The Mount Evans Scenic Byway is the highest paved road in North America located in Colorado. In June, this iconic byway offers a stunning journey through picturesque landscapes and offers visitors a unique and memorable experience.
As summer begins to unfold, June brings vibrant colors and abundant wildlife to the Mount Evans area. The scenic byway takes you on a winding route that starts in the charming town of Idaho Springs and ascends to the summit of Mount Evans, one of Colorado's majestic Fourteeners (mountains exceeding 14,000 feet or 4,267 meters in elevation).
During this time of year, the snow that once adorned the mountaintops begins to recede, revealing towering granite peaks, lush alpine meadows, and pristine lakes. As you drive along the byway, you'll be treated to breathtaking vistas at every turn, with panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains stretching as far as the eye can see.
In June, the lower elevations along the byway come alive with colorful wildflowers, creating a vibrant tapestry of blues, yellows, purples, and reds. The aroma of fresh mountain air and the gentle rustling of leaves add to the enchanting atmosphere. Keep an eye out for wildlife as well, as this area is home to a variety of animals including bighorn sheep, mountain goats, marmots, and even the occasional elk or black bear.
As you continue your ascent, the temperature drops and the landscape transforms into a rugged alpine tundra. The snow-capped peaks create a dramatic backdrop, contrasting with the delicate wildflowers and the hardy plants that thrive in this challenging environment. June offers a unique blend of winter's remnants and summer's emergence, providing a remarkable juxtaposition of seasons.
Reaching the summit of Mount Evans is a true highlight of the journey. At 14,264 feet (4,349 meters), it offers an awe-inspiring panoramic view that extends over the vast Colorado plains and distant mountain ranges. On a clear day, you can see for miles, experiencing a sense of serenity and grandeur that is difficult to replicate.
Please note that weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains, and snow may still be present on the higher sections of the byway in June. It is important to check road conditions and be prepared for various weather scenarios before embarking on this scenic adventure.

I just drove up Pikes Peak a few weeks ago. Seemed like there was a lot more tight switchbacks and steeper dropoffs without guard rails in some spots.
