Steve and Gregg were magic together. Perfect harmonies. Here you can already hear what a sensational frontman Steve would become. His voice is sensational. I love Lay it Down, Mother Father, Suzanne, Why Can't This Night Go On Forever, Still they Ride (live from Japan 1983) or any of Steve's solo stuff (Strung Out, Oh Sherrie)
Imagine hearing this for the first time an 18yo, cruising down the road in a convertible Malibu and feeling the wind as the sun goes down - Journey could do no wrong!
The saddest thing is these guys were one of the best bands in the late 70s & 80s and unfortunately they never have won a Grammy. Which when you see the artist today that have Grammys. 😢
It’s true! They’re all babies! 😭 Especially Steve. It’s *so* good. Loved hearing Gregg Rolie return in The Storm. Check out that band someday. Journey DNA through and through. So much passion. Always wanted to see them all to get back together again.
Winds of March is a MUST!!! The entire albums of Infinity and Evolution are amazing! Every single song on these albums will not disappoint. Journey On!
Yes, their studio game is as great at their Live shows. More Journey. I'd suggest Stone in Love for a rockin vibe or Still they Ride if you want mellow ballad.
I saw them on that tour with Eddie Money and Pat Benatar opening. It was the largest concert in Flint, MI history at the time. I wore my first copy of this album out and I am happily impressed that i remembered all the lyrics. They were unbelievable live, especially when Steve Perry left the stage for a couple jam instrumentals with the original members. Good reactions.
I got to see them in '82 ( I think) when they opened for Montrose - no Hagar just instrumental. They were amazing. The band hung out not far from where I was sitting to watch Montrose after their set. They were able to hang amongst the audience without being bothered.
This was our introduction to Steve Perry! OMG what a voice, right? It put journey into the stratosphere, With a reminince of a Boston/ELO like sound.awesome memories.
My favorite Journey years! Gregg is my favorite! Checkout the 50 yr anniversary where Greg Joins the band for a few songs along with TOTOS steve Lukethord and do a couple SANTANA SONGS! REMEMBER NEAL SCHON AND GREG ROLLIE PLAYED IN SANTANTA before forming Journey!
From the Infinity Album (Patiently) is a great choice next. But I'd recommend watching that then the live from The Midnight Special, back to back...In my opinion the live version is the best..also (Winds of March) is also beautiful...
Anything from departure is good. Best album in my opinion. I’m Crying, Precious Time, or Where Were You are my top 3 from the album. They rock and Steve sings his ass off.
It's great that you did the two songs together like we used to hear them on the radio. Greg and Steve were so awesome together. It's a shame we only got three albums of them both.
The great Aynsley Dunbar on drums. He played on albums by Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Michael Schenker and UFO, Jefferson Starship, Whitesnake, and Ian Hunter, among others. Aynsley was like an octopus, but he knew when to scale it back, too. Check him out on the first 3 (pre-Steve Perry) Journey albums, when they were a jam band. Topaz is a great instrumental that showcases the guitar prowess of Neal Schon along with Aynsley’s drumming.
Journey 1983 "Still They Ride" Live In Tokyo. HQ/Not the best quality but OMG. The Voice was on another planet. So lovely! And another is Journey - "Winds of March" (Official Audio)
The first singer, keyboardist Gregg Rolie is the same guy who sang "Black Magic Woman" when he was with Santana. The three albums: "Infinity - Evolution" and "Departure" are some of the best records of the 70s. (though, Departure was 1980).
Definitely Official videos of: Send Her My Love, After the Fall, Still They Ride (live in Osaka), Be Good To Yourself, Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’, When You Love A Woman, Girl Can’t Help It, La Do Da, Why Can’t This Night Go On Forever ❤️🔥. And from “solo Steve” official videos: Oh Sherrie, Foolish Heart, Missing You, Strung Out, I Stand Alone. I could go on but I’ll quit…for now. 😜
Think i listen to that now. Love that song .trying to learn piano. Working on feeling that wat now. Been a drummer 46 years. Piano only 4 months. Have a Long way to go with this years newyear resolution.
All of the songs on this album are really great, this is Steve Perry's debut with Journey and imo, it's his best, I mean, his vocals are just glorious! I've owned this album twice because someone actually stole it from me back in the 70's, and then in the 80's! I guess they really loved the album too. Really, you should take time out and listen to the whole album. Thanks for FINALLY playing something else from this album besides "Wheel In The Sky", like others usually do.
Live performance was even better with Journey, but you know that by now. Sorry that you missed seeing them for real in concert. Thanks for the great reaction videos; you do a terrific job appreciating these classics before music became just a tech production!
You should also react to 'Just The Same Way (with Perry and Rolie) and People And Places (Perry, Rolie and with Neal Schon *guitarist* doing most the singing*)!!'
Saw Journey 3 times live and they never disappoint. Saw them on the Escape, Frontiwrs and Raised on Radio tors. I have seen them once since “ The Voice” left and they were still fantastic. One of my all time favorite bands and brings back so many memories. 👍👍👍👍👍
Back in high school (1977 or so) I saw them live and also played the second song “Anytime” in my rock band! I sang lead, our lead singer sang Steve Perry’s part, and I absolutely nailed the guitar solo on my white Les Paul custom guitar. 😊 Memories from my childhood!
love this one! and glad u played both together, that is how it was intended....and is played on FM radio. Amazing stuff! Saw these guys in concert in 1981....amazing.
Another Song by Journey that I Like is " Only the Young " it was used as the Sound Track for the Movie " Vision Qwest ", I thought it was a Pretty Good Movie I watched it a couple of times, Another Song I like is " I'll be Alright Without You "( Official Video 1986 ).
Have you ever listened to Dixie Highway? It’s a great song, instruments 🎸 drums, vocals, Gregg Rollie on keyboards - changes like 3 times and I don’t know if it was recorded to a specific album. They did it live in a Japan recording and another in the states. Gregg was killing it and of course Neal’s guitar it’s a must hear.
First time I remember this being played was at my elementary school picnic/carnival. The carnival guys were blasting this on a ‘roller coaster’ type ride! So great!
From the same album, Patiently, Winds of March and Something to Hide, from the album Evolution: Lovin, Touchin’ Squeezin’ paired with City of The Angels, Just The Same Way, Sweet and Simple, Majestic/Too Late; From the album Departure: Line of Fire, Where were you, Someday Soon, Sweet and Simple, Anyway You Want It. From the live album Captured: Party’s Over(Hopelessly in Love), Dixie Highway, Lights/Stay A While (together) and Walks Like A Lady; from Escape: Any and all, can’t go wrong, but since you’ve already done Don’t Stop Believin’, Mother Father and I believe Who’s Crying Now also, how about Stone in Love and Still They Ride next? Open Arms, of course if you haven’t heard that. Keep on Running, Lay it Down, Escape, and Dead or Alive all good too. From the album Frontiers: 1st 5 tracks Separate Ways, Send Her My Love, Chain Reaction, After The Fall and Faithfully; from the album Raised on Radio: everything, except maybe Positive Touch, It Could Have Been You and the title track, not my faves. For Trial By Fire reunion album and last with Steve Perry, strong, solid album throughout that continues in a similar vain as the previous album RoR, with a few heftier more adventurous departures scattered throughout (Message of Love, One More, Castles Burning, Can’t Tame the Lion), the bulk are pop/rock/r&b tinged ballads that give ‘the Voice’ a remarkable platform to sing from. When You Love A Woman (Grammy nominated). Weaker tracks to push for last probably Colours of the Spirit, It’s Just the Rain, and I Can See It In Your Eyes. Not that they’re bad. Journey doesn’t make bad music. Just unremarkable, imo, by comparison. Honorable mentions and absolutely worthy to listen to are from Evolution: Loving you is Easy, Do You Recall, Daydream, When You’re Alone It Ain’t Easy and Lady Luck and then from Departure: Good Morning Girl, Homemade Love, Natural Thing and Little Girl. I like I’m Crying also. Well, this should keep you going on your Journey journey for quite a while. I know I personally am looking forward to every minute of it. Thank you.🙏 ❤
Raised on Radio came after Perry’s first solo album and saw him gain a bit more power and creative control over the direction and production. Since he was pushing them in a more r&b and soul infused direction, back to his roots and primary influences as a singer, during the recording some of the band wasn’t happy with where things seem to be heading and Perry wasn’t satisfied with the feel and wanted to make a change in the rhythm section to better suit the new material. In come a new drummer and bassist, Randy Jackson, of American Idol fame later. But after another extended break, when they reunited for Trial by Fire, Steve Smith and Ross Valory were back in the lineup. More recently they were fired again for conspiring against Neil Schon primarily to try to gain additional legal control be able to stop touring but still get paid I think was the gist. A lot of reports and rumors of turmoil and in-fighting unfortunately these days. A few years back Neal and Greg Rollie put together some dates as “Journey through Time” with drummer Deen Castronovo performing Perry’s lead vocal parts from behind the kit. I so badly wish I could have made one of those shows and wish a longer tour had ensued, but I believe there were some shenanigans going on that caused Greg to not agree to it. Videos of those performances are on YT. Good stuff! Most recently rumors and speculation of a possible limited reunion with Perry. I know his voice isn’t what it once was, but that would still be magical and I would make every attempt to see them if that somehow actually comes to fruition.😊
Listen to something to hide from this album!! Steve’s vocals are out of this world on it and towards the end he mimics the guitar with his voice and his range is an amazing!! ❤❤❤
Awesome song, love it. Other songs I highly recommend are, Positive Touch, I'm Cryin, Walks like a lady (live version), Where were you, Castles burning, Message of love, Dixie Highway, Suzanne, Edge Of The Blade, Chain reaction, After the fall, The eyes of a woman, Troubled child. All awesome songs you gotta check out. 😎🎸👌
Studio version of Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' is awesome. It builds with each round and the harmonies are awesome. These albums came out while I was in high school. These first 3 albums with Steve Perry are like fusion rock. Twas the times. Escape was much more radio friendly. There was a feeling at the time that if you were radio friendly you were sellkng out. Hence some friction in the band. Trivia question of the day meaning when it came out was how many Na Nas do they sing. The radio stations would use that as a way to get free tickets to concerts.
For us Journey diehard fans that grew up in the 70s and 80s we know that they sound just as good live ,if not better... but its probably not a bad idea to listen to the studio version first...
Salvo G, Steve Perry with Journey have so many beautifully lesser known songs that will blow you away like "Still She Cries," the piano so hauntingly beautiful in this one especially towards the end of the song. "Strung out" "When You Love A Womans" ( nominated for a Grammy). "It's Just the Rain" "You've Got Someting To Hide " "Don't Be Down on me Baby" But please listen to the live version of I'll be Alright Without You" Steve 's vocal are so unbelievable on this one, cuts you to your core!😮
Still They Ride must be from Tokyo 83 (And while you watch and listen Steve had the flu!) Also Wheeling the Sky from Osaka!!! Steve and Neil Are so incredible playing off of each other!!!!
Just a little rock n roll trivia tidbit. FYI, Lead guitarist Neal Schon and Greg Rollie keyboards were both in the band of SANTANA. Rollie, did lead vocals of the song "Black Magic Woman" and Neal Schon was only a 15 year old kid when he was asked to Join the band. Putting together the band Journey, with Steve Perry wasn't received well. Thank the band manager for convincing them to give it time and be patient. Speaking of being patient. Just ask Neal Schon about Steve Perry and him collaborating for their first sit down with only his guitar and the first few notes he played. They knew they had magic in a bottle. Hence the hit, "Patiently"
I first got into Journey in early high school after Remember the Future was released and my favorite era of Journey is that album and the 1st 3 albums with Steve Perry. (Infinity, Evolution, and Departure). That's when they were at their peak for me, and those early albums made them the legends that they are now.
Still They Ride, Escape, Frontiers, Steel of the Blade, Just the Same Way, Stone in Love, Patiently, Anyway You Want It, People and Places, Stay Awhile
I was always a fan of Gregg and Steve singing together. Although, different songs, radio stations would often play them together. Met Gregg during a performance a while back. Great guy.
