I would typically use Maps.me offline maps but the new phone I bought didn't have a gps radio so it didn't work that well. I recommend getting a phone plan in Africa since wifi is rather rare or expensive.

Did not take any anti malarials. My primary precaution is trying not to get bit from dusk till dawn. But I do have Malaria testing kits and treatment medication. 2. Not really but I keep my eyes open

Wildlife is pretty much decimated in most areas due to the bushmeat trade. Anti Poaching laws are not really enforced so as a general rule , if you're moving through populated areas the wildlife has long been killed. Also trees are felled in large numbers to manufacturer charcoal, this is a huge trade that is never discussed, yet it is made by the truck load. Slash and burn agriculture, all these practices contribute to the way it looks. Almost every way that rural people in Africa make a living is detrimental to the environment and completely unsustainable.
