about the money 1st 3 albums were great after that it's slowly turned into yacht rock
