So today we’re coming back to one of our newest shows on this channel. It’s called Solo Venture. In this show we follow the adventures of lead singers who leave their bands for a time to pursue a solo song or album. However, that’s only half the criteria. For this series these legendary leads also have come back to their original band. Last time out we covered Dennis DeYoung and his solo hit Desert Moon. This time we are following the breakaway saga of one of the greatest vocal talents to ever grace the pages of rock history... Journey’s own Steve Perry and his 1984 hit ‘Oh Sherrie.’
Before Steve Perry took the mic for Journey in 1977, he was in a band called the Alien Project. But in a tragic twist of fate, Perry’s bandmate, bassist Richard Michaels, was killed in a Fourth of July car accident just days before they were to sign with Columbia. Heartbroken and distraught, the group disbanded and Perry almost quit music altogether.
However, weeks later, Columbia’s Don Ellis sent a demo of Perry’s work to Journey’s manager Herbie Herbert... Herbert liked what heard from Perry and after some convincing, Perry agreed to meet with the band. Then after co-writing a song with guitarist Neal Schon, Steve was hired on.
