I think that two things can be true. First, the entire group was awesome as a group and as individual musicians. Second, Steve is a remarkable singer. Together they were incredible. But Steve is the voice of Journey 🙂 and always will be.
Thank you gram. I have a ton of things on my heart to say but what you said, really boils down to that. Class of '82 by the way. Seen Journey with SP 4 times. Woohoo!!
You said it…. Journey will always be the best! Steve Perry is the Voice and l was there to enjoy it from the beginning! I still listen just about every day
You don't have to take back what you said, Hap, about Steve Perry. You are correct: Without him, the band would not have survived. The band had been told just before Steve joined that it was in danger of being dropped by the label because their albums weren't selling. Period. Steve joined the band and gave it his distinct sound, and the band stared selling out arenas. Secret sauce? Steve Perry's voice.
Stay awhile is an absolute favorite song for me. Sing it to me Steve. I’m still crushing on him. So amazing. So many songs...so many years now being a diehard fan of Journey. There is no Journey for me without Steve Perry. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Steve actually wrote Lights when he was broke and trying to get a break in L.A. It was supposed to be a jingle for morning news. The original lyric was "when the sun shines in L.A." When he moved to San Francisco to join Journey, he changed it to "when the sun shines on the bay".
Steve was the organizational glue that propelled the band into a supergroup. Don't apologize. You're right. He was considered difficult to work with because he did have a vision for the group and it's music.
Neal Schon is an amazing guitar player. Neal and Steve were a great match for each other in their talents, resulting in great music. Steve, what can I say,,, a voice like no other.
I've had the pleasure of seeing journey with perry 1983 miami baaeball stadium, sold out 70,000 plus it was genaral admission by the time journey came on I had managed to get about fifteen feet or so from the stage, so mr perry is actually the only singer ive seen that is actually better live than in the studio, he's also the only singer in the world that has the octave range that he does, if you compare the greatest singers in the world to mr perry he actual soars above all of them, no one and I emphasize no one can out sing steve perry period!!
These songs are from the 70's and Gregg Rollie was the singer and pianist/keyboard and Neil Schon the guitars both were in the group Santana Gregg was the singer and pianist pianist and the keyboardist and Neil was very shy and used to hide till they left Santana, and started Journey .Much love 💘
Good for you! The song Stay Awhile is my favorite song! Steve Perry could sing the phone book anything and I would know that voice! There is NO COMPARISON! He is a LEGEND! Love what you are doing never judge a book by its cover cause you will miss all the stuff that's on the inside kinda like you said! ❤
I love Journey with Steve Perry and I love your reactions to their music. Those reactions were what brought me to your channel so keep 'em coming! If you want another great live performance try "Still They Ride" from Tokyo 1983. I heard Steve was sick with the flu at the time but he still put on a great show.
Let's not forget🤦the legendary Freddie Mercury 👼! Steve how many times, even when he was dieing he performed! The Great Steve Perry has a beautiful voice which I love 💕! Fantastic reaction Hap!
What a wonderful reaction Hap! 🔥💥 I love Journey and Lights/Stay Awhile is one of their best. 🎶🎸🎤 There is nothing like the purity of Steve Perry's voice. He can do a run of notes like no one else. They may have a new singer, Arnel Pineda now, and he sounds similar, but he doesn't have the same vocal quality. "Be Good to Yourself" or "After the Fall" would be great follow-ups to this. Peace J ✌ ☮ 💕
True story ….my husband bought us tickets to go to one of the Journey concerts in the late 90’s and when we got there and found out it wasn’t Steve Perry that would be singing …..we left !!
Wonderful reaction ! I agreed Journey isn’t the same without Steve. This man is perfection. I raised on Journey when my dad and mom used to listen them and I still do to this day.
2 songs from 2 different years, and yet! They both fit so well together!! Lights was brought to us in 1978, and Stay Awhile was brought to in 1980!!! Lights, was the very first song that I ever heard from Journey!! However, I didn't know who they were until 1980!! And I've been a long time ever since (1978)!!!
❤❤❤I haven't heard this song in A looong time but yet I could sing along word for word lol brings me back to my high school days. What teenage girl didnt have a crush on Steve Perry🥰, you are right the whole group is amazing. Thanks for sharing😍
I just love me some Journey!! Been a big fan for 40 years!! Really appreciate the younger generation that play them. Brings back some great memories ❤❤ thanks hap..❤❤❤
That VOICE, Steve Perry' with that captivating sound. Love the way he sings these songs almost like a lullaby, so smooth. HAP, wonderful, sincere reaction. Loved it!! 💜🎵💜🎵
Excellent reaction, HAP! I worked swing shift in SF when this song was released in 1978. Gads, I loved it whenever it came on the radio just as I was crossing the Bay Bridge into "the city". Steve Perry's voice matched the beauty of the city lights at night.
My two favorite songs by Journey! My favorite band...hands down. I'm in my 60's and I've followed them from day one. I've even still got their first album. "Infinity"!!!
A beautiful song, almost as if it is floating away😊. Wonderful guitar playing🎸. I often have the feeling that in these past days the live music without auto-tune had more soul.🤩 Thank you for the great reaction, as always. Just right to start the weekend.🙋🏻♀️
That was beautiful! I think I will have to check out the Journey playlist because like Queen I'm sure they have songs I've heard over the years that will make me say...oh yeah I remember that!!!🤩
Love this song. When I think of Journey this is usually the song I think of. No idea why but it just is. Never really noticed this. He has an unusual low forehead. The things you notice in the middle of the night....
I agree. Journey without Steve is pretty flat and, from their lack of hits since he left, many people feel that way. I have to say I've always been a fan of Steve, rather than the band. It was very troubling when he became a recluse, which makes it even better that he's back. One in a million.
I hope he stays in the public eye, there was a recent incident that could send him back into hiding. Bernie Taupin has written his memoirs, and Steve, being modest and humble, didn't think of himself as a VIP who would have his "people" make arrangements to attend a book signing, he just went down to the bookstore all by himself and sat on a bench outside to wait for the event to begin. The security guard in charge of the door soon noticed a ruckus starting outside and sent a girl out to see what was happening. She snagged a autograph for her husband before she told security what was going on out there. He was rescued and escorted inside and plopped down in VIP seating. He was wearing his rattiest old khaki jacket that he thinks makes him incognito, his fans have come to recognize it immediately.
@@nancywyatt821 Thanks for sharing this, Nancy. I have been disturbe by incursions into his privacy, including whne a tour bus stopped and interrupted his lunch with a companion. People need to be nore respectful. I know I am. I've never run into Steve on the streets of Toronto, but I did run right into Jon Bon Jovi inmy old neighbourhood. And I let him walk by without causing a scene. So did the rest of the people on the sidewalk.
Nice choice! I like that you appreciate the smallest of details! Thank you for sharing!❤️🇺🇸They we’re AMAZING to see. You sound sinus-ey. Hope your health is good.
Try Journey's , Of A Lifetime, and Feeling That Way/Anytime, Just the Same Way for a few of the songs that were written by and best feature Greg Rollie, their original keyboard and vocalist. Enjoy!
Listen to wheel in the sky by Journeys performance live in Osaka 1980 video was posted by EwerLord. Steve Perry does an awesome vocal riff and run at the beginning of the song. He’s is an amazing vocalist!!
Another group that was totally out of mind for me. You just stirred the embers. Thanks to Debra S. for the direct request and for your reaction. Insightful, as always.
This is my favorite Journey song. I'm from NorCal- not "The City", as we call San Francisco- but from the other bay - the Monterey Bay. And God, I miss it!
It was a different world back then. Plus, there are cameras everywhere! She may have been a "plant" someone picked ahead of time. In theatre it's done often.
I think the special sauce of Journey was Steve Perry, but without the core song writer group of Jonathan Cain, Steve Perry and Neal Schon, they would just be another band. Those three know how to write a hit.
No need to take back your comment IMHO. Steve's voice is the best instrument in the band along with the rest for sure but without him, it's just not the same. This will always be my favorite band but only with Steve.
For the record they’re not the same song. They’re not even on the same album. Lights was the first track on 1978’s Infinity and Stay Awhile was somewhere in the middle of 1980’s Departure that the tour this concert was from was supporting.
Gonna ruffle some feathers here. I'm a true Journey fan...four pre-Perry albums filled with unbelievable musicianship, especially showcasing Neal Schon and establishing him as the best guitarist ever. With the addition of Steve Perry, the greatest lead singer in history, they solidified their place as perhaps the most talented BAND ever. I remained a big fan upon the release of Infinity, Evolution, Departure and Escape...all of which had the perfect mixture of Rock n Roll and slow/ballads....because of a BALANCE of Perry, Schon, Rolie, Cain. However, the remaining albums with Perry saw him taking control of the band, ending in him wanting Steve Smith and Ross Valory booted before Raised on Radio. The songwriting became LESS rock oriented because of Perry's ego and taking control. Don't get me wrong, that doesn't diminish his immense talent, but the band lost its glory days before Perry left the band. If anyone listened to Journey ONLY because of Perry's voice, you missed out on so much more.
