This week on our hidden gems series, we are are zeroing in on one of america’s greatest bands. Journey Where we’ll count down their top 5 greatest hidden gems. Before the band was formed in San Francisco in 1973, as many of you may know, Guitarist Neal Schon started out in Santanas band along with Greg Rolie. In fact Neal Schon was a young virtuoso who was so great he was asked to be in two different bands receiving an invitation with two different legends:
After spending several years in the Santana band performing on the albums Santana III and Carvavansera , He and Greg Rolie founded Journey which was originally called Golden Gate Rhythm Section. At first they were going to serve as a backup group for professional artists from the bay area. at that time the band included Neal on guitar and Greg Rolie on keyboards and vocals, with Ross Vallory on bass and George Tickner at Rhythn guitar who both came form the band Frumioius Bandersnatch.
While Prairie Prince of the Tubes on drums. but after just one live show in Hawaii the band decided against being a backup group and instead developed into a jazz fusion band and changed their name to Journey. As time went on Aynsley Dunbar stepped in as drummer as Prairie Prince rejoined the Tubes. After three albums, the self titled debut released in 1975, Look into the Future in 1976 and Next in 1977, then band changed their musical direction. Enter Steve Perry.
Actually first the band Hired singer Robert Fleischman as they transitioned to a more accessible style of rock. The band actually toured with Fleischman in 77. But their were differences between he and band manager Herbie Herbert, during a live show at Soldier Field in Chicago the band met Steve Perry and what followed is the stuff of legend. You just knew the power of Perry on that Feeling that Way.
#5- CHAIN REACTION from Journey’s multiplatinum 1983 album Frontiers. After the mega success of Escape and the advent of MTV Journey was ready to go bigger. The first single off of the album was a scorcher: Separate Ways Worlds Apart became one of the band’s defining rockers, It shot up to #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 with a very 80s centric music video to go along with it.
