Ross is the very definition of "underrated bassist."
@sophiaspapi2003

Ross Valory is one of the most solid rock bassists of all time. His playing style, musical sensibilities and overall sound are a huge part of the classic Journey sound. Journey would not be Journey without Ross Valory. Neal Schon owes Ross a huge debt of gratitude.

Yeah listen to Dead or Alive off of the Escape album. He keeps up with Neal with no problems at all. Also listen to their first album from 1975, his playing is really badass there as well.

So underrated -- he's always kicked A$$. Kind of the same way Alex Van Halen was in the shadow of Eddie, Ross Valory was in the shadow of S. Perry (and S. Smith.) All great players in this band.

I used to think the bass on "Be Good to Yourself" was Ross, but it was Randy Jackson! However, Ross can play those meaty riffs just as well in concert now! I would rate Ross's melodic sense very highly -- he seems very jazz-oriented, which sometimes makes people overlook bass talent, because they are expecting bombast -- which is not a problem when you listen to Entwistle or Squire. But I also like those melodic fills and rhythmic pulses, such as Ross's "Don't Stop Believin'" performance.

@Ross Valory Wow if this is really Ross Valory I am excited to communicate with you. Without gushing, I love the melodic bass line you put on Of a Lifetime, Journey's opening track. Also, Snow Theme is very beautiful and I remember the song writing credit for that instrumental being attributed to you. I could write forever but I want to be your angel for the day by mentioning just those two thoughts. I'm a huge pre Steve Perry Journey fan. You and Dunbar and you and Smith were so tight. I love Steve Perry but I get offended when I read comments that he "was" Journey. To this day, I can play the Look into the Future album for a friend and he or she will be shocked to learn that it is a Journey album. May God continue to bless you and your family. Keep in touch! (I love that one picture of you looking out the trailer door that was included on the Captured booklet/sleeve)

@Ross Valory My favorite Journey is 1980 Departure tour Journey. I hated by 83 how so many older songs were rushed just to fit them into the setlist. I came across a 1977 New Year Eve concert at the Cow palace I think it was. Fabulous concert. Always wondered why Spaceman was never played live. Even when Rolie and Schon did the Journey through time tour, that song wasn't included.

In 1979, I went to my local music store to buy a new bass guitar. After trying several, I narrowed it down to two: the Gibson Ripper bass and the Ovation Magnum bass...they were both around the same price. I remembered once seeing a picture of Ross Valory playing an Ovation Magnum, and that was all I needed to make my decision. I became the proud owner of an Ovation Magnum bass. Thanks, Ross!

For years I never knew it was Randy Jackson that recorded After the Fall bass guitar on Frontiers LP. Makes sense now because of the slap & pop at end. Love Neil Schon's outro solo on After the Fall!!! If you're with me reach out here... Thanks

Finnally someone besides myself has the Huevos to speak up and say so. Thank you! Everyone from the original band is now gone save for Neil Schon and Jonathan Cain. Schon being the only original member that never left. While Journey was undoubtedly one of the best all around bands of the 80's and beyond, if you're buying concert tickets expecting to get the same vibe we all got back in the 80's on the Escape tour, you're in for a major disappointment. I'm not trying to take anything away from the current band. I mean what the hell, how many bands have you ever heard of that became their own tribute band? All I'm saying is that Journey in and of itself is long gone. In my humble opinion, the day Steve Perry was ousted was the beginning of the end for Journey. Niel Schon, in his infinite wisdom, who was the deciding vote to relieve Perry of his singing duties in turn relieved the band of the sound it took them eight years to find who also decided to oust Herbie Herbert, the man who put Perry and Journey together. Everyone in the band now are all great musicians. Dean Castronovo is one of the single best drummers/singers I've ever heard as is the rest of the band. They are not however, Journey.

In the meantime, try showing a little respect as I have little if any doubt you'd make it past the first five shows.
