GAWD all the "But Perry" yada yada yada is exhausting. I saw SP live back in the day when the song came out & was brand new & he was 33 in his prime. Arnel was 47 and has been singing professionally his whole adult life and then some. At Arnel's age here, SP retired. Arnel has kept going. Nonstop. Steve Perry is a legend with a legendary voice and writing credits. But Arnel has kept Journey alive. I saw them / him 2 years ago and he did an outstanding performance. No, he didn't write the songs nor is he Steve, but truthfully I prefer Arnel's tenor resonance and depth and tone BETTER than SP's slightly nasal tone, no disrespect. For nearly 13 years, Arnel has been and is Journey's future. Def Leppard was on the same bill. There is no question some of the vocals including lead had recorded backing tracks however the bassists vocals were horrific and Elliot is hanging on but sounds rough. With Schon being 66 and Cain now 70, in 2020, they may have 5-10 years max left. Go enjoy them live while you can. Everything changes, life is short. Namaste
What a beautiful and hard to sing a song of Journey !! WOW !! AP nailed it !! He totally rocked the hell out of the crowds and gives goosebumps with his power ballad songs-- full of soul and emotions... AP gives justice to the melody, appeal, and emotions with each difficult Journey song he sings..--- the legacy of Journey lives on---because of you--Arnel !! Bravo !!
this is probably the toughest journey song to sing not only do you have to hit the high notes but to do it while being accompanied by full rock band and and a string orchestra this is brutal i cant imagine how arnel pulled this off sure hes stugling with some high notes but i couldnt care less he added his own touch of rock and one can feel it
+Fantastica He's a pretty good lounge singer (even dresses the part). There's multiple comments how he does a "great job", "nails it", etc. Apparently these viewers have never watched Steve Perry perform this song live. If you don't have time to compare voices, just watch side-by-side Perry's 1981 live version and this guy's from 2:38 through 3:34 of the song. WARNING: if you're a Pineda fan, don't watch because it's almost impossible to watch his effort after watching Perry execute this song flawlessly. It's not just this song, it's any song that you compare the two. Actually, it's not even fair. The only other vocalist IMO who rivaled Perry for excellence is Geoff Tate of Queensryche (although he was more a baritone who could sing high versus Perry who is a tenor).
@@jamesmondragon526 I think your a vocal coach hahahah in your own way,,,, Steve Perry his past vocalist of journey and arnel Pineda is for new generation 🤣🤣🤣🤣because your too old ofcourse you like the old style of singing hahaha
This is the first time I've heard Arnel perform this one..(I was so used to hearing Deen do it), he's certainly does it justice I dare say. Usually they would have Deen fill in with this song during concert while Arnel was taking a rest or getting changed during a conccert..
Amazing that such a huge voice comes out such a small guy - I mean that as a total compliment. He really does justice to the Journey tunes! Deen sang this live in Perry's absence but now with Deen gone, Arnel does a great job on this song with some really difficult notes to hit (though Deen could go higher easier). Omar does a very nice job on drums too. Looking forward to seeing Journey on June 8th with Steve Smith on drums. Should be great!
I'm not a vocal coach but i think Deen uses his head voice to hit the high notes while Arnel is using his chest voice that's why he's a little bit struggling..but just a little bit.
@@nofear5726 I"d agree. Seems Deen has a very good head voice range. I've trained vocally under numerous voice coaches and they all say you should "let it flow" when it comes to the higher notes, meaning to use the head voice. Even though it might sound thin initially, it will gain strength. Of course, Perry had an extremely unique range at every level and his passagio seemed non-existent because of the way he was able to sing through it.
I really want to watch AP sing this song without orchestra as the timing (with many instruments) seems quite hard but he still nailed it. He also should performed this way back 2007~2009.
IMHO Arnel sings it closer to Steve's studio version. Deen's version is OK too but has a lot of falsetto. This is singing. Arnel at 47 hitting notes that Steve Perry sang when he was 30. Good job.
In my untrained ears, Deen has a better sound when singing this song but Arnel does a pretty good job too. Love both versions though, all but love for whoever sings this.
hyutyub no he doesn’t at all sing close to Steve Perry’s studio version. It’s not even in the original key. 🤣 Don’t even do an age comparison, seriously. He doesn’t also do the last 35 seconds that Perry did.
deen castronovo is a great drummer and a great singer too.this songs have a lot of effort and so hard to sing.good job arnel to sing this song also, i'm proud of you.thank you.
Psycho Jack Jack arnel can sing this better than steve back in his 20’s 30’s. Now give me 47 yr old singers that can hit those notes hitted by arnel. Moron.
You're fantastic here Arnel , your voice is powerful and I luv u. but i really like this song when sang by Deen. I think every lead singers of journey has songs that would sounds great to them individually.. one can't sings all and sounds amazing and magnificent. There has to be a specialty.
I agree! But for me AP has never disappointed me with other Journey songs especially Mother Father I never thought he'd be able to perform this amazingly and he had delivered them very well
I think steve perry before said in an interview that mother father was the most difficult song he sang live. Arnel's version is strong i hope he doesn't destroy his voice in the coming years
Okay people, Deen was and is capable of a GREAT SONG, so is Arnel, he did an okay job. I do however have to say this, there is no one out there that can even come close than Steve Perry on any of the Journey songs. Let us be thankful for THE VOICE for making these songs FANTASTIC!!!
arnel pineda version of mother father is better he sang it perfectly with so much emosyon his voice is perfect than anybody period god bless you always
I listened to it - ok and it leads people to listen to the original. Nothing compares to Steve Perry but glad Arnel allowing a new generation to learn about Steve’s music
Nice job by AP as always, even though Deen's performance was better on this song in my opinion. Steve's version is always tops in my book, but happy AP is part of the Journey sound.
AP has given Journey the opportunity to explore modern sound like they have done in the Revelation album. I noticed the change of their music when he came.
I applaud Arnel for attempting this song as it's a very difficult song to sing but he can't pull it off Arnel sounds strained and pitchy during the high notes he just can't sustain them. At least Castronovo could hit the high notes and continuously sustain them. This is one Journey that shouldn't be touched.
It’s because Arnel tries to rely on his chest voice for the whole thing. Great way to blow out your vocal chords AND sound pitchy. Deen sings this one (normally) in the key of G major-consistently since he first started doing it. I guess it doesn’t matter that much that it was lowered a half step. I agree this is Deen’s song.
Its easy for Deen to sing this becausethe voice he used here is not pure let's say fake voice.. Falsetto... I'm not saying its not ok to sing with Falsetto its actually a great gift for a singer... In using Falsetto your vocal chord is just like in rest condition beacuse you can hit notes easily... While the voice that Arnel's used here was chest voice and pure which you will have hardtime in your breathing and your vocal chord will easily get tired and stiffed. Like steve perry he was using Falsetto but his falsetto was round, soft and thick thats why it sounded like pure and that's rare for people to have this that's why Perry made himself as the voice..
None of them used their “falsetto” voice. I don’t know where you got your definition. The only falsetto that occurs in this song is the last part…. The “ahhhh” part. Deen sings this full voice-like you’re supposed to-which is a mixture of chest and head voice. That’s what keeps a singer from ruining his vocal cords.
I iked Steve's singing. I have the escape album. in good shape. I take good care of my vinyl records. Steve had an amazing voice that would kw the roof off the building. And today. it's Steve's voice when you hear journey on a classic rock station. Greg Rollie I also liked. The band blended in together with Steve on all there songs they wrote. I liked the one they wrote for Arnel. After all these years. Neal wrote some Fantasticurics with Jonathon Cain. I don't know why Journey did not break over 100.000 when they wrote new song's with Arnel Pineda. Do d well when Steve was with Journey. Made over Millions of dollors an won Grammy awards for Journey. And with Arnel. done okay. Hope Journey dose well . And supposed to do an new album. And hope dose well to continue and your with new song's.
Why can't we just stop comparing this journey lead singers .let us all be civilize and give respect to them .they have become lead singers in different times and they did their best .no two people are alike or sound the same .there is always a difference .no need for comparison .love the one that you think is outstanding without dragging someone else's name .
when it comes to this songs like mother father and why can't this night go on forever.Steve perry is the best in live concert.clean high notes and without struggle.arnel technique is more diaphragm and chestone.that's their different.
um hello? Do some people think Deen is a sweet guy who was too sick to make a gig or something?? He lost a great job from being a malicious idiot. There's some things you just CAN'T do- especially when you're in the public eye. When someone like Omar Hakim can step up on short notice and do such an outstanding job- Journey would be out of their minds to associate with a guy who has the kind of problems Deen has. I'll guarantee you they won't. "Doesn't feel the same?" No- BETTER.
I really love how he performs this song but when he got older like in 2017 his vocals can't sing this anymore. But I'll give him a pass on that cause the dude has been their lead singer for 9 or 10 straight years by 2017 and his voice is pretty tired by singing hard to sing songs like separate ways, don't stop believing and other songs.
AP can still sings all Journey songs he can’t hear himself because of audio sound guy ..I went to Journey’s concert last month and AP is more than awesome he hits all the high notes .
Neal Schon is one of my all time favorite guitar players. But, I think his best work is behind him. He had such a pure and original tone and sound back in the day and by back in the day, I mean before Raised on Radio. Now, its just a blather of effects, whammy bars and delays. Too bad.
Technique-wise, as well. The "slur" as I personally call it started with the '96 Trial by Fire album. He'd play a scale or a string of notes in quick "slurs". Its a pretty common habit of his and one can hear it distinctly in his solos in most of Journey's songs from '96 to present. The same scale/note patterns played quickly to get from point A to point B.
Good point, but arnel was 39 when he joined journey in 2007 and still had nothing compared to Steve. And let's face it, a 7 year difference isn't much of a factor.
augeri capture the style of perry but lack of breath , while arnel has the power but his style are far from steve here, im not saying this is bad rendition but deen castronovos version blows my mind
It gives me goosebumps. Even in 2019 at the age of 55, he nails it in the original key. (Journey Through Time shows) I’m trying to find a clip from Atlantic City 2021. His Still They Ride sounded great-I’m glad he took it over.
To all those commenting that Arnel is 47 and can't hit the notes that steve did in his 30's you need to watch steve's 1994 live in NY performance. Not only did he still hit the high notes at the age of 45 he did not get winded doing it. What people need to realize is that steve would let the high notes come naturally and never forced it so as not to ruin his voice. Arne never had the vocal range steve did.
I just realize on his early career AP using less headvoice then sounds constantly flat above his second passagio. Deen using much headvoice to sing this song.
Dean is using a falsetto to this song. But arnel uses a pure tenor like perry did in original key.and perry uses a falsetto in a second stanza...and bridge of this song.
Dean use falsetto and Arnel used too much head voice and he has kinda oversung it which made it sounds rock instead of ballad. Regardless of the style Dean and Arnel did great!
Lia-thanks for having knowledge about how singing works! No one else seems to know what falsetto is vs head voice. A good singer effortlessly makes the transition from chest to head voice. This song cannot be sung completely in chest voice.
Yes it is true that Steve Perry and the band made up. I think it would be FANTASTIC if The Voice and Steve The Machine Gun Smith REUNITE and YES for those who like Arnel Pineda still be in the band and perform. I would pay to hear SP sing again. What a rare GOD GIVEN TALENT we over the years have been BLESSED to hear. Like I stated before. Arnel did a great job with Mother Father with what tools he has and kootos for attempting a song that quite frankly is a vocal nightmare for anyone to take on. There would only be a few who could come close or even nail it. Freddy Mercury, Robert Plant, Laura Brannigan. Laura Brannigan God Rest her soul, to me is the FEMALE VERSION OF THE VOICE.!!! For those of you not familier with her, listen to rare vocals. 5 octaves easily.
+Roy Ramos I didn't noticed it. I enjoyed the song sung in tune and the words pronounced clearly. If there is a glitch then it is normal for this was performed live.
I love journey but having dean not in the band behind the drums, there is no weight there anymore the feel is gone dean was a driving force of this band, band sound weak and lame now BUT i am still a fan regardless.
Denn was temporary left the band because he was arrested for something wrong cases.... hmmm so sad happen to him. Let's pray he will comeback soon in God well
Raymond Sicoli I couldn't agree more. Iv'e watched Journey twice in the 80's and when Perry left I thought Journey is gone. Although Arnel filled in only 80% of Perry's role, the addition of Dean singing Mother father and Still they ride plus the harmony he provides on After All these Years revived my fascination with Journey. However, Dean needs to get his act together and apologize to the public. Journey made the right decision to temporarily replaced him.
Raymond Sicoli I agree. Deen hits the drums which much more power than Omar...much like Eric Carr of KISS (RIP). Plus, Deen's vocals are missed here. Arnel does a nice a job filling in, but I prefer Deen singing this one. I hope and pray Deen gets himself together. He's better than that! I am sure Neal, Jonathan, Ross and Arnel will give him another chance once he cleans himself up and atones for his mistakes.
Omar came in with short notice & no history of the songs. Once he learns the parts to all the songs, rather than having to read charts & play, he can fill the shoes easily of Dean Castranovo. Actually, without Steve Smith, it's not the same, but like Smith, Omar Hakim is a jazz drummer, so...
