Please no spoilers! So that I can provide my best and most honest reaction, please do not mention the names of any future characters, events, or episode titles (this goes for future series as well). Please do not say which upcoming episodes are good or bad, otherwise I will have trouble forming my own opinion! Thank you, and enjoy!

Mark Lenard and Jane Wyatt came up with the two finger touching gesture to symbolize Vulcan love, and ever since, actors playing Vulcans have used that.

One of the main draws for me to any reaction video is the honest FIRST TIME reaction of someone to something I love. Its a form of validation, to have someone genuinely enjoy something I have enjoyed for a long time. Unlike Bunny, I started watching Star Trek with my Dad as repeats on BBC2, before becoming a die hard fan in my teens. If something is revealed ahead of time, we call that a "spoiler". The thoughtless people who're trying to show off their own knowledge and the callous blabbermouths who don't care that they ARE giving spoilers when ASKED NOT TO BY Bunny HERSELF because they simply MUST get it out, should go pick up a dictionary and read the definition of the root word "spoil". WE KNOW, because we've already seen these Eps dozens of times before. THE WHOLE POINT of watching Bunny reacting is because she's seeing them FOR THE FIRST TIME. That's what we enjoy. So, to anyone considering spoiling, anyone not thinking and just blurting spoilers out... PLEASE, for the love of Spock, DON'T comment on it until AFTER Bunny has watched it and seen for herself. You are LITERALLY ruining that specific moment and spoiling this entire experience for both Bunny and all her other viewers.

My fav character is the Andorian Ambassador Shras, played by Reggie Nalder. Austrian by birth, Nalder's exotic accent added to the facial scarring he endured in a fire, then covered by blue cinematic makeup. Nalder tilted his head slightly to deliver his lines and acted so delightfully alien. He was given the delicious line told to Spock "Perhaps you should forget logic and devote yourself to motivations of passion or gain... those are reasons for MURDER!" with a broad grin. You can also see Nalder as the assassin in Hitchcock's 1956 film "The Man Who Knew Too Much".

@joeb918
@joeb918 5 месяцев назад
All these small moments really highlight something that fans really clicked with, Spock has emotions, deep ones, and we can learn through him that Vulcans have these have emotions. However, with Spock being half human and being a disappointment to his father, he puts on a heavy more Vulcan than every other Vulcan façade that he uses as a shield. We see it slip, but he does his best to be the best Vulcan in the eyes of his father and of other humans. I can really feel that, we all have to put up appearances sometimes, but sometimes our parents can for instance force a positive emotional state on us, to not show sadness, to fake it until you make it kind of deal, even when you’re breaking on the inside… I know this all too well.

Journey to Babel was written by DC Fontana, who was Dorothy Fontana. She used "DC" and other pseudonyms because of the prejudice against women writers. Although she had already written a few television scripts at that time she began her association with Star Trek as Gene Roddenberry's secretary before becoming the show's story editor. You'll see her name on many of the more highly regarded Trek episodes and she created many of the foundational ideas, in particular about Vulcans, that were built on as the franchise continued. She went on to also become a television producer and won a Hugo award in 1988 for the pilot episode of Next Generation.

In Genesis 11, the people are united in one language until they build a city and a tower to heaven which causes God to scatter them amid different languages so they can't commit lese majesty again. Other traditions say the tower was built by the orders of Nimrod, and results in humans shooting arrows at heaven, leading to the same outcome. Maybe the motives of the Terrulites and the Orions are the same as Nimrod's? Nimrod, (always trust Nimrod) wanted someplace for him and his people to go if God caused a second flood. I think the actors have more to do with the story than the specific place they're taking the delegates. Sarek is having a tough time with his health, causing him to shut out Amanda and embarrass Spock at the greeting. I can sympathize with him, since once he's out of surgery and on meds he's telling jokes and doing the feng shui thing with Amanda. With the Remastered edition of Star Trek you can see the actor through the Terrulite's eyeholes.😅 This is one of my favorite episodes; showing Kirk Spock and McCoy at their peak. Sarek is great and Amanda's scene with Spock where she shows her love for Spock against her freak out if Spock follows logic to it's conclusion is amazing. You do the story justice. Thanks as always bunny!

FWIW, one traditional explanation of the Tower of Babel story is that *one* human, or a small group of humans, not "humanity," forced the rest to build the tower---notice that Genesis says they wished "to make a name for ourselves," not "names." This was not an inspirational effort to achieve human greatness, this was one dictator trying to make himself a god. Either way, it doesn't really play much into this episode

In the Old Testament, primordial, pre-Abrahamic humans, the fallen descendants of Adam (Hebrew: "man") and Eve (Hebrew: "living one", "source of life") all spoke one language. They thought they could get to Heaven on their own, independent of divine assistance, so they built a tower towards that end. This displeased I AM, who foiled their efforts and separated their speech into different languages. We learned much about Spock and his parents in this episode Second, the best episodes are ones like this one, in which there are several "conflicts" to solve simultaneously. Third, I thought the ending was fabulously humorous with that interaction between Spock and his father. I, too, think that Sarek is proud of Spock. Last, I so much enjoy your insights and your humorous comments! See you in the next episode! Oh, one question. Do you happen to be left handed? @bunnytailsREACTS I'm not sure if these two questions were answered so forgive me if I'm going back over the answers. 1) the Enterprise is the Federation's flagship, so having all of the delegates about wouldn't be out of the norm necessarily. 2) just like any modern Naval vessel, the Enterprise would have a limited supply of blood on board for crew members. Unless they were close to a starbase that had blood to spare or McCoy was able to request extra blood be sent, the crew would be encouraged to donate the type needed. The only problem with storing extra blood is that you can only keep it so long before it becomes unviable. Even at warp speed, you still have the time constraint. Hope that answered your questions for you. 😇

It got so expensive that Desilu would actually lose money on it since NBC paid them less than they spent on many episodes due to going over budget for costumes, sets, and effects other shows (like cheap Westerns or sitcoms) wouldn't need (Westerns had so many available sets and costumes they cost almost nothing aside from paying writers/actors/directors/extras, which is part of why there were so many Westerns on TV).

@rogershore3128 Correct, it cost $245,316 which was more than $60,000 over budget! Those were enormous sums in 1967. These episodes thag went over budget are why Star Trek resorted to so many "Earth-like planets" where they could recycle sets and props from other shows and movies or film on studio backlots to save money. When people complain about too many visits to the 1930s, ancient Rome, WW2, 1960s Earth, etc., that's pretty much the entire reason why: they had no choice.

This episode of Star Trek is regularly considered one of the best. FWIW, Mark Lenard and Leonard Nimoy crossed paths here and on Mission Impossible. Mark was first on an episode of Mission Impossible, then he did the two episodes of Star Trek that we've seen before returning to do another Mission Impossible ... where the episode is called "Trek." Then Mark did two more episodes of Mission Impossible, with the final one - "The Rebel" - during one of the two seasons that Nimoy was part of the regular cast of that show (playing the role of Paris).

@@brachiator1 Well, it's definitely hard to convince somebody to watch something without telling them things about it that make it worth watching. But once they've already decided to watch, that seems to me like time to zip it. Seeing somebody react to something unspoiled is a unique privilege. There was an episode of Doctor Who a couple years ago that had a huge surprise return of a past character, but it was revealed in all the trailers, so when the episode actually came, I could see it from miles away, and my reaction to the big reveal was just "Okay, I knew that already." But a couple months later I watched it with someone else, who hadn't seen the trailers, and didn't hang out in fan communities. When that reveal happened, she just about fell out of her chair. She was completely blown away by the plot twist. As a result, when I rewatch it now, I remember that moment as having been shocking, even though I never experienced it as being shocking.

I used to record these programs holding a microphone to the TV speaker, while recording on a reel-to-reel. At those times the only way one could enjoy the show again until summer repeats. 5:31, there is a Star Trek novel that discussed the history of Vulcan and was published in the late 1980/early 1990 . As part of the Vulcan history it tells the story of how Spock's parents met. I can't remember the title but I do remember the segment on Spock's folks. Sarek and Amanda met on a project for developing the universal translator and immediately clicked on an intellectual level. They began working closely together which led to dining together at work. The repeated lunch sessions led to late night work sessions at one or the other's home. Late one night at Sarek's place, they were arguing over the proper translation of a Vulcan phrase. Amanda kept translating the phrase as "having no emotions". Sarek explained that the phrase really meant "suppressing all emotion". Finally Amanda asked why it was a big deal to which Sarek replied "You will have people thinking Vulcans have no emotions". At this point, Amanda teased Sarek by asking "Oh so you have emotions?" Sarek looked at Amanda solemnly leaned close to kiss her and said "You will have to be the judge" Later after a night of passionate (though logical) sex, they started making plans for marriage and discussing the possibility of children.

Bunny half-jokingly suggests the purple alien (a Violacean) to be the villain of the hour, but no! It turns out the bad guy is a green alien (an Orion) posing as a blue alien (an Andorian). And all the while, the gold aliens (the Ithenites) are just chilling out and enjoying the refreshments! The Federation truly is a wondrous place with colorful characters.

One thing you'll see is that there are Vulcans and there are Vulcans... some are at the extreme aloof end, like Sarek, and others are more laid back. And some are just outright pricks who use their supposed "logic" as an excuse for sheer smugness. Spock has Sarek as his role model so he always tried to be "more Vulcan than Thou" to match his father, but as he got older he became much more relaxed and realized that "Logic is the _beginning_ of wisdom, not the end."

Beautiful episode reaction, certainly one of my personal favourites, I’d like to think that Vulcans have a sense of humour the way Spock and Sarek were teasing Amanda at the end. Spock has a sly, wicked sense of humour: BAILEY: Raising my voice back there doesn't mean I was scared or couldn't do my job. It means I happen to have a human thing called an adrenaline gland. Voice typing, I presume? You might want to edit your post for proper grammar and spelling. EDIT: And I see you fixed the voice-typing issues. 👍 The stuff you said, if I'm interpreting you correctly, about Sarek's father is entirely speculative. There is no official, or even semi-official, source for that. When I find mentioning something non-canonical like that to be worth mentioning, I will describe it as "fan theory" or the like. Fun to think about, and relevant info as some... perhaps even most?... fans believe it. But unless the creators of the show explicitly stated so... and to me, earlier series always take precedence over later ones, without exception, so in case of conflicts, I choose the earlier version first... fan theories should never be treated as "official." It's all pure speculation. For example, I have my own version of Kirk's early career, based upon the limited info given on screen and my knowledge of how the military actually operates. I even, personally, hold that Kirk was first officer on the U.S.S. Alexander, a Baton Rouge Class Cruiser, with the rank of Commander, and after the death of the captain, briefly commanded the Alexander just prior to his promotion to the rank of Captain and posting to the position if Captain of the Enterprise. I hold that it was his actions on the Alexander which earned him the prestigious posting, the youngest ever promoted to that position. Some of what I just mentioned is canon. Some is long-accepted "fan canon" but is unofficial. And some is my own invention. But it all makes sense, both in alignment with Trek canon and with how real military organizations function. It's what I believe... my own personal "head canon." But no one else has to agree.

27:00 - fun theory Bunny, however because Kirk is human with hundreds of other humans on board, there would have been far many more and better matching donors for Kirk's needs than Spock's vulcan tinged blood. People will recognize 'Babel' from either pronunciation, so neither is "incorrect" per se. I prefer "babble", of which that word itself derives from the same story of the Tower of Babel. The etymology of all these traces back to Babylonian civilization, which spoke the Old Babylonian (or OB) dialect/version of the Akkadian language, and the capital city, Babylon. The name is actually "Bab-ilu": 'baab' meaning door and '-ilu' meaning gods (plural). The tower in question was probably the Etemenanki (Sumerian for "temple to the foundation of heaven and earth"), which was a temple *to* the god Marduk, the chief deity of the city of Babylon. Babylonian civilization was already rather multilingual and diverse, since it had existed contemporaneously with several other civilizations in the area, such as Sumerian civilization, from where they got cuneiform writing, and because Babylon frequently won mosta the wars of conquest between them and their neighbors and brought back a lot of the defeated people, particularly nobles, as slaves, particularly the Judeans (who obviously didn't appreciate the slavery part), during the Neo-Babylonian period.

Now that you've seen this episode, I can make a comment on Balance of Terror and The Corbomite Maneuver without making a spoiler, as you've seen and reviewed both of those as well in this series. If Spock is going to comment on dummy Balok that he "resembles his father", then why on Earth wouldn't he have made a similar comment in a later episode... where the resemblance is stronger? Of course, the real-world answer is that the casting of this episode wasn't known yet, but I suppose crewman Stiles, the one suspicious of Spock, could be used as an excuse. And if dummy Balok revealed what full Vulcans are supposed to look like... well, then, Sarek getting makeup like Spock's is a continuity error.

I presume they just had to filter out a very small portion of human elements from Spock's blood, and the Enterprise would have had plenty of human blood, unlike Vulcan blood, in its stores. As for Babel - well, races from across the Galaxy would have different original languages, which would be a simple reason for giving that name to a site dedicated to diplomatic meetings.

My own two cents worth on spoilers: I've given spoilers myself, without intending any harm. Even in this comment section, I gave a spoiler, then I realized what I had done, so I removed the spoiler two minutes later. I don't like spoilers myself, so I will be very careful (as indicated above) to avoid giving them. I totally respect bunnytails' request. But let's also avoid the idea that spoilers are given by mean people for nasty reasons. As others have pointed out, TOS has been around for almost 60 years, and much of the TOS lore has entered mainstream culture. We promise to do our best to screen out spoilers, bunnytails, but, if some spoilers do slip through, it isn't due to malice: it's just bad luck more than anything else. Best wishes, live long and prosper, ... and no spoilers, Dandelion Down
@carybrown851
@carybrown851 5 месяцев назад
The vast majority of "spoilers" are given by people who simply aren't thinking... or rather, they're thinking about things solely from their own perspective, and not from anyone else's. This is essentially a lack of capacity for empathy. People who are highly empathetic inherently are drawn towards "seeing the other person's side of view," while being less empathetic makes people have more difficulty seeing things that way. People entirely without empathy... or, stated clinically, people with antisocial personality disorders (narcissism, psychopathy, sociopathy)... are entirely incapable of seeing things from other people's point of view, and would not want to if they were. The people who make "honest mistakes" are easy to spot, because they accept "corrections" gracefully. The very few who become aggressive about defending their actions, on the other hand... who cannot take criticism or correction without perceiving it as an "attack" of some sort... are the ones I personally have issues with. They know that they've been asked not to do so, but simply don't care. Fortunately, there are only a few people here who've shown that tendency... but they do stand out. Failing to, initially, understand why they shouldn't do something is entirely non-problematic. Empathy is a spectrum, after all, not a binary state. (No one is 100% empathetic, or 0% empathetic. But sociopaths, in particular, are very, very close to 0%.) It's when someone points out what they've done, and they defend what they've done, despite it clearly being a direct violation of what they've been asked.... that's when it becomes an issue. Dozens of folks here "spoiled" Sarek. And dozens have spoiled something that happens in the Animated Series, as well. Plus many other spoilers as well. Few were in any way malicious, but a few, I'm convinced, actually are. This is usually due to the person just being excited... and allowing their excitement to cloud their judgment (and thus their empathy). They have it, they just "forget about it" briefly, in their excitement. Only the most empathetic people are not potentially able to do this when their own emotions are stirred up. So, we can't fix what's already happened. But we can strive to avoid it happening, going forward. BunnyTails has a plan in place to help avoid this, though it's not yet fully realized. And however she eventually handles things, I hope we'll ALL be willing to help her in achieving this... both by curtailing our own "spoiling" actions, AND by (gently, at first, and more forcefully only if the gentle approach fails) chastizing those who willfully ignore her desire to not have things spoiled.

@@carybrown851 I support bunnytails' request for no spoilers, and I support your comment, carybrown. In an effort to be helpful, I will point out one more thing. I believe bunnytails' channel is growing fast. She will have, at any time, many new subscribers who are simply UNAWARE of her request for no spoilers. In fact, I have noticed that some of the spoilers have come from commenters who say, "Hi, new subscriber here. You liked that actor, so be sure to watch him again in the upcoming episode ..." To summarize, new subscribers (and new commenters) might simply not know about the no-spoilers policy. Therefore, she might need somebody to screen the comments for her, as others have suggested. Best wishes, Dandelion Down
@carybrown851
@carybrown851 5 месяцев назад
@@MarkRyan-u3u Yes, absolutely. Someone familiar with Trek, and able to "screen," is vital. Who that will end up being is entirely in her hands, though no doubt several of us would be willing to help her out in that manner. I certainly would be, but it might make sense to give that "filtering power" to more than one individual. How it would work is a bit of a mystery to me at the moment, however. Would the "filter moderator" just have the ability to delete posts? Or is it possible for them to alter posts, making them HIDDEN so that you'd have to click on the "unhide" button in order to view them? I think that latter option would be best... but I'm unsure if that's even possible within the RU-vid architecture. I suspect that BunnyTails is looking into just how this would work right now, but I cannot say with any certainty. In the end, I think that the goal would be for a few... three or four, at most... "trusted helpers" to have the ability to tag spoiler posts as just that, making it impossible to accidentally be exposed to those posts. I susoect that, if that tact is possible, it royld have yo hide the entire thread, or subthread...not the posts higher than it in the hierarchy, but it and anything below it in the hierarchy. If I were designing the software from scratch, that's what I'd do. But I honestly have no idea if RU-vid's system is capable of that. In which case, deletion might well be the only viable alternative. Of course, I'm not all-knowing, so there could be some other alternative I haven't thought of. If so, I'd love to hear suggestions... and I believe our hostess would as well!

Mark Leonard (who holds the unique honor of being the first Romulan and the first fore-head ridged Klingon seen on screen, and one of the few actors to play multiple major races) is amazing as Sarek, and apparently he spent a week shadowing Leonard Nimoy to get the Vulcan mannerisms down.
