Hi Alan, thanks so much for the kind note - glad you enjoyed it! Sounds like you’ve got a great trip lined up. It was amazing to do the climb with family; a joy I’m sure you will experience too. Have a blast!
Hi Ross, Well done! Your story brought back a flood of memories. We did this exact climb 33 years ago. My son Aaron Lamb was 16 at the time and this was his introduction to Africa. We did the climb in April, lots of rain, snow and fog. The assault the peak in the middle of the night was clear, above the clouds and as you said, the sunrise was worth it. Thank you so much. I appreciated the great editing and every agonizing step the last thousand metres of the assent.
Hi Dave, thanks for watching and thank you for the kind words! Sounds like an incredible journey you went on - especially with the rain and snow. No ascent up 5800m is easy, but the rain and snow add a whole new level of difficulty. What a great (and memorable) way for Aaron to see such a spectacular continent. Have either of you been back since? I didn’t want to leave Africa when the time came to fly home!
@@RossRheaume Hi Ross, I think we met a while back. I’m Eric’s uncle currently living in Winnipeg. I enjoyed your Mississippi River video as well. Yes, I have been back to Africa often and recommend travel there. Spent a month in South Africa in 2017 and loved it. Also, highly recommend Egypt. Looking forward to your next adventure video. D
@@DaveLamb-vz4pf I think we did - I recognized the name as soon as I saw it, which also cued the sounds of hand-built planes in my head! Went to Egypt in 2018 and loved it. South Africa would be wonderful to get to in the future - the photos would be incredible. All the best, and Happy New Year!
Thank you, amazing. This is by far the best Kili video. Yes I did tear up. Am unwell currently yet set to do Kili in 5 weeks. You have given me such a boast. Thank you asante sana🎉
Wow, thanks so much! I really appreciate that, very kind of you to say! Have heard a lot of really great things about the Rongai route - it’s probably the only other route I’d do if I was climbing Kilimanjaro again. Best of luck, and have a blast!
My eyes wetted up and I am just watching the beautiful sun rise ! Wow . How I wish I was young and fit enough to see that for myself . Thank you for filming your adventure and describing your emotions . Many years ago I would be in South Wales ,UK , Brecon Beacons every other weekend in my school days and some routes were challenging and you have to push through mental and physical barriers , but Kilimanjaro , which I have actually seen from Nairobi , is absolutely something else . I bet you would do it again too ! Well done
Hi David, what a lovely message. Glad you enjoyed the journey! The sunrise was so spectacular, especially after pouring so much of ourselves into the summit. Thanks for watching and sharing your story - Brecon Beacons looks like a beautiful place to traverse! 👍
This is just amazing, beautiful filmmaking. The photographs you took along the way are breathtaking. The emotions in this video felt so genuine, particularly as you were summiting - what an amazing experience to share with your family. Your group are f*cking awesome! I am climbing Kilimanjaro with one of my best friends of nearly 30 years and this video has made me more excited than ever. Please never stop creating and storytelling! This documentary is something special.
Robert, thank you for the incredibly kind comment! I really appreciate it! It was such a tremendous experience, and I’m glad the story resonated (and got you fired up! 💪) Amazing that you’re going to do the climb, especially with a great friend - surely will make the adventure all the more memorable! All the best on your journey to the top (let me know how it goes), and thanks for watching!
this is Incredibly wonderful! me and my boyfriend are from Brazil and we dream about the day we will climb Kilimanjaro! thank you for such a real and thrilling documentary! absolutely inspiring!
Hi Ross, I am thankful to have your video come up in my feed, our group of 6 friends plan to go there in June and I have been busy bing watching Kili videos, but your video truly stands out. You have captured and edited the experience Amazingnly. I felt I was with you in your journey, especially the summit night, where you'll have described your thoughts. The pictures you have taken are breathtaking. It is super exciting and I am sure when it's sumit night your words would be wandering in my mind. Great Job!!! Can't thank you enough for putting such amazing content together.
Hi Satish, thank you for the very kind message! Glad you enjoyed the story! It’s great that you’ll get to experience the climb in June, especially with friends. Being on the top at the summit felt like we were in another world, and is one of the unforgettable moments of my life. Absolutely magical. Thanks for watching, and safe climb! One foot in front of the other! 💪
Sounds like a great reason to do the climb 😊👍 What part of Newfoundland? A couple friends and I hiked through Gros Morne last summer and loved it there!
@@RossRheaume I’m from Bonavista Bay, about 3 hours drive from St. John’s. I climbed Gros Morne a number of years back, it really is a beautiful climb and the view at the top is amazing.
Fantastic video Ross. One of the best on the net. I climbed Kili via the Rongai route several years back. I descended on the Marangu route. Your videos brought back many great memories. As you described in the story, one cannot capture just how emotional reaching the top is, how great the guides and porters are, and how one forms an incredible bond with those that have done it with you. Well done and cherish the memories in the years to come, from a fellow Canuck from down the road in London.
Hi Philip, thanks for the kind words! Nice to hear from a fellow summiter/Ontarian! I’ve heard a lot of great things about the Rongai route, including the views of Mawenzi. This video obviously didn’t touch on the descent down the Marangu Route, but I will say the first time I felt “like a human being” after summiting was back at Horombo - the sleep that night was fantastic (and much needed). All the best, and stay adventurous!
Not gonna lie!!!! I came on here for some ideas for my Kilimanjaro blog as I completed it last month!! I literally just relived my whole trip!! Great vidio!! Love it!! Well done for completing this monster mountain!!
Great work on this piece! I can only imagine how wonderful it felt to go bak through the footage in post after you had gotten back off the mountain. Mt. Kilimanjaro is now on my bucket list!
Thanks so much, Michael! It was a ton of fun to edit and relive the moments again - including finding footage of the bush dog on the trail (that I didn’t know we had)! Highly recommend the climb to anyone who’s willing and able!
Thanks so much, Allan! I had 3 cameras: an iPhone, GoPro, and a 5y/o Canon DSLR (that I could beat up and get dirty lol). I uploaded a behind-the-scenes video here on RU-vid going over gear! 👍
Amazing video and journey! Going in February and staying at Marangu Hotel. Any tips or tricks for the climb or things we should do at or around the hotel??
Thanks for watching! Have a blast in February, and enjoy the hotel! One big tip for the climb is to count your steps on summit night - when your body starts shutting down and you can’t think straight, go back to basics and focus on just putting one foot in front of the other (really helps!) As for things to do around the hotel, we had a great guided tour from a local resident to a nearby waterfall - it was lovely!
My husband and our friend are just starting to plan this climb. Your video was AMAZING! What group did you go with? Didn’t see your friend’s info posted. Thanks again.
Beautifully done! The pictures are wonderful and we loved watching your video. Would you mind sharing which outfitter you went with. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Hi Jodi, thanks so much for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed 😊 We went with Marangu Hotel, and had an incredible experience: www.maranguhotel.com Let me know if you have any more questions or need more info!
Thanks Shweta! No one from our 4-person group has done both (yet!). I’ve heard the difficulty is comparable (in terms of altitude), but the trekking distance to Everest Base Camp is much more substantial (~130km vs. ~75km on Marangu Route up Kilimanjaro). Hope that helps!
@@RossRheaume hey thanks… it does. I just did Base camp last November and I’ve been toying with the idea of attempting Kili. Your video is wonderful, I’m inspired:)
@@24shwetaa Oh wow, amazing! Congratulations! If you’ve done Base Camp you should definitely do Kili (biased opinion! Lol). It’s funny you say that, because Everest is now starting to be more of a consideration on our end - it’s as if we are living parallel journeys/ideas 😂
Thank you for the video. You guys are really lucky to have this wonderful experience together. You inspired me to do this adventure one day and sure I will !. And if you don't mind I would like to share this video on one of my facebook group as a documentary about mount kilimanjaro.
Hi Hudson, thanks for the kind words! A handful of the photos are up on Instagram (@bestofbist and @maranguhotel). I’m actually posting another video on RU-vid today that has even more stills that weren’t in this video 👍
