I saw them after Gregg left. They were still awesome, but I always find myself listening to the Rollie era stuff, Steve and Gregg could have crushed it. Steve wanted control. End of story. Rollies lyrics were better IMHO. Cain is just too soft.
The gym I work out at used to be the sears where I used the line up to get concert tickets. I laugh to myself every time I’m there. I also remember not paying all the bs fees that ticket master wants to charge nowadays.
@@adammckee3496 In San Francisco Bay Area, we had Ticketmaster centers and you could drive to, stand in line and if you got there early enough, you'd be first in line, and you'd walk away with a physical ticket. I always had good luck with their ticket locations. I always got the information first thing in the morning from the newpaper, before everything opened up.
Close, the best version was before Steve Perry joined. Greg Rolle has 100 times better voice. Their songwriting turned into bubblegum pop after he left.
@@TLoumena I have to disagree. The two together were incredible, but Perry's had a voice that couldn't be hidden. After, they put out some incredible music. Neil could crank that guitar as well.
This was definitely the best journey. I remember being in high school and listening to journey. Everytime I hear them it takes me right back to the 70s
My opinion, this is one of this bands greatest songs. Everything in harmony. Music, vocals, and longevity. Still one of my favorite songs to listen to. Steven Perry's introduction.
It's 2024 and watching this performance still gives me chills, just like it did when I saw them on stage in 1979 and 1982 . IMO this is the best lineup Journey ever had !💜
Bands used analog equipment all the time back then, samples were just around the corner in the 80’s you know when every bands drums sounded the same and every other pop rock band like journey fired their drummers. So many amazing live bands now it’s just a fact but you gotta search for them good top 40 radio is not like it was before.
Why is the audience so not excited looking?? I can’t understand it. I know it was early on in their career but you can’t hear music like that and just sit there like a bunch of turtles! Greatest Band of All Time!!
Man, what a glorious time to be young then. Seventeen, cruising around in my car jamming ridiculously loudly to my favorite Journey albums, Infinity and Evolution! Journey at their best!
Ainsley Dunbars' final JOURNEY ride here. Saw Journey at COMISKEY PARK that summer. 1978. With SANTANA & others. STEVE SMITH was on drums by then & the band didn't miss uh BEAT! TOTAL PROFESSIONALS!!!
@@sunjester8254 And a lot of bands can't. A LOT of bands. It sucks when you realize is was studio magic that made the sound of a band you like, and not pure talent, as we see here.
Perry has one of those signature voices. You know it's him on the first note. What a voice. Nobody can replace him......ever. Grateful to have seen them in 1980. Superb live band.
Me too! Every single time I hear this song, I immediately turn up the radio . Then I escape back to that safe place in my brain where I lost paradise in my youth. For the next 8 minutes or so, I’m in my 20’s loving every aspect of life!
his mellifluous voice was a nice counterpoint to perry's strident, albeit amazing voice. but it is definitely strident. but fucking amazing. makes me mad!! haha.
Santana's Black Magic Woman and a lot of their great early music. Gregg Rollie singing with Steve Perry just doesn't get any better Journey's best sound.
Music so damn good that it makes me cry at how incredible the musicianship was back then. We'll NEVER have great songs or musicianship like this ever again. So much sincerity and emotion!!!! This was the era of musical perfection.
I hope you're wrong. First there has to be a market for it, and that is missing right now. I believe there is at least as much talent and passion in the world right now as there has ever been, but it's not what is trendy or what is being forced upon us. Maybe what could make you right is how they system of streaming and too many choices has made it really hard to get a large audience without sounding like everybody else. I'm holding out hope that more than just independent and little-known bands will be making great new music.
@@frankmcbride7051 I’d say you are on the right path!! Music is like food, either you like how it sounds or ya don’t, kids now aren’t familiar with music that we grew up on, or even music from their own birthdates. But some of the best renditions of music from the day are live versions, all being played by LIVE musicians. And check out the Afro on Neil….badasssssss.
@@caseylooper6634 Don’t understand what you mean. I’m not talking about the complexity level of the Journey gig (Greg Rollie) era. I’m just saying the singing IMO is poor, and not anywhere in the league of Steve Perry. Greg did not have Steve’s range. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Steve is a very talented singer obviously. I guess them being in two totally different leagues is what throws me. The instant Steve kicks in on vocals he just annihilates Greg.
I grew up on these songs. I had the Journey Escape longsleeve shirt in 4th grade and loved it! I took it for granted we didn’t know how good we had it in the 70’s. No politicians, No 24 hours news stations, Just golden summers, Great music , Beaches and amusement parks everywhere.
The Infinity album is still the greatest album that Journey ever recorded in the studio. And the band line-up during that period is still the best Journey ever has or ever will sound!! Steve Perry-vocals. Greg Rollie-vocals, keyboards. Neil Schon-guitar. Ross Valory-bass. Ansley Dunbar-drums. Journey never has or never will get any better than that particular line-up, IMO.
Such is life🤷🏻♂️ didn’t realize I was living in the golden age of the 70’s & 80’s man. Now 60 yrs old I now know I was blessed to be growing up in those last 2 decades.. Your spot on bruh✌️
THE LAST 2 DECADES OF REAL & REALLY GREAT MUSIC 🎶 THE 70’s & 80’s. I DONT GAD WHAT ANYBODY SAYS. THERE WAS A FEW GOOD THINGS COME ALONG IN THE 90’s BUT THE 70’s & 80’s WERE THE SH*T PERIOD. PEACE OUT ✌️ AND STICK TO THE GOOD STUFF AND🖕THE PEOPLES WHOS TASTE IN MUSIC IS IN THEIR ASS. WE ROCK 🪨 🪨🪨🪨
They just don’t make good music like this anymore! It died with the 70’s and 80’s! I would love to just press rewind and go back to those days! It was an amazing time! Glad to have been born in those days!
No words....just love ❤❤❤❤ Still loving this October 20, 2023. January 5, 2024...back again. Can't get enough...... Steve Perry will forever be THE VOICE !!

Seeing this lineup takes me back to the days of their concerts and how magic they were. I don't know how many of their concerts I went to, but Steve had such charisma and vocals (and good to look at). Nostalgia doesn't describe the electricity in their music.
3:06-3:12 is my hands down favorite Steve Perry vocal ever. Absolutely flawless technique. Haha you don't know how many times I've replayed that part to get it right. Long live Journey and Steve Perry.
100% agree. I have watched this vid multiple times. Their transition between the 2 songs, just flawless. I used to listen in the olden days before YT, and this transition was on their record too. It brings chills to me sometimes.
Wow. Steve Perry’s voice is that of an angel. It will be another century before were blessed with that kind of talent again. Greg Rollie opposed him perfectly. This song, and this era in music has yet to be matched. We were all blessed to receive such a wonderful gift from such an incredibly epic band.
Best time to this song and the next one. My boyfriend told me at 18, to this song, “You know I love you”❤ and I told him I knew and I loved him. Now it’s 43 years later. We still love each other.❤Nice! Hang on to love! ❤
Most of the people in that audience didn't recognize that they were in the presence of greatness that day. The kind that only comes along perhaps a couple times in a generation.
Gregg Rollie was an absolutely amazing singer, I was really lucky to see him sing with journey when they released the capture live album, at the LA coliseum, I will never forget that as long as I live, Gregg Rollie is journey.
As great as Greg is on this song, I’ve always felt like this song was the moment Steve became the lead singer of Journey. Such a powerful voice on the original recording.
Listen to the guitar work by Schon, and the bass work by Vallory, and the stick work by Dunbar. The tight harmonies. The piano work by Rolie. Oh yeah, and Perry's vocals, too. You just don't see that kind of raw talent ANYWHERE today.
@@warrenjoseph498 Gregg had a voice that sounded really good with Perry's voice. They harmonized beautifully and powerfully. It was a real 1-2 punch. On top of that, Gregg Rolie was an amazing rhythm and blues keyboard player. No one played the Hammond B3 like him! When he left, he took all of that with him. The band never had this sort of grit again. It was a huge loss.
The best journey ever was end of story , no other album or period of this band sounds this way , I get goosebumps!! Greg Rollie was so so so so good !! My favorite journey album and this is my favorite track ! This is journey ! Wow .....Miss those days
Thanks so much for uploading this video. Everyone here who likes Journey dont get spoiled to the fact that a couple years ago you would have to go out and look hard to find this performance. Lucky for you journeycanadafan did that already so you can just watch this and enjoy with one simple click. Thanks again!
This song was my ‘Exhibit A’ in every “Who’s got the best rock voice?” discussions/arguments growing up. This was the best era of Journey by far IMO. The Rollie/Perry harmony was phenomenal.
Steve and Greg sound great together, I loved when he came in singing, when the summer's gone she'll be there standing by the light, his vocals just sound so amazing, I remember after hearing that song for the first time I just kept listening to hear his vocals, but those two really did sound good together.
I loved standing hanging out in line with my friends and great people for 12 hours afterall we're all there for the same reason miss those days and nights sometimes lol
It was great to be young at that time. Twelve when I first heard Journey on the radio. One of my favorite songs with Greg and Steve singing together. Total magic.
I know I am late to the party, but back in the day, I HATED that Greg Rolie left the band. I LOVED the back and forth between Steve and Greg. And Neil's fro was EPIC!!!!!
